    The foundation for a K-11 social studies curriculum guide for Newfoundland and Labrador

    The purpose of the study was to provide a foundation for the production of a curriculum guide for social studies for Newfoundland and Labrador. The two main tasks were the analysis of the curriculum programs and the provision of recommendations for a provincial social studies program. -- Social studies curriculum guides from eight Canadian provinces and nine American states, and selected material from Britain were reviewed and analyzed. The procedure involved identifying the rationales of the programs, outlining the objectives of each program describing the content development approach used, identifying the methods of instruction, outlining the learning processes of the program, and evaluatively appraising the programs. This appraisal was intended to identify key trends and themes evident in the analysis results. -- The recommendations that were developed were intended to provide a program with its rationale based upon the ways man interacts with his physical and cultural environments, objectives stressing knowledge acquisition and the development of mental and data processing skills, content based on concepts and generalizations drawn from, the social sciences and developed within an expanding environment format, and a descriptive inquiry process approach for student learning

    Variance component estimates, phenotypic characterization, and genetic evaluation of bovine congestive heart failure in commercial feeder cattle

    The increasing incidence of bovine congestive heart failure (BCHF) in feedlot cattle poses a significant challenge to the beef industry from economic loss, reduced performance, and reduced animal welfare attributed to cardiac insufficiency. Changes to cardiac morphology as well as abnormal pulmonary arterial pressure (PAP) in cattle of mostly Angus ancestry have been recently characterized. However, congestive heart failure affecting cattle late in the feeding period has been an increasing problem and tools are needed for the industry to address the rate of mortality in the feedlot for multiple breeds. At harvest, a population of 32,763 commercial fed cattle were phenotyped for cardiac morphology with associated production data collected from feedlot processing to harvest at a single feedlot and packing plant in the Pacific Northwest. A sub-population of 5,001 individuals were selected for low-pass genotyping to estimate variance components and genetic correlations between heart score and the production traits observed during the feeding period. At harvest, the incidence of a heart score of 4 or 5 in this population was approximately 4.14%, indicating a significant proportion of feeder cattle are at risk of cardiac mortality before harvest. Heart scores were also significantly and positively correlated with the percentage Angus ancestry observed by genomic breed percentage analysis. The heritability of heart score measured as a binary (scores 1 and 2 = 0, scores 4 and 5 = 1) trait was 0.356 in this population, which indicates development of a selection tool to reduce the risk of congestive heart failure as an EPD (expected progeny difference) is feasible. Genetic correlations of heart score with growth traits and feed intake were moderate and positive (0.289–0.460). Genetic correlations between heart score and backfat and marbling score were −0.120 and −0.108, respectively. Significant genetic correlation to traits of high economic importance in existing selection indexes explain the increased rate of congestive heart failure observed over time. These results indicate potential to implement heart score observed at harvest as a phenotype under selection in genetic evaluation in order to reduce feedlot mortality due to cardiac insufficiency and improve overall cardiopulmonary health in feeder cattle

    The limits of relational governance: Sales force strategies in the U.S. medical device industry

    Research Summary: We explore how inter-organizational relationships shape firm boundary decisions. Using data on 545 U.S. medical device manufacturers’ product portfolios and sales governance choices (i.e., internal or external sales forces) from 1983 to 1996, we find relational capital between manufacturers and external sales forces influences future firm boundary decisions. Relational capital lowers the likelihood of integrating the sales function, but only when firms remain focused on the same product market. Further, launching an innovative product has a nuanced effect. For firms lacking relational capital, innovation increases the likelihood of sales integration. This pattern reverses as relational capital accumulates, but only when innovations are in the firm’s existing focal product market. Our findings suggest important limits on the effect of relational governance on firm strategy. Managerial Abstract: Choosing between in-house or external sales is a key strategic decision. In the medical device industry, this decision is particularly important because sales people are conduits between R&D and customers. For firms who initially choose external sales, the tradeoff between maintaining existing links (via external sales) and developing new, direct relationships (by bringing sales in-house) can change significantly as product portfolios change. Analyzing 545 U.S. medical device manufacturers from 1983 to 1996, we find that existing relationships with external sales forces reduce the likelihood of bringing sales in-house, but only when firms remain in the same product market, such as orthopedic implants. When firms launch products in new markets, especially innovations, they are more likely to bring sales in-house

    Clinical Manifestations and Case Management of Ebola Haemorrhagic Fever caused by a newly identified virus strain, Bundibugyo, Uganda, 2007-2008

    A confirmed Ebola haemorrhagic fever (EHF) outbreak in Bundibugyo, Uganda, November 2007-February 2008, was caused by a putative new species (Bundibugyo ebolavirus). It included 93 putative cases, 56 laboratory-confirmed cases, and 37 deaths (CFR = 25%). Study objectives are to describe clinical manifestations and case management for 26 hospitalised laboratory-confirmed EHF patients. Clinical findings are congruous with previously reported EHF infections. The most frequently experienced symptoms were non-bloody diarrhoea (81%), severe headache (81%), and asthenia (77%). Seven patients reported or were observed with haemorrhagic symptoms, six of whom died. Ebola care remains difficult due to the resource-poor setting of outbreaks and the infection-control procedures required. However, quality data collection is essential to evaluate case definitions and therapeutic interventions, and needs improvement in future epidemics. Organizations usually involved in EHF case management have a particular responsibility in this respect

Our analysis is based on firm-specific data compiled from the Russian Trading System stock exchange and SKRIN (CKP-H in Russian) database. We seek to identify the factors behind Russias dramatically improved corporate sector performance from the beginning of the 2000s to December 2007. We argue that improved long-term corporate performance was a consequence of several policy initiatives associated with the state-dominated banking sector, which enabled statesubsidized investment funds to be channeled from a structurally reengineered energy sector to targeted investment projects located in other industries.     Effectiveness of rapid SARS-CoV-2 genome sequencing in supporting infection control for hospital-onset COVID-19 infection : multicenter, prospective study

    Background: Viral sequencing of SARS-CoV-2 has been used for outbreak investigation, but there is limited evidence supporting routine use for infection prevention and control (IPC) within hospital settings. Methods: We conducted a prospective non-randomised trial of sequencing at 14 acute UK hospital trusts. Sites each had a 4-week baseline data-collection period, followed by intervention periods comprising 8 weeks of 'rapid' (<48h) and 4 weeks of 'longer-turnaround' (5-10 day) sequencing using a sequence reporting tool (SRT). Data were collected on all hospital onset COVID-19 infections (HOCIs; detected ≄48h from admission). The impact of the sequencing intervention on IPC knowledge and actions, and on incidence of probable/definite hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) was evaluated. Results: A total of 2170 HOCI cases were recorded from October 2020-April 2021, corresponding to a period of extreme strain on the health service, with sequence reports returned for 650/1320 (49.2%) during intervention phases. We did not detect a statistically significant change in weekly incidence of HAIs in longer-turnaround (incidence rate ratio 1.60, 95%CI 0.85-3.01; P=0.14) or rapid (0.85, 0.48-1.50; P=0.54) intervention phases compared to baseline phase. However, IPC practice was changed in 7.8% and 7.4% of all HOCI cases in rapid and longer-turnaround phases, respectively, and 17.2% and 11.6% of cases where the report was returned. In a 'per-protocol' sensitivity analysis there was an impact on IPC actions in 20.7% of HOCI cases when the SRT report was returned within 5 days. Capacity to respond effectively to insights from sequencing was breached in most sites by the volume of cases and limited resources. Conclusion: While we did not demonstrate a direct impact of sequencing on the incidence of nosocomial transmission, our results suggest that sequencing can inform IPC response to HOCIs, particularly when returned within 5 days.
