    Goverment investments in schooling and infrastucture: Ramsey vs. public choice paths in a lifecycle growth model

    Government financing of schooling is necessitated by capital market imperfections. Governments are also responsible for maintaining a stock of public capital that enters private production function. In this paper the welfare implications and politics of these investments are examined in a version of Diamond (1965) growth model. It is argued that in decentralized environments where the working generation is decisive each period significant underinvestment in both schooling and infrastructure will be observed relative to the Ramsey equilibrium.

    Resumen: El presente artículo examina el efecto de las tasas marginales del impuesto sobre la renta en el mercado laboral en México, utilizando una versión modificada del modelo de tributación sobre la renta personal de Rosen (1976). El estudio analiza las reacciones de los trabajadores asalariados del sector formal ante los cambios en la tasa marginal del impuesto sobre la renta. Prestamos especial atención a la muestra, con el fin de controlar en nuestros cálculos el problema del alto índice de evasión fiscal en México. Comprobamos como las horas de trabajo disminuyen cuando las tasas marginales del impuesto sobre la renta aumentan. Abstract: This paper examines the effect of marginal income tax rates on labor supply in Mexico using a modified version of Rosen´s (1976) personal income taxation model. The study analyzes how salaried workers of the formal sector react to changes in the marginal income tax rate. Special attention is given to the sample, in order to control the problem of the high level of tax evasion in Mexico in our estimation. We find evidence that hours of work diminish when marginal income tax rates increase

    Highly size-controlled synthesis of Au/Pd nanoparticles by inert-gas condensation

    Gold/Palladium nanoparticles were fabricated by inert-gas condensation on a sputtering reactor. With this method, by controlling both the atmosphere on the condensation chamber and the magnetron power, it was possible to produce nanoparticles with a high degree of monodispersity in size. The structure and size of the Au/Pd nanoparticles were determined by mass spectroscopy, and confirmed by atomic force microscopy and electron transmission microscopy measurements. The chemical composition was analyzed by X-ray microanalysis. From these measurements we confirmed that with the sputtering technique we are able to produce particles of 1, 3, and 5 nm on size, depending on the choice of the synthesis conditions. From TEM measurements made both in the regular HREM, as well as in STEM-HAADF mode, we found that the particles are icosahedral in shape, and the micrographs show no evidence of a core-shell structure, in contrast to what is observed in the case of nanoparticles prepared by chemical synthesis

    On the structure of Au/Pd bimetallic nanoparticles

    We performed a study on bimetallic Au/Pd nanoparticles using aberration corrected electron microscopy along with molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the features of specific atomic sites at the surface, which can be related to the high catalytic activity properties of the particles. The calculations mimic the growth of nanoparticles through a cooling process from a molten solid to a crystalline structure at room temperature. We found that the final structure for the alloy particles is neither a cuboctahedral nor an icosahedral,but a complex structure that has a very rough surface and unique isolated Pd sites surrounded by Au atoms. We also found that there is predominance of three specific Pd sites at the surface, which can be directly related to the catalytic activity of the nanoparticle

    Nanoalloying in real time: a high resolution STEM and computer simulation study

    Bimetallic nanoparticles constitute a promising type of catalysts, mainly because their physical and chemical properties may be tuned by varying their chemical composition, atomic ordering, and size. Today, the design of novel nanocatalysts is possible through a combination of virtual lab simulations on massive parallel computing and modern electron microscopy with picometre resolution on one hand, and the capability of chemical analysis at the atomic scale on the other. In this work we show how the combination of theoretical calculations and characterization can solve some of the paradoxes reported about nanocatalysts: Au-Pd bimetallic nanoparticles. In particular, we demonstrate the key role played by adsorbates, such as carbon monoxide (CO), on the structure of nanoalloys.     Factores que afectan la producción agrícola bajo riego: cómo medirlos y estudiar su efecto

    Hay varios grupos de factores que afectan el rendimiento de los cultivos agrícolas bajo riego; entre ellos destacan los meteorológicos, los de manejo y los relativos a la variabilidad espacial de los terrenos. Los primeros pueden afectar de forma seria los rendimientos y es poco lo que puede hacerse para aminorar su efecto. Los de manejo dependen en gran parte de las decisiones que tomen los productores y de los medios que disponen para realizar sus actividades. El tercer grupo, que depende de la variabilidad espacial de los terrenos, tiene un notable efecto para los productores que rentan tierras que han sido cultivadas por otros productores o que presentan variabilidad debido a condiciones físicas del suelo y la forma en que se han manejado. En el Distrito de Riego 038 de Río Mayo, en Sonora, México, se le ha dado el seguimiento a los cultivos durante varios años mediante sensores remotos satelitales y se han podido medir los efectos de estos factores, así como generar recomendaciones para aminorar los impactos negativos en los rendimientos.
