Using Formative Research and Audience-Centric Intelligence to Develop the #JustBe Digital Magazine: An mHealth Strategy to Improve Adolescent Sexual Health

Digital strategies may help to overcome challenges in providing contraception education to overlooked and key sub-populations (older teens, ethnic minority youth, LGBTQ youth, high school dropouts and males). However, many current digital strategies are not culturally specific and often have limited information on the most effective contraceptive methods. In this article, we describe the preliminary steps used to develop #JustBe, a user-centered digital strategy for ethnic minority older youth and young adults with a specific focus contraception, sexual health, consent, and healthy relationships. Technology-based strategies such as #JustBe offer advantages over traditional face-to-face methods by utilizing a confidential way to retrieve sexual health information that may be sensitive and potentially embarrassing. Questions still remain regarding the feasibility and long-term effects of mobile health interventions for contraception use

Microorganism response to stressed terrestrial environments: a raman spectroscopic perspective of extremophilic life strategies

Raman spectroscopy is a valuable analytical technique for the identification of biomolecules and minerals in natural samples, which involves little or minimal sample manipulation. In this paper, we evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of this technique applied to the study of extremophiles. Furthermore, we provide a review of the results published, up to the present point in time, of the bio- and geo-strategies adopted by different types of extremophile colonies of microorganisms. We also show the characteristic Raman signatures for the identification of pigments and minerals, which appear in those complex sample

Emergence of macroscopic temperatures in systems that are not thermodynamical microscopically: towards a thermodynamical description of slow granular rheology

A scenario for systems with slow dynamics is characterised by stating that there are several temperatures coexisting in the sample, with a single temperature shared by all observables at each (widely separate) time-scale. In preparation for the study of granular rheology, we show within this framework that glassy systems with driving and friction that are generic and do not correspond to a thermal bath --- and whose microscopic `fast' motion is hence not thermal --- have a well-defined macroscopic temperature associated to the slow degrees of freedom. This temperature is what a thermometer coupled to the system will measure if tuned to respond to low frequencies, and since it can be related to the number of stationary configurations, it is the formalisation of Edwards' `compactivity' ideas.Comment: Revised version: treatment of `tapping' deferre
