    Gravity in a Box

We consider a brane-world construction which incorporates a finite region of flat space, ``the box,'' surrounded by a region of anti-de Sitter space. This hybrid construction provides a framework which interpolates between the scenario proposed by Arkani-Hamed, Dimopoulos and Dvali, and that proposed by Randall and Sundrum. Within this composite framework, we investigate the effects of resonant modes on four-dimensional gravity. We also show that, on a probe brane in the anti-de Sitter region, there is enhanced production of on-shell nonresonant modes. We compare our model to some recent attempts to incorporate the Randall-Sundrum scenario into superstring theory.Comment: 15 pages, 1 figur

Apple v. Microsoft: Virtual Identity in the GUI Wars

The company that controls the interface of the next major operating system will have the ability to set the standards for application software. It was not surprising that Apple Corporation began its fight to stop Windows from being that major operating system after Microsoft Corporation introduced the various versions of its Windows software and announced plans for this program to replace the already widely selling DOS operating system. Unfortunately, Apple chose to conduct this war on the complex and often confusing battleground of copyright law, which ultimately proved to be its downfall

    AFAP-110 is a cSrc activator

The cSrc oncogene directs the reorganization of the actin cytoskeleton in both normal and transformed cells. Mutation of protein binding domains (SH2 and SH3) from cSrc results in the deregulation of the kinase and the transformation of cells, while deletion of these domains blocks transformation by active forms of Src. This indicates that SH2/SH3 binding partners for cSrc may play a crucial role in the regulation of this kinase as well as the fulfillment of cSrc-directed functions. One SH2/SH3 binding partner for cSrc being investigated for its role in cSrc transformation is the a&barbelow;ctin f&barbelow;ilament-a&barbelow;ssociated p&barbelow;rotein, AFAP-110. AFAP-110 represents a potential regulator of the actin cytoskeleton, as it associated with actin structures and contains an intrinsic potential to direct the reorganization of the cytoskeleton in a manner which resembles Src transformation. In this work we addressed this potential for AFAP-110 to induce actin reorganization. Immunoblot and immunofluorescence analyses were used to investigate this potential. The results indicate that AFAP-110 binds actin directly and can induce cytoskeletal reorganizations in multiple cells types. Additionally, AFAP-110 can activate cSrc in an SH3 domain-dependent mechanism. This ability is revealed upon phosphorylation by PKC, which induces a conformational change in AFAP-110. Both SH3 interactions with cSrc and PH domain interactions with PKC are required for this result, as abrogation of either interaction blocks both the activation of cSrc and the reorganization by PKC. These results allow us to conclude that AFAP-110 can activate cSrc in response to cellular signals

The Effectiveness of Code-Switching in Evangelism: The Use of African American Vernacular English by Standard English Speakers

    Get PDF
Abstract This paper evaluates the use of code-switching as a linguistic and pragmatic tool to build interpersonal relationships between members of the African American minority group and the Standard English “white majority” for the purpose to evangelize the Christian faith. Using the Shannon-Weaver (Shannon & Weaver, 1999) communication model as a foundation, the research suggests that changing the message is the best way to overcome barriers in interpersonal communication (namely evangelistic communication). The research varies in use of code-switching as a pragmatic tool for this message change. Ariffin (2009), Jørgensen (1998), and Madsen (2004) give positive evidence for code-switching, while Anderson (2007) contrastingly argues that lexical borrowing is more favorable, and Wilder (1984) argues that cultural typicalness is most favorable. This research analyzes code-switching in an inner city teen center by reviewing questionnaires from the out-group volunteers and interviewing a volunteer with dual in-group membership. The original hypothesis states that the use of code-switching has a neutral to positive effect on building credible relationships between the majority out-group and minority in-group and thereby would be an effective evangelistic tool. However, the questionnaires and the interview reveal a neutral to negative effect of code-switching which supports the arguments of Wilder (1984) and Anderson (2007). Keywords: code-switching, evangelism, African American Vernacular English (AAVE), Shannon-Weave
