The Canarian juniper woodland, dominated by Juniperus turbinata ssp. canariensis, is a priority habitat and is among the most endangered ecosystems of the European Union. Saplings of 12 species were planted between March 2006 and January 2008 within the Rural Park of Teno (Tenerife) during a LIFE reforestation project. To assess the replanting effectiveness, six 25 × 25 m permanent plots were established for monitoring plant conditions in 2014. We report the results of annual surveys up to 2019. We recorded vitality, phenology and size of 225 planted individuals belonging to eight different species. The vitality showed general positive trends, with a low 2018 decrease. Around 30% of surviving saplings displayed flowers or fruits in 2019. Juniperus turbinata ssp. canariensis and Olea cerasiformis presented a significant increment for all the growth traits, but only the juniper showed locally varied patterns of growth. We expect that the monitoring will contribute useful insights for other restoration projects for the endangered Canary endemic thermophilous woodland.

Introduction: Bronchial aspirates (BAS) obtained during invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) constitutes a useful tool for molecular phenotyping and decision making. Aim: To identify the proteomic determinants associated with disease pathogenesis, all-cause mortality and respiratory sequelae in BAS samples from critically ill patients with SARS-CoV-2-induced ARDS. Methods: Multicenter study including 74 critically ill patients with COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 ARDS. BAS were obtained by bronchoaspiration after IMV initiation. Three hundred sixty-four proteins were quantified using proximity extension assay (PEA) technology. Random forest models were used to assess predictor importance. Results: After adjusting for confounding factors, CST5, NADK, SRPK2 and TGFa were differentially detected in COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 patients. In random forest models for COVID-19, CST5, DPP7, NADK, KYAT1 and TYMP showed the highest variable importance. In COVID-19 patients, reduced levels of ENTPD2 and PTN were observed in nonsurvivors of ICU stay, even after adjustment. AGR2, NQO2, IL-1a, OSM and TRAIL showed the strongest associations with in-ICU mortality and were used to construct a proteinbased prediction model. Kaplan-Meier curves revealed a clear separation in mortality risk between subgroups of PTN, ENTPD2 and the prediction model. Cox regression models supported these findings. In survivors, the levels of FCRL1, NTF4 and THOP1 in BAS samples obtained during the ICU stay correlated with lung function (i.e., DLCO levels) 3 months after hospital discharge. Similarly, Flt3L and THOP1 levels were correlated with radiological features (i.e., TSS). These proteins are expressed in immune and nonimmune lung cells. Poor host response to viral infectivity and an inappropriate reparative mechanism seem to be linked with the pathogenesis of the disease and fatal outcomes, respectively. Conclusion: BAS proteomics identified novel factors associated with the pathology of SARS-CoV-2-induced ARDS and its adverse outcomes. BASbased protein testing emerges as a novel tool for risk assessment in the ICU

Anthropological realities in different contexts: considerations of some topics in physical health

In the present paper, the authors consider how Anthropology - by means of comparing different cultural contexts - could make us change our vision of some truths or dogmas such as health and illness, and could allow us to observe above all the real meaning of mental health. The authors discuss as well the various ways in which Anthropology could help in launching the concept of an holistic care, a humanistic concept capable of integrating social and cultural realities far from the positivist pattern of understanding the human being

FITeens Toolkit: promoting health-related behaviors in the educational context

    No full text
Children and adolescents acquire different habits as they grow up. Some of these habits are closely related to health, so acquiring healthy habits can greatly help them lead a healthy and peaceful life in the future, while bad habits can be detrimental to them. For that reason, it is necessary that from the different educational institutions, we help these young people in the acquisition of these habits. The aim of FITeens (Promoting physical activity and healthy habits in sedentary teenagers) project is to pilot an entertaining and engaging educational intervention targeted at teenagers to promote physical activity and healthy habits This first result of the project consists of a comprehensive set of ideas, resources, practices and some examples for Physical Education teachers that will cover the different key behaviors that increase the risk of chronic diseases (physical activity, sufficient sleep, moderate screen time, alcohol and tobacco consumption, and healthy food intake) that can be incorporated into their teaching practice. This toolkit consists of 3 different modules: 1. High schools as effective settings to promote healthy lifestyles. This module covers the importance of schools in the acquisition of healthy habits by adolescents. 2. Motivation as a key to physical activity promotion. This module focuses on the importance of motivation in the acquisition of healthy habits. 3. Health-related behaviors in young people. This module will focus on the key health-related behaviors mentioned above (physical activity, sufficient sleep, moderate screen time, alcohol and tobacco use, and healthy food intake), describing each of them in depth. All of these modules are dedicated to the different health-related behaviors mentioned above. Each of them will have a theoretical explanation, explanatory videos, infographics and learning situations that will support Physical Education teachers in acquiring a broad knowledge of how to get their students motivated to engage in physical activity and acquire healthy habits, making them aware of their importance.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
