    This volume consists of 29 original papers presented at the 12th Conference of European Researchers in Didactics of Biology (ERIDOB) organized by the University of Zaragoza in collaboration with University de Santiago de Compostela, hosted in July 2018 by the Faculty of Education, University of Zaragoza, Spain. Recognizing the importance and potential of being well-trained in biology, the bi-annual Conference of ERIDOB is now a firmly established and leading forum for European and non-European researchers to discuss and reflect on research in biology education, to find new ways of ensuring continued advances in teaching and learning this discipline. Biology is a field of research in constant growth. Its advances have brought not only enormous benefits to humanity in fields from Human Biology to Ecology, but also great repercussions in our daily lives. This context makes it necessary for biology education to equip young people with the tools and resources needed to become scientifically literate, critical thinkers and social activists. Some of these concerns are highlighted in this book, whose 29 papers have been selected after having passed a double blind review process by at least one member of the ERIDOB Academic Committee together with an experienced reviewer of the ERIDOB academic community. In the introduction of this volume the keynote conference, How to gather and analyse quality evidence about successful biology classrooms, presented by María Pilar Jiménez Aleixandre, methodological issues related to classroom studies are addressed. Special attention is on qualitative research studies and on successful biology teaching and learning with a double goal: 1) debriefing the processes leading to quality research studies; 2) providing teachers with models, rather than focusing on the problems of unsuccessful teaching

    Fuzzy decision making: A bibliometric-based review

    Fuzzy decision-making consists in making decisions under complex and uncertain environments where the information can be assessed with fuzzy sets and systems. The aim of this study is to review the main contributions in this field by using a bibliometric approach. For doing so, the article uses a wide range of bibliometric indicators including the citations and the h-index. Moreover, it also uses the VOS viewer software in order to map the main trends in this area. The work considers the leading journals, articles, authors and institutions. The results indicate that the USA was the traditional leader in this field with the most significant researcher. However, during the last years, this field is receiving more attention by Asian authors that are starting to lead the field. This discipline has a strong potential and the expectations for the future is that it will continue to grow

    Caminos divergentes para la protección social en salud en México

    Current political plurality in Mexico is expressed in different models of social policies and in the tension of the exercise of government between domestic and national levels. The objective of this paper was to contrasts the contents together with the main conflictive points of the national health policy (Mexico) against the domestic health policy (Mexico's Federal District). To achieve this goal, development plans, programmatic documents and budgets within the period 1994-2006 were analyzed. As a consequence, similarities and substantial differences were found regarding socio-sanitary diagnoses, agendas, strategies and priority programs.En México, la reciente pluralidad política se expresa en diferentes modelos de políticas sociales y en la tensión en el ejercicio de gobierno entre los niveles local y nacional. El objetivo de este trabajo fue contrastar los contenidos y ámbitos principales de conflictividad de la política de salud nacional (México) versus la política de salud local (Distrito Federal). Para ello, se analizaron planes de desarrollo, documentos programáticos, presupuestos e informes del período 1994-2006, en los que se encontraron similitudes en los diagnósticos sociosanitarios y diferencias sustanciales en las agendas, las estrategias y los programas prioritarios

    Subjective stakeholder dynamics relationships treatment: a methodological approach using fuzzy decision-making

    Since the stakeholder theory was proposed to explain the interaction among its agents, extensive approaches have been developed. However, the literature continues to suggest the development of new methodologies that allow an analysis of the dynamics and uncertainty of the relationships between each agent. In this sense, this research proposes a novel methodology for the treatment of subjective stakeholder dynamics using fuzzy decision-making. The study proposes a mathematical methodological perspective for the treatment of subjective relationships among stakeholders, which allows a predictive simulation tool to be developed for attitude and personal preferences to analyze the links among all stakeholders.     Improved stability of a compact vacuum-free laser-plasma X-ray source

    We report the development of a stable high-average power X-ray source generated by the interaction of ultrashort laser pulses (35 fs, 1 mJ, 1 kHz) with a solid target in air. The achieved source stability, which is essential for the applications foreseen for these laser-driven plasma accelerators, is due to the combination of precise positioning of the target on focus and the development of a fast rotating target system able to ensure the refreshment of the material at every shot while minimizing positioning errors with respect to the focal spot.     Thirty years of the international journal of intelligent systems: a bibliometric review

    The International Journal of Intelligent Systems was created in 1986. Today, the journal is 30 years old. To celebrate this anniversary, this study develops a bibliometric review of all of the papers published in the journal between 1986 and 2015. The results are largely based on the Web of Science Core Collection, which classifies leading bibliographic material by using several indicators including total number of publications and citations, the h-index, cites per paper, and citing articles. Thework also uses theVOS viewer software for visualizing the main results through bibliographic coupling and co-citation. The results show a general overview of leading trends that have influenced the journal in terms of highly cited papers, authors, journals, universities and countries. C 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc

    Climate-sensitive hydrological drought insurance for irrigated agriculture under deep uncertainty. Insightful results from the Cega River Basin in Spain

    This paper assesses the feasibility and robustness of an index-based insurance scheme against hydrological droughts under climate change. To this end, we develop a grand ensemble that samples both modeling and scenario uncertainty in the estimation of the insurance risk premium, so to reveal potential unfavorable surprises and minimize regret in the design of the proposed insurance scheme. The grand ensemble combines four microeconomic models and seven GAMLSS models, which are run for three alternative climate change scenarios: stationary climate/no climate change, RCP 2.6, and RCP 8.5. Methods are illustrated with an application to the Cega River Sub-basin (CRS) in central Spain. Results indicate that for a conventional deductible of 30%, the proposed index-based insurance scheme would be actuarially feasible and affordable under all models for the stationary climate scenario (i.e., robust). For climate change scenarios RCP 2.6 and 8.5 and a 30% deductible, the suggested index-based insurance would be actuarially feasible under most models, albeit some outliers point towards potential unfavorable surprises. Lower deductibles decrease feasibility, particularly for deductibles <10%

    Cardiac tissue engineering for myocardial infarction treatment

    Myocardial infarction is one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Current treatments can relieve the symptoms of myocardial ischemia but cannot repair the necrotic myocardial tissue. Novel therapeutic strategies based on cellular therapy, extracellular vesicles, non-coding RNAs and growth factors have been designed to restore cardiac function while inducing cardiomyocyte cycle re-entry, ensuring angiogenesis and cardioprotection, and preventing ventricular remodeling. However, they face low stability, cell engraftment issues or enzymatic degradation in vivo, and it is thus essential to combine them with biomaterial-based delivery systems. Microcarriers, nanocarriers, cardiac patches and injectable hydrogels have yielded promising results in preclinical studies, some of which are currently being tested in clinical trials. In this review, we cover the recent advances made in cellular and acellular therapies used for cardiac repair after MI. We present current trends in cardiac tissue engineering related to the use of microcarriers, nanocarriers, cardiac patches and injectable hydrogels as biomaterial-based delivery systems for biologics. Finally, we discuss some of the most crucial aspects that should be addressed in order to advance towards the clinical translation of cardiac tissue engineering approaches

    Analyzing training dependencies and posterior fusion in discriminant classification of apnoea patients based on sustained and connected speech

    We present a novel approach using both sustained vowels and connected speech, to detect obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) cases within a homogeneous group of speakers. The proposed scheme is based on state-of-the-art GMM-based classifiers, and acknowledges specifically the way in which acoustic models are trained on standard databases, as well as the complexity of the resulting models and their adaptation to specific data. Our experimental database contains a suitable number of utterances and sustained speech from healthy (i.e control) and OSA Spanish speakers. Finally, a 25.1% relative reduction in classification error is achieved when fusing continuous and sustained speech classifiers.
