    EduBal: An open balancing robot platform for teaching control and system theory

    In this work we present EduBal, an educational open-source hardware and software platform for a balancing robot. The robot is designed to be low-cost, safe and easy to use by students for control education. Along with the robot we present example tasks from system identification as well as SISO and MIMO control. Using Simulink, students can quickly implement their control algorithms on the robot. Individual control parameters can be tuned online while analyzing the resulting behavior in live signal plots. At RWTH Aachen University and ETH Zurich 28 units have so far been built and used in control classes. In first laboratory experiences students show high intrinsic motivation and creativity to apply the studied concepts of control theory to the real system.Comment: Accepted for publication at the 21st IFAC World Congress 202

For the qualitative development of mass inbound and domestic tourism in the regions of Russia, in particular in the city of Novosibirsk, it is necessary to pay special attention to excursion services. It is the sightseeing tours that create the first impression of the city at its guests. From the excursion activity in many respects depends on how the tourists will perceive the places visited, whether they will want to visit them again.     Dynamic changes of left ventricular performance and left atrial volume induced by the mueller maneuver in healthy young adults and implications for obstructive sleep apnea, atrial fibrillation, and heart failure.

    Using the Mueller maneuver (MM) to simulate obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), our aim was to investigate acute changes in left-sided cardiac morphologic characteristics and function which might develop with apneas occurring during sleep. Strong evidence supports a relation between OSA and both atrial fibrillation and heart failure. However, acute effects of airway obstruction on cardiac structure and function have not been well defined. In addition, it is unclear how OSA might contribute to the development of atrial fibrillation and heart failure. Echocardiography was used in healthy young adults to measure various parameters of cardiac structure and function. Subjects were studied at baseline, during, and immediately after performance of the MM and after a 10-minute recovery. Continuous heart rate, blood pressure, and pulse oximetry measurements were made. During the MM, left atrial (LA) volume index markedly decreased. Left ventricular (LV) end-systolic dimension increased in association with a decrease in LV ejection fraction. On release of the maneuver, there was a compensatory increase in blood flow to the left side of the heart, with stroke volume, ejection fraction, and cardiac output exceeding baseline. After 10 minutes of recovery, all parameters returned to baseline. In conclusion, sudden imposition of severe negative intrathoracic pressure led to an abrupt decrease in LA volume and a decrease in LV systolic performance. These changes reflected an increase in LV afterload. Repeated swings in afterload burden and chamber volumes may have implications for the future development of atrial fibrillation and heart failure

    Human Neurospheres as Three-Dimensional Cellular Systems for Developmental Neurotoxicity Testing

    Bac k g r o u n d: Developmental neurotoxicity (DNT) of environmental chemicals is a serious threat to human health. Current DNT testing guidelines propose investigations in rodents, which require large numbers of animals. With regard to the β€œ3 Rs ” (reduction, replacement, and refinement) of animal testing and the European regulation of chemicals [Registration, Evaluation, and Authorisation of Chemicals (REACH)], alternative testing strategies are needed in order to refine and reduce animal experiments and allow faster and less expensive screening. Objectives: The goal of this study was to establish a three-dimensional test system for DNT screening based on human fetal brain cells. Met h o d s: We established assays suitable for detecting disturbances in basic processes of brain development by employing human neural progenitor cells (hNPCs), which grow as neurospheres. Furthermore, we assessed effects of mercury and oxidative stress on these cells. Re s u l t s: We found that human neurospheres imitate proliferation, differentiation, and migration in vitro. Exposure to the proapoptotic agent staurosporine further suggests that human neurospheres possess functioning apoptosis machinery. The developmental neurotoxicants methylmercury chloride and mercury chloride decreased migration distance and number of neuronal-like cells in differentiated hNPCs. Furthermore, hNPCs undergo caspase-independent apoptosis when exposed toward high amounts of oxidative stress. Co n c l u s i o n s: Human neurospheres are likely to imitate basic processes of brain development, and these processes can be modulated by developmental neurotoxicants.     Balancing intestinal and systemic inflammation through cell type-specific expression of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor repressor

    As a sensor of polyaromatic chemicals the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) exerts an important role in immune regulation besides its requirement for xenobiotic metabolism. Transcriptional activation of AhR target genes is counterregulated by the AhR repressor (AhRR) but the exact function of the AhRR in vivo is currently unknown. We here show that the AhRR is predominantly expressed in immune cells of the skin and intestine, different from other AhR target genes. Whereas AhRR antagonizes the anti-inflammatory function of the AhR in the context of systemic endotoxin shock, AhR and AhRR act in concert to dampen intestinal inflammation. Specifically, AhRR contributes to the maintenance of colonic intraepithelial lymphocytes and prevents excessive IL- 1Ξ² production and Th17/Tc17 differentiation. In contrast, the AhRR enhances IFN-Ξ³-production by effector T cells in the inflamed gut.
