Smart Footwear Insole for Recognition of Foot Pronation and Supination Using Neural Networks
Abnormal foot postures during gait are common sources of pain and pathologies of the
lower limbs. Measurements of foot plantar pressures in both dynamic and static conditions can detect
these abnormal foot postures and prevent possible pathologies. In this work, a plantar pressure
measurement system is developed to identify areas with higher or lower pressure load. This system
is composed of an embedded system placed in the insole and a user application. The instrumented
insole consists of a low-power microcontroller, seven pressure sensors and a low-energy bluetooth
module. The user application receives and shows the insole pressure information in real-time and,
finally, provides information about the foot posture. In order to identify the different pressure states
and obtain the final information of the study with greater accuracy, a Deep Learning neural network
system has been integrated into the user application. The neural network can be trained using a
stored dataset in order to obtain the classification results in real-time. Results prove that this system
provides an accuracy over 90% using a training dataset of 3000+ steps from 6 different users.
This project called ExoKit consists on the creation of a prototype of exoskeleton for
its use in people with reduced mobility in arms and hands. It’s focused on training
the patient with different types of exercises and efforts to help in the tasks of
recovery of movement and thus increase the mobility of these parts of the body
mentioned above. To perform these functions, the prototype consists of: an exohand
that allows the user’s fingers to move thanks to the use of motors, an exo-arm
that has a motor in the elbow that helps arm movement and a software application
with the one that the user interacts with the exoskeleton and allows the training
and data collection of the same. The exo-hand can imitate the movements of the
user’s hand from a sensor that measures the degree of activity of the hand muscle,
while the exo-arm calculates the degree of curvature as a function of its position.
The hardware components of the prototype are interconnected with the software
applications thanks to the microcontroller connected to the serial port of the PC. The
software application consists of two games in which each of them trains a different
part: a Pong style game with which the user trains the movement of the arm and
depending on their degree of mobility, the exo-arm is adapted to offer more or less
help, and a game with which to train the movement of the arm as well as the hand,
in which the exo-hand adapts to the degree of mobility of the user’s hand.

The Covid-19 pandemic has caused a digital transformation in university teaching that has yet to be assessed and analyzed in all its dimensions. Faced with this, institutions have developed different strategies, also in network, to train teachers. This paper offers a university program, #webinarsUNIA, framed in annual university teacher training plans from 2013-14 but open and free of charge for anyone interested. We focused on the results of the 2020-21 edition, with twenty seminars in response to teacher training demands due to the sudden and rapid virtualization of their programs during the pandemic and with a total of 10,933 participants from different geographical origins. To measure their satisfaction, surveys were designed with Cronbach's alpha 0.789, which considered, among other dimensions: organization, teachers, contents and format of the activities. The evaluation was optional and obtained a sample of 1908 responses (34% of those who completed the training). The outcomes were generally rather positive because they met the principle of relevance in the objectives, gathered in a needs survey prior to the design and timeliness in the format. In addition, they paved the way for the generation of new resources and learning products in SPOC format, which are very useful for training a large number of teachers on digital competences, educational innovation and e-learning in the Covid-19 scenario.
ED-Scorbot: A Robotic test-bed Framework for FPGA-based Neuromorphic systems
Neuromorphic engineering is a growing and
promising discipline nowadays. Neuro-inspiration and
brain understanding applied to solve engineering
problems is boosting new architectures, solutions and
products today. The biological brain and neural systems
process information at relatively low speeds through
small components, called neurons, and it is impressive how
they connect each other to construct complex
architectures to solve in a quasi-instantaneous way
visual and audio processing tasks, object detection and
tracking, target approximation, grasping…, etc., with very
low power. Neuromorphs are beginning to be very promising
for a new era in the development of new sensors,
processors, robots and software systems that mimic
these biological systems. The event-driven Scorbot (EDScorbot)
is a robotic arm plus a set of FPGA / microcontroller’s
boards and a library of FPGA logic joined in a completely
event-based framework (spike-based) from the sensors to the
actuators. It is located in Seville (University of Seville) and
can be used remotely. Spike-based commands, through
neuro-inspired motor controllers, can be sent to the
robot after visual processing object detection and
tracking for grasping or manipulation, after complex
visual and audio-visual sensory fusion, or after performing
a learning task. Thanks to the cascade FPGA
architecture through the Address-Event-Representation
(AER) bus, supported by specialized boards, resources for
algorithms implementation are not limited.
Changes in visual function and retinal structure in the progression of Alzheimer's disease
Background: Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) can cause degeneration in the retina and optic nerve either directly, as a result of amyloid beta deposits, or secondarily, as a result of the degradation of the visual cortex. These effects raise the possibility that tracking ophthalmologic changes in the retina can be used to assess neurodegeneration in AD. This study aimed to detect retinal changes and associated functional changes in three groups of patients consisting of AD patients with mild disease, AD patients with moderate disease and healthy controls by using non-invasive psychophysical ophthalmological tests and optical coherence tomography (OCT).
Methods: We included 39 patients with mild AD, 21 patients with moderate AD and 40 age-matched healthy controls. Both patients and controls were ophthalmologically healthy. Visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, colour perception, visual integration, and choroidal thicknesses were measured. In addition, OCT and OCT angiography (OCTA) were applied.
Findings: Visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, colour perception, and visual integration were significantly lower in AD patients than in healthy controls. Compared to healthy controls, macular thinning in the central region was significant in the mild AD patients, while macular thickening in the central region was found in the moderate AD group. The analysis of macular layers revealed significant thinning of the retinal nerve fibre layer, the ganglion cell layer and the outer plexiform layer in AD patients relative to controls. Conversely, significant thickening was observed in the outer nuclear layer of the patients. However, mild AD was associated with significant thinning of the subfovea and the nasal and inferior sectors of the choroid. Significant superonasal and inferotemporal peripapillary thinning was observed in patients with moderate disease.
Conclusions: The first changes in the mild AD patients appear in the psychophysical tests and in the central macula with a decrease in the central retinal thickness. When there was a disease progression to moderate AD, psychophysical tests remained stable with respect to the decrease in mild AD, but significant thinning in the peripapillary retina and thickening in the central retina appeared. The presence of AD is best indicated based on contrast sensitivity
