Litigation and Settlement: New Evidence from Labor Courts in Mexico

    Get PDF
Using a newly assembled data set on procedures filed in Mexican labor tribunals, we study the determinants of final awards to workers. On average, workers recover less than 30% of their claim. Our strongest result is that workers receive higher percentages of their claims in settlements than in trial judgments. We also find that cases with multiple claimants against a single firm are less likely to be settled, which partially explains why workers involved in these procedures receive lower percentages of their claims. Finally, we find evidence that a worker who exaggerates her claim is less likely to settle.

Why New Car Dealers Sell Used Cars: A Structural Analysis of the Impact of Used Car Markets on the Automobile Distribution Channel

    Get PDF
Most new car dealers also sell used cars from the same physical location. Used cars sold by these dealers are relatively good substitutes for new cars and thus, could compete with the new cars sold by the dealers. Previous empirical research on the automobile market has mostly ignored the presence of the used car market while the analytical literature provides ambivalent suggestions. In this paper, we study how the availability of used cars at new car dealers affects the substitution between new and used cars as well as how it affects the margins and profits obtained by the dealer and manufacturer. Using a transaction level dataset which contains both new and used car transactions, we perform a detailed empirical analysis to understand how the existence of the used car markets affect the new car market as well as the channel members. We build a full equilibrium structural model of new and used car competition with profit maximizing manufacturers and dealers. Using the estimated model we quantify the substitutability between new and used cars and compare it with a more conventional demand model which considers new cars only. We then proceed to analyze whether dealers consider the substitutability between new and used cars to shed light on how dealers price their cars. We then contrast the distribution of profits between the manufacturer and dealer to understand how the used markets affect the distribution of power in the channel. Our results indicate that the new car prices have a higher impact on used car demand than used car prices have on new car demand. We also find that the ability to price and sell used cars gives the dealer higher margins on new cars and increases their power in the channel

Visual assessment and diagnosis of a timber railway station warehouse in Foz do Tua

    Get PDF
Aiming at the rehabilitation of a timber warehouse in the Tua train station for a new use, it was necessary to assess the level of conservation of the building’s elements and determine whether intervention measures were required. This work summarizes the assessment made of the timber elements by means visual inspection and non-destructive testing. The main results, obtained in the diagnostic survey, were the conservation level of the timber warehouse, the visual strength grading of the timber elements and damage maps indicating the main pathologies and its probable causes. The drawings of the Tua station warehouse (artmetro, arquitetos associados 2011) were provided by the Architecture School Study Centre of University of Minho and their reproduction is acknowledged. The support of FEDER through COMPETE and of FCT within the scope of project POCI-01-0145-FEDER-007633 are acknowledged. Instantaneous messaging system: a distributed approach

    Get PDF
This work presents the development of an instantaneous messaging system, which is centered on the distributed handling of user groups. The method pro-posed for handling of groups has several distinctive characteristics: the non exis-tence of a moderator for each group, allowing any user to abandon the group at any moment without putting in danger the group's existence, and the absence of a server where the user must be authenticated every time that he wants to engage in conversation with somebody, which allows that a more direct communication be established with the person with which communication is desired.Facultad de Informátic

A systematic AQbD approach for optimization of the most influential experimental parameters on analysis of fish spoilage-related volatile amines

    Get PDF
The volatile amines trimethylamine (TMA) and dimethylamine (DMA) could be used as important spoilage indices for seafood products, assisting in the determination of the rejection period. In the present study, a systematic analytical duality-by-design (AQbD) approach was used as a powerful strategy to optimize the most important experimental parameters of headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) conditions for the quantification of TMA and DMA in Sparus aurata. This optimization enabled the selection of the best points in the method operable design region for HS-SPME extraction (30 min; 35 ◦C; NaOH 15 M and NaCl 35%, w/v) and GC-MS analysis (80 ◦C; gradient 50 ◦C/min; flow rate 1 mL/min and splitless mode). The rejection day, estimated through the TMA concentration (>12 mg/100 g, at days 9–10), was compared with sensory (quality index method: day 7–8), physical (Torrymeter: day 8–9), and microbial (day 9–10) analysis, corroborating the suitability of the proposed approach for estimating the period for which they will retain an acceptable level of eating quality from a safety and sensory perspective.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
