Then the answer offered by the thomist Stephen L. Brock in his defense of the ipsum esse is set forth, with reference to the recent disputes regarding this issue in the socalled «analytical thomism». Application of HOSVD to Aerodynamics. The Problem of Shock Waves

    Get PDF
Efficient interpolation in aerodynamic databases is important for the aeronautic industry because of its implication on both the cost and time needed to complete design cycles. In this study a method based on high-order singular value decomposition is presented focusing on the problems associated with the shock wave like structures that do not suit well with this kind of methods. To illustrate the methodology, the flow around a two-dimensional airfoil is considered at a Reynolds number of 20 × 106 with three free parameters, namely, the Mach number, the angle of attack, and the flap deflection angle in the ranges of [0.4, 0.8], [¿3º, 3º], and [¿5º, 5º], respectively. The method is robust in the sense of being able to deal with very different flow topologies

This paper examines the status of form in the book Zeta of the Metaphysics from the perspective of contemporary debates. For this purpose, the paper discusses critical passages that led to the interpretation of Aristotelian forms in terms of particularity or universality. The aim is to determine if form in Aristotle is particular, i.e. unique and peculiar, or universal, i.e. common and shared by several individuals.

A Legal and Forensic Medicine Approach to Police Physical Intervention Techniques in High-Risk Situations

    Get PDF
Background: The physical intervention techniques (PITs) typically used by the police in troublesome situations are examined in terms of injuring potential depending on whether they target a body zone of high, medium or low vulnerability. Based on legal and forensic considerations, and principles of congruence, opportunity and proportionality, a need exists to favor opponent locking and arrest techniques targeting non-vulnerable zones to minimize the risk of severe damage. Methods: A search of the training manuals for the different kind of law of enforcement officers was carried out. Revision of injuries was available from electronic databases of academic o medical journals. Results: Three different locking and arrest PITs based on operational tactical procedures (OTP) that avoid zones of high or medium vulnerability are proposed. The new techniques use blocking, diverting and grabbing of the upper and lower limbs, followed by dislocation and locking of the same targets. Conclusions: The damaging potential of such PITs was assessed in terms of anatomical region and most were found to have a high risk of severe damage. The alternative PITs proposed here, which rely on OTP, improve in legal and forensic medical terms on existing choices and dramatically reduce the risk of injuring arrestees

The importance of Stakeholders in the current managerial world is forcing companies to keep them continually in mind. In addition, it causes the necessity of carrying out efforts aimed at integrating stakeholders’ demands into their politics and priorities in order to achieve their satisfaction. After analyzing the different aspects considered in the study of relationships with Stakeholders, and using both a descriptive and normative theory scope, we identify three dimensions in the process of stakeholders´ integration: the knowledge about them, their implication in the company through consulting and participation, and finally, the modification of enterprises’ politics and objectives in order to adapt to their demands. These dimensions are considered to be of special importance in ensuring Stakeholders’ satisfaction

Insulin resistance is associated with oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and a chronic low-grade inflammatory status. In this sense, cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2 NPs) are promising nanomaterials with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the effect of CeO2 NPs in mouse 3T3-L1 adipocytes, RAW 264.7 macrophages, and C2C12 myotubes under control or proinflammatory conditions. Macrophages were treated with LPS, and both adipocytes and myotubes with conditioned medium (25% LPS-activated macrophages medium) to promote inflammation. CeO2 NPs showed a mean size of ≤25.3 nm (96.7%) and a zeta potential of mV, suitable for cell internalization. CeO2 NPs reduced extracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) in adipocytes with inflammation while increased in myotubes with control medium. The CeO2 NPs increased mitochondrial content was observed in adipocytes under proinflammatory conditions. Furthermore, the expression of Adipoq and Il10 increased in adipocytes treated with CeO2 NPs. In myotubes, both Il1b and Adipoq were downregulated while Irs1 was upregulated. Overall, our results suggest that CeO2 NPs could potentially have an insulin-sensitizing effect specifically on adipose tissue and skeletal muscle. However, further research is needed to confirm these findings

Study of antitumor activity in breast cell lines using silver nanoparticles produced by yeast

In the present article, we describe a study of antitumor activity in breast cell lines using silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) synthesized by a microbiological method. These Ag NPs were tested for their antitumor activity against MCF7 and T47D cancer cells and MCF10-A normal breast cell line. We analyzed cell viability, apoptosis induction, and endocytosis activity of those cell lines and we observed that the effects of the biosynthesized Ag NPs were directly related with the endocytosis activity. Moreover, Ag NPs had higher inhibition efficacy in tumor lines than in normal lines of breast cells, which is due to the higher endocytic activity of tumor cells compared to normal cells. In this way, we demonstrate that biosynthesized Ag NPs can be an alternative for the treatment of tumors.Support from Universidad Nacional de San Luis, to the Agencia Nacional de Promoción Científica y Tecnológica, from Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas (CONICET) (Argentina), and from GENYO, Centre for Genomics and Oncological Research: Pfizer-University of Granada, Andalusian Regional Government, Granada, Spain are acknowledged

Existent literature, both from the instrumental as well as the normative Stakeholders’ Theory scope, has highlighted the influence of the relationships with the stakeholders on the enterprises´ performance, but this effect has been analyzed from a direct perspective. In the current paper, we develop the influence of the stakeholders’ integration on the enterprises´ performance, not from a direct way but using an indirect perspective, through other capacities such us innovation, or organizational learning. In addition, we argue that this indirect effect takes place in two ways: as a strengthen element of those capacities, or as a complementary asset on performance

Economic and technical evaluation of different systems of loquat protected crop

    Get PDF
The culture of loquat (Eryobotria japonica Lindl.) in the region of "La Marina Baixa" has a substantial social and economic impact. In order to get earlier cropping, different systems of polietylen mesh screens have been introduced. However this cultural practice produced some negative effects, such as the increasing of "purple spot" on the fruits. Appliyng water with microsprinklers reduces the percentage of fruits affected by "purple spot". The high cost of the equipment needed to install the mesh and microsprinklers showed the need of an evaluation and comparison of all systems employed. The results and conclusions are presented in this paper
