    Manuscript contexts and the transmission of the Agnus Castus herbal in MS Sloane 3160

    MS Sloane 3160 is a miscellaneous volume containing one copy of the herbal Agnus Castus in Middle English. Traditionally, editions focused on texts in isolation and did not look in detail to the rest of the material, diminishing the potential of manuscript contexts in explaining how texts flow and are received by a specific audience. If we consider these groupings of texts a collective product in which all the co-texts are part of an internal dialogue, the importance of looking at the whole volume from a collective perspective becomes paramount in understanding the final aim of the compiler, and the processes of transmission of text and/or texts. The objective of this article has been to study the arrangement of the material contained in MS Sloane 3160 as a starting point to frame future comparison with manuscripts containing the same herbal. The results point to the identification of patterns which would confirm the “anthologistic impulse” (Lerer 2000). The structure of this manuscript would contain a spectrum of the most important areas that would cover the contents of a typical vademecum of the time, including religious texts, but more studies are needed in order to be able to assess these contexts in medical miscellanies. The impact and transmission of the Agnus Castus herbal needs to be studied collectively, and assessing the manuscript contexts in which the text is naturally embedded points to the right direction in understanding all the processes therein

The society’s approach to the generation of wealth encompasses different concepts, movements, approaches, and ways of acting, all of which pose a challenge to the determination of a precise definition. Within the European Union (E.U.), a common legislative base has been developed, although the specific legislation developed by each Member State has been uneven. The legislation may have started from the same common principles, but each country has adopted different legal forms. This work aims to outline the diverse ways of legislating on a concept that is still under construction and within similar legal frameworks, illustrating the lack of harmony between European states that, despite the sharing of borders and having common legislative foundations, distance themselves in the final legislation, a situation that does not benefit the economic unity of entrepreneurs with social principles

    IFAC WORLD CONGRESS (16) (16.2005.PRAGA, REPĂšBLICA CHECA)This paper describes the control of a batch pH reactor by a nonlinear predictive controller that improves performance by using data of past batches. The control strategy combines the feedback features of a nonlinear predictive controller with the learning capabilities of run-to-run control. The inclusion of real-time data collected during the on-going batch run in addition to those from the past runs make the control strategy capable not only of eliminating repeated errors but also of responding to new disturbances that occur during the run. The paper uses these ideas to devise an integrated controller that increases the capabilities of Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (NMPC) with batch-wise learning. This controller tries to improve existing strategies by the use of a nonlinear controller devised along the last-run trajectory as well as by the inclusion of filters. A comparison with a similar controller based upon a linear model is performed. Simulation results are presented in order to illustrate performance improvements that can be achieved by the new method over the conventional iterative controllers. Although the controller is designed for discrete-time systems, it can be applied to stable continuous plants after discretization

    Iterative Nonlinear Control of a Semibatch Reactor. Stability Analysis

    This paper presents the application of Iterative Nonlinear Model Predictive Control, INMPC, to a semibatch chemical reactor. The proposed control approach is derived from a model-based predictive control formulation which takes advantage of the repetitive nature of batch processes. The proposed controller combines the good qualities of Model Predictive Control (MPC) with the possibility of learning from past batches, that is the base of Iterative Control. It uses a nonlinear model and a quadratic objective function that is optimized in order to obtain the control law. A stability proof with unitary control horizon is given for nonlinear plants that are affine in control and have linear output map. The controller shows capabilities to learn the optimal trajectory after a few iterations, giving a better fit than a linear non-iterative MPC controller. The controller has applications in repetitive disturbance rejection, because they do not modify the model for control purposes. In this application, some experiments with a disturbance in inlet water temperature has been performed, getting good results.Ministerio de Ciencia y TecnologĂ­a DPI2004-07444-C04-0
