The Impact of Service-Learning Experiences On Baccalaureate Nursing Alumni

    Get PDF
The purpose of this research study was to explore the long-term impact of international service-learning (ISL) experiences taken by nursing students in Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) programs and how their current nursing practice might be affected by these experiences. A sequential explanatory mixed methods case study design was used to survey and interview BSN alumni about their cross-cultural experiences. The quantitative survey data used the Cultural Capacity Scale (Perng & Watson, 2012) to compare scores of 93 BSN alumni who did and did not have an ISL experience during nursing school. Then the qualitative portion utilized semi-structured interviews with alumni who had taken ISL trips during nursing school. Nurses who went on an ISL trip in school had higher total Cultural Capacity Scale scores than nursing alumni who did not have those experiences. Themes in the interview narratives included remembering personal benefits from their experiences, developing a broader worldview, experiencing profound gratitude, and feeling overwhelmed by needs. These findings were integrated to describe the long-term impacts of ISL experiences both personally and professionally in current nursing practice

Early Interventions: An Economic Approach to Charitable Giving

    Get PDF
This report highlights the estimated £100bn combined cost impact of some of the most difficult social issues and looks at how private funders can help tackle the root causes of these issues, and in turn deliver significant savings to state and help individual lives. It identifies that early intervention is key to tackling serious social issues which can later become entrenched, therefore bringing significant cost savings to state finances

EMPIRICAL EVALUATION OF CLINICAL SUPERVISION MODEL OF SUPERVISING PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS

    Get PDF
There are few empirical evidences of the effectiveness of the various teaching practice supervision models. This study is aimed to add to the dearth of empirical evidences of effectiveness of teaching practice supervision model by evaluating the clinical supervision model. Clinical supervision is a method of supervision whereby the supervisor is involved with the pre-service-teacher in a close, ‘helping, relationship’. Essentially, clinical supervision in education involves a teacher trainee receiving information from a supervisor who has observed the teacher trainee’s performance and who serves as both a mirror and a sounding board to enable the teacher trainee critically examine and possibly alter his/her own professional practice. Within the context of such supervision, ideas are shared and help is given in order to improve the teacher trainee’s ability through the analysis of objective data that is collected during the observation.  Article visualizations

    Smile, Dictator, You’re on Camera

We investigate the degree to which people in a shopping mall express other-regarding behavior in the dictator game. Whereas many studies have attempted to increase the social distance between the dictator and experimenter and between the dictator and dictatee, we attempt to minimize that social distance between random strangers by video recording the decisions with the permission of the dictators to display their image on the Internet. Offers made by dictators are high relative to other experiments and a nontrivial number give the entire experimental windfall away, however a nontrivial number of people keep everything as well

Historical overview of development in methods to estimate burden of disease due to congenital disorders.

    Get PDF
Congenital disorders (often also called birth defects) are an important cause of mortality and disability. They encompass a wide range of disorders with differing severity that can affect any aspect of structure or function. Understanding their epidemiology is important in developing appropriate services both for their prevention and treatment. The need for epidemiological data on congenital disorders has been recognised for many decades. Here, we provide a historical overview of work that has led to the development of the Modell Global Database of Congenital Disorders (MGDb)-a tool that can be used to generate evidence-based country, regional and global estimates of the birth prevalence and outcomes of congenital disorders
