    A New Low-Mass Eclipsing Binary from SDSS-II

    We present observations of a new low-mass double-lined eclipsing binary system discovered using repeat observations of the celestial equator from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey II. Using near-infrared photometry and optical spectroscopy we have measured the properties of this short-period [P=0.407037(14) d] system and its two components. We find the following parameters for the two components: M_1=0.272+/-0.020 M_sun, R_1=0.268+/-0.010 R_sun, M_2=0.240+/-0.022 M_sun, R_2=0.248+/-0.0090 R_sun, T_1=3320+/-130 K, T_2=3300+/-130 K. The masses and radii of the two components of this system agree well with theoretical expectations based on models of low-mass stars, within the admittedly large errors. Future synoptic surveys like Pan-STARRS and LSST will produce a wealth of information about low-mass eclipsing systems and should make it possible, with an increased reliance on follow-up observations, to detect many systems with low-mass and sub-stellar companions. With the large numbers of objects for which these surveys will produce high-quality photometry, we suggest that it becomes possible to identify such systems even with sparse time sampling and a relatively small number of individual observations.Comment: 15 Pages, 9 Figures, 6 Tables.     The phenomenology of post-stroke depression.

    Aims: This portfolio reviews the concept of Post-Stroke Depression (PSD) by exploring differences in the symptoms of depression between stroke survivors and members of the general population. The portfolio focuses on concerns that other stroke symptoms, such as fatigue, might be misinterpreted as depression, or vice versa. Structure: This portfolio includes a systematic review of existing studies that investigated symptom differences between PSD and general population depression. An empirical paper follows, which examined a commonly used depression questionnaire, the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and how it might unintentionally measure stroke symptoms other than depression. This involved Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), a statistical method. The portfolio finishes by reflecting on this research. Results: The systematic review found many similarities in the symptoms of depression between stroke and the general population. It found that loss of interest or pleasure in activity was less common in PSD. It found that problems with changeable emotions and disruption to working were more common in PSD. The empirical paper found that the PHQ-9 measures depression in stroke without problematic effects of other stroke symptoms, but that post-stroke fatigue might raise people’s scores on the question relating to tiredness. Researchers should therefore not compare PHQ-9 scores between stroke and non-stroke groups without accounting for this. Conclusions: We found evidence for similarities and differences in experiences of depression between stroke and non-stroke. Depression measurement was robust to other physical consequences of stroke in both papers, but questionnaire items concerning tiredness and fatigue may be more prone to measuring these problems as well as depression. PSD may therefore be treated similarly to depression in other populations, but with consideration of a person’s experiences of loss, changes to personal roles and work, their mood and well-being, and changes to how quickly their emotions change

    Effect of Hydrogen Pick-up and Release Behavior on the Tensile Properties of Electroplated 4340M High-strength Steel

    Hydrogen embrittlement of high-strength steel (4340M) was quantified through tensile testing and fractography (SEM). Three types of samples were obtained: rotating beam fatigue specimens, round (notched) tensile specimens, and flat panel specimens. In addition, three different plating types were analyzed (Ni, Cr, Cd-Ti) with a set of samples that was shot peened and a set that was not. Since some of the samples went through a hydrogen relief bake, another factor in our experiment was the amount of time it took for the samples to reach the baking process after they were electroplated (bake delay). There were three levels of bake delay that were studied for each type of plating: specified bake, delayed bake, and no bake. The notched tensile specimens and the rotating beam specimens were tensile tested, and their fracture surfaces were imaged and analyzed. The flat panel specimens were notched and manually fractured in a vise, and fractography was performed to characterize failure modes. To determine the amount of hydrogen input and release from the various samples, LECO combustion analysis was performed. The hydrogen content was used to correlate the various processing conditions (electroplating type, shot peening, bake delay) to their tensile properties and failure modes

    The reliability, validity and clinical utility of the Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation – ten-item version (CORE-10) in post-acute patients with stroke

    Objective: To explore the validity, reliability, and clinical utility of the Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation – ten-item version (CORE-10: a ten-item questionnaire designed to measure psychological distress) in a stroke inpatient sample and calculate reliable and clinically significant change scores. Setting: A post-acute stroke rehabilitation ward in the East of England. Participants: A total of 53 patients with stroke, capable of completing the CORE-10 as part of their routine clinical assessment. Exclusion criteria included moderate to severe aphasia and/or alexia. Main measures: Alongside the CORE-10, the Patient Health Questionnaire – 9, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the Centre for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale, and the Beck Depression Inventory Second Edition were used as concurrent measures. Results: To assess reliability, the internal consistency and test–retest reliability of the CORE-10 were calculated. The average number of days between CORE-10 test–retest administrations was 2.84 (SD = 3.12, Mdn = 1). Concurrent validity was assessed by examining correlations between the CORE-10 and comparable measures, and clinical utility was assessed using the criteria of Burton and Tyson (2015). The internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha) for the CORE-10 was .80, and test–retest reliability interclass correlation coefficient was .81. Total score correlations between the CORE-10 and concurrent measures ranged from r = .49 to r = .89. The CORE-10 achieved the maximum score (i.e. 6/6) on criteria for clinical utility. Calculations demonstrated a reliable change index of nine points and a clinically significant change cut point of 12 on the CORE-10. Percentiles for CORE-10 total scores are reported. Conclusions: This study provides preliminary support for the CORE-10 as a valid and reliable measure that has clinical utility for screening distress in inpatients with stroke

    The purpose of this design project is to create a durable lightweight yard game for players of all skill levels. Carbon Cornhole is a composite improvement on the already popular yard game, cornhole, with a new twist. The final product is based on valued feedback from customers. The board is manufactured of carbon fiber/epoxy sandwich panels with a closed cell foam core. The composite design provides a lightweight product. The panels are specifically manufactured to retain their mechanical properties when exposed to outdoor elements such as water and UV radiation. The addition of inlayed LED lights and two new skill holes allows for a new playing experience and the ability to play at night. The addition of 3D printed feet allows for the board to be played on multiple different outdoor surfaces such as grass, gravel, or concrete. Testing on the finished product will ensure the customer experiences years of enjoyment from their purchase

    Thermoelectric properties of co-doped (Bi0.98In0.02)2Te2.7Se0.3 / reduced graphene oxide composites prepared by solid-state reaction

    The thermoelectric properties of co-doped (Bi0.98In0.02)2Te2.7Se0.3/reduced graphene oxide composites between 10 - 325 K are presented. X-ray diffraction confirms that the composites adopt a rhombohedral structure with space group R3ÂŻm. Field emission scanning electron microscopy reveals an interface structure of reduced graphene oxide (rGO). N-type conducting behaviour is observed for all the samples, as ascertained by Hall effect and Seebeck coefficient measurements, with a carrier concentration of 1025/m3. The thermal conductivity and electrical resistivity of (Bi0.98In0.02)2Te2.7Se0.3/0.02 wt% reduced graphene oxide composite is found to decrease by 1.6 and 10 times respectively in comparison with that of (Bi0.98In0.02)2Te2.7Se0.3. The power factor is enhanced by 7 times for (Bi0.98In0.02)2Te2.7Se0.3/0.01 wt% rGO compared to that of (Bi0.98In0.02)2Te2.7Se0.3
