    An existential-phenomenological investigation of the experience of gay men acknowledging to themselves that they are attracted to other men

    There are an abundance of studies regarding the development of sexual identity and sexual orientation that have served as the foundational underpinnings for exploring sexual orientation development. To date, however, findings from these studies have failed to constitute a significant resource for understanding the gay man’s experience of acknowledging to himself that he is attracted to other men. By identifying the essential constituents of this experience, this existential phenomenological study provides a starting point for further exploration. Written narrative accounts were obtained from seven men who identified sexually as gay and a method of existential-phenomenological analysis was applied to reveal the prereflective constituents of the experience described. The analysis yielded a new perspective on the experience of gay men and their attraction to other men that has the capacity to change the way practising clinicians, educators, counsellors and future researchers treat and understand the Queer community

    Implementation of a Matrix Crack Spacing Parameter in a Continuum Damage Mechanics Finite Element Model

    Continuum Damage Mechanics (CDM) based progressive damage and failure analysis (PDFA) methods have demonstrated success in a variety of finite element analysis (FEA) implementations. However, the technical maturity of CDM codes has not yet been proven for the full design space of composite materials in aerospace applications. CDM-based approaches represent the presence of damage by changing the local material stiffness definitions and without updating the original mesh or element integration schemes. Without discretely representing cracks and their paths through the mesh, damage in models with CDM-based materials is often distributed in a region of partially damaged elements ahead of stress concentrations. Having a series of discrete matrix cracks represented by a softened region may affect predictions of damage propagation and, thus, structural failure. This issue can be mitigated by restricting matrix damage development to discrete, fiber-aligned rows of elements; hence CDM-based matrix cracks can be implemented to be more representative of discrete matrix cracks. This paper evaluates the effect of restricting CDM matrix crack development to discrete, fiber-aligned rows where the spacing of these rows is controlled by a user-defined crack spacing parameter. Initially, the effect of incrementally increasing matrix crack spacing in a unidirectional center notch coupon is evaluated. Then, the lessons learned from the center notch specimen are applied to open-hole compression finite element models. Results are compared to test data, and the limitations, successes, and potential of the matrix crack spacing approach are discussed

    How Do Auditors Behave During Periods of Market Euphoria? The Case of Internet IPOs

    The study of periods of market euphoria, such as Holland’s seventeenth-century tulip mania, England’s eighteenth-century South Sea Company, America’s nineteenth-century railroads, or, most recently, the U.S. housing market, is a topic of long-standing interest to economists. Theorists specify conditions under which market participants and institutions cause "bubbles" to arise and persist and empiricists test participant-centric or institution- centric explanations (Hong, Scheinkman, and Xiong 2008; Schultz 2008; Greenwood and Nagel 2009). In this paper, we study a different participant other than one that stands to gain from price fluctuations. We are interested in how auditors behave during periods of market euphoria. Given their gatekeeper responsibility to act in the public’s interest, along with the seeming inevitability of bubbles (Rampell 2009), it is important to study how auditors behave during euphoric market conditions. To address this question, we examine auditor going-concern (GC) opinions around the time of the wave of stressed Internet firms filing to go public on NASDAQ, the capital markets entry point for the companies that went on to constitute "dotcom mania"

    A ‘Force for Good’? Police Reform in Post?conflict Sierra Leone

    The Sierra Leone Police Force has its origins in British colonial administration. After Independence and with the consolidation of one?party rule the force slid into disrepute. The outbreak of civil conflict in 1991 largely decimated the force but the gradual restoration of peace provided an opportunity for police reform. This article covers the aspects of the political and institutional environment that helped engender change, as well as constraints faced by the reform agenda. It considers how the officers actually carried out the task at hand, and shares lessons as to what reform tactics worked and which were less successful. While several challenges remain, the reform programme has been largely successful, hinging on – among other factors – the appointment of a British Inspector General of Police; the availability of a core of reform?minded officers; long?term external technical and financial assistance; and a conducive political environment for change

    Assessment of Intralaminar Progressive Damage and Failure Analysis Using an Efficient Evaluation Framework

    Reducing the timeline for development and certification for composite structures has been a long standing objective of the aerospace industry. This timeline can be further exacerbated when attempting to integrate new fiber-reinforced composite materials due to the large number of testing required at every level of design. computational progressive damage and failure analysis (PDFA) attempts to mitigate this effect; however, new PDFA methods have been slow to be adopted in industry since material model evaluation techniques have not been fully defined. This study presents an efficient evaluation framework which uses a piecewise verification and validation (V&V) approach for PDFA methods. Specifically, the framework is applied to evaluate PDFA research codes within the context of intralaminar damage. Methods are incrementally taken through various V&V exercises specifically tailored to study PDFA intralaminar damage modeling capability. Finally, methods are evaluated against a defined set of success criteria to highlight successes and limitations

    Creativity in Virtual Teams: A Review and Agenda for Future Research

    As communication technology capabilities have improved and the globalization of the workforce has resulted in distributed teams, organizations have been shifting towards virtual teams and virtual meetings over the last decade. This trend has been accelerated with current work-from-home orders due to COVID-19. Even though virtual collaboration has, in the past, been the focus of multiple studies, there are some surprising gaps in our knowledge. For instance, there are few empirical studies examining the impact of virtual devices and tools on creative problem-solving. While there is a substantial body of research on electronic brainstorming and the use of virtual tools for idea generation, less is known about earlier processes such as problem construction or later processes such as idea evaluation and idea selection. Furthermore, as a dynamic process, creativity and innovation is heavily influenced by the people engaged in the process and their collaborative environment, yet there is a gap in the literature regarding the type of virtual tools used in the process (i.e., audio + video vs. audio alone, or the use of file-sharing technologies). In this paper, we will review the current literature on virtual teams, virtual meetings, and creativity. We will then explore theoretical frameworks such as media richness theory that can help us understand how virtuality and virtual tools may influence team creativity across the dynamic range of the creative problem-solving process. Finally, given the limited research in the domain of virtual team creativity we provide questions to help guide future research. Research questions will help identify those areas where virtual teams may be beneficial for creativity and areas where virtual teams may be likely to perform less effectively on creative tasks
