Thermodynamics models of a single and a non-common double stage ammonia-water absorption chiller that use waste heat (from three reciprocating engines of 8.7 MW each one) are developed to analyze the performance of the chiller for different operative conditions. A comparison of a single stage refrigeration system with the two stages proposed system is performed in this paper. The coefficient of performance (COP) obtained for both systems are the same, but the heat flux removed from the cooling media with the two-stage system increase from 1.3MW (single stage) until 1.6 MW due to the heat recovered increased with the second generator. The heat recovered used by the chiller was 3.8 MW, and the utilization factor of the cogeneration plant was 58.11%, and the cooling capacity of the equipment was 1,623 kW. Finally, the estimated economics savings for electric power due to the implementation of the absorption chiller that uses exhaust gases in place of a common refrigeration system by vapor compression with the same cooling capacity was 142,000.00 USD/year.

DETC2005-84330 METHODOLOGY TO REACH OPTIMAL DESIGN OF CHP PLANTS

ABSTRACT A methodology to reach the best CHP plant design is proposed. The standard method to choose the best fit in the process design of a CHP plant is improved considering offdesign simulation of the pre-selected schemes. The off-design simulation deals specifically with economic dispatch optimization applied on each pre-selected plant to calculate the operation performance under well-known heat and power loads. The economic dispatch include fuel, uniform series payments related with investment and operation & maintenance costs and evaluates the variable behavior for power and heat along time with a scenario that takes into account transactions with the utility grid as well as auxiliary or back up boilers. It is shown the different result reached in each approach and the new point of view gotten with the use of the methodology proposed

Objective: To determine if bacteria (Ureaplasma parvum and Sneathia spp.) associated with intra-amniotic infection can trigger the induction of cytokine Thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) in human amnion epithelial cells (hAECs) in vitro. Material or subjects: Amniotic fluid and chorioamniotic membrane (CAM) were collected from women with sPTL who delivered at term (n=30) or preterm without intra-amniotic inflammation (n=34), with sterile intra-amniotic inflammation (SIAI, n=27), or with intra-amniotic infection (IAI, n=17). Amnion epithelial cells (AECs), Ureaplasma parvum, and Sneathia spp. were also utilized. Methods: The expression of TSLP, TSLPR, and IL-7Rα was evaluated in amniotic fluid or CAM by RT-qPCR and/or immunoassays. AECs co-cultured with Ureaplasma parvum or Sneathia spp. were evaluated for TSLP expression by immunofluorescence and/or RT-qPCR. Results: TSLP was elevated in amniotic fluid of women with SIAI or IAI and expressed by the CAM. TSLPR and IL-7Rα had detectable gene and protein expression in the CAM; yet, CRLF2 was specifically elevated with IAI. While TSLP localized to all layers of the CAM and increased with SIAI or IAI, TSLPR and IL-7Rα were minimal and became most apparent with IAI. Co-culture experiments indicated that Ureaplasma parvum and Sneathia amnii upregulated TSLP expression in AECs. Conclusions: Ureaplasma parvum and Sneathia spp. triggers induction of TSLP, a central component of the intra-amniotic host response during sPTL

Asymmetrical vibrational energy propagation through double or single bonds of small organic molecules. An ab-initio molecular dynamics study

    No full text
The present study evaluates the vibrational energy propagation from an O[dbnd]C stretching through the double or single bonds of two small carboxamide molecules. The results show that double bonding facilitates vibrational energy flow while single bonding blockades energy protrusion. Similarly, the direct injection of vibrational energy at a single bond precludes the dissipation of vibrational energy to the rest of the molecular structure generating a vibrational trapping effect. Correlation between bond oscillations and molecular orbital energy fluctuation are analyzed. The presence or absence of those correlations seems to be determinant for vibrational energy flow at the molecular scale

Identifying Predictors for Inflammation-Induced Preterm Birth: A Murine Study

Introduction: Preterm birth is the leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality worldwide. A large proportion of preterm deliveries is affected by intra-amniotic inflammation, which can occur in the presence (intra-amniotic infection) or absence (sterile intra-amniotic inflammation) of microbes. Studies have shown an association between intra-amniotic inflammation, cervical shortening, and changes in the cervicovaginal microbiome. However, their causal relationships are unknown. This study aims to determine the causality of intra-amniotic inflammation, cervical shortening, and cervicovaginal microbiome alterations. Methods: Pregnant C57BL/6 dams received an ultrasound-guided intra-amniotic injection of an endotoxin lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or the alarmin interleukin-1 alpha (IL-1 alpha) on 16.5 days post-coitum (n = 6-8 per group) to model intra-amniotic infection- or sterile intra-amniotic inflammation-associated preterm birth. Control dams were injected with saline (n=6-8). Cervical length was measured by ultrasound at time zero and 6-hours post-injection. In a second cohort of injected dams, cervical and vaginal tissues were collected 6 hours post-injection (n = 6 per group) for cervicovaginal microbiome analyses via 16S rRNA sequencing. Results: Dams that received intra-amniotic injections of LPS and IL-1 showed greater percentage of cervical shortening when compared to controls. Microbiome analyses showed taxonomic differences in the bacterial profiles of the cervical and vaginal tissues. However, there were no differences in bacterial profile richness/heterogeneity, composition/structure, and bacterial taxa abundance between the two contrasting groups using generalized linear models, PERMANOVA, LefSe, and ANCOM-BC analyses, respectively. Conclusion: Alarmin- and endotoxin-induced intra-amniotic inflammation led to cervical shortening, and this was not associated with an acute alteration of the cervicovaginal microbiome

Fourier transform and convolutions on L(p) of a vector measure on a compact Hausdorff abelian group

The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s00041-012-9252-3"Let ν be a countably additive vector measure defined on the Borel subsets of a compact Hausdorff abelian group G. In this paper we define and study a vector valued Fourier transform and a vector valued convolution for functions which are (weakly) integrable with respect to ν. A form of the Riemann Lebesgue Lemma and a Uniqueness Theorem are established in this context. In order to study the vector valued convolution we discuss the invariance under reflection in G of these spaces of integrable functions. Finally we present a Young’s type inequality in this setting and several relevant examples, namely related with the vector measure associated to different important classical operators coming from Harmonic Analysis.J.M.
