Same-sex marriage in Argentina : Tolerance and discrimination in political culture

    Get PDF
The fact of Argentina being one of the first countries to legalize gay marriage has been studied all over the world. A not-so-mentioned cause is that, according to survey data, discriminatory attitudes towards homosexual people decreased noticeable in Argentina since the restoration of democracy in 1983. The evolution of these attitudes, considered as a key indicator of the value of tolerance in any society, suggests that at least some central components of political culture may change as a product of democratic exercise and not only of economic modernization. The article also revises the attitudes towards people suffering from AIDS and people with criminal records.Facultad de Periodismo y Comunicación Socia

An Improved Method for Obtaining Small Pressed Powder Pellets for the Analysis by XRF

    Get PDF
A rapid, very low cost of instrumentation and simple approach to specimen preparation for the analysis by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry is presented. This technique requires a few mg of powdered samples, which are compressed to produce pellets. This procedure is employed for determining major, minor and trace elements in muscovites and K-feldspars. Factors affecting measured intensities, such as particle size and distribution, surface texture, pelletizing pressure, etc, are considered. A description of the new sample preparation device, including technical characteristics, is also given. It is demonstrated that suitable specimen presentation to the X-ray beam is obtained by using our procedure.Fil: D`angelo, José Alejandro. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. IEEE1451 standard in wireless sensor networks using TinyOS message abstractions

    Get PDF
This poster describes the IEEE1451 message structure of some commands and transactions using the TinyOS basic network abstractions. The network is composed by one base station namely Network Capable Application Processor (NCAP) and several Wireless Transducer interface Modules (WTIMs). The messages are transmitted between the NCAP and each WTIM. We propose the use of the general message structure IEEE1451 with ZigBee and 6loWPAN interfaces using the TinyOS packet protocols to improve the interoperability of heterogeneous smart sensor nodes. Tests are conducted to evaluate the implementation of the IEEE1451 standard and determinate the complexity of the transactions and alternative methods for energy management.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Alternative Approaches for the Numerical Simulation of Glass Structural Beams Reinforced with GFRP Laminates

    Get PDF
This paper discusses alternative numerical approaches to the analysis of the structural behaviour of glass beams reinforced with GFRP laminates adhesively bonded, which were calibrated and validated from four-point bending tests available in the literature. For this purpose, smeared crack and damaged plasticity models were used to simulate the non-linear behaviour of glass, available in FEMIX and ABAQUS finite element softwares. The interaction between the materials in the composite beams, using polyurethane or epoxy adhesives, was defined thought different strategies. In all cases it was possible to simulate well the non-linear behaviour of glass-GFRP composite beams. However, while the FEMIX (smeared crack model) results showed greater resemblance to the experimental ones, ABAQUS models, showed to be able to capture in greater detail the effects of cracking in theses structural responses

Generations and life worlds: the case of Braga in Portugal

    Get PDF
The objective of this research is to present the primary results of a study on generations and generational relationships in Braga, Portugal, specifically in the spheres of family, school, work, leisure and consumption, and religion. For this purpose, three generational cohorts were differentiated, belonging to those born in the decades 1940–1950, 1965–1975, and 1990–2000. This work will focus on the first of these generations, 1940–1950. To carry out this research, each generation was structured based on gender and social class, and qualitative (Life Stories) and quantitative (questionnaires) techniques were used. We started from the hypotheses suggested by previous research (blinded for review) and confirmed by the one being developed that it is possible to observe certain generational connections, despite the divisions related to gender and social class that exist within them (a division that gains greater visibility in the qualitative dimension), and that relationships between generations cannot be approached from theoretical models based on mere reproduction or opposition. Instead, we must grasp these relationships through more complex and dynamic processes, through which they will reconfigure and rework what is transmitted and what is received by each generation, resulting in a unique outcome that will be explored in this work. The religious dimension, which was previously a naturally assumed and lived tradition, ceased to be recognised as an identity determinant by the younger generations. As a result, the cultural heritage is no longer passed down as tradition. In this sense, there is a whole “integral ecology” (LS 159), in its broadest sense, recovering that is capable of cementing principles and values that unite generations and give meaning to life. To carry out this research, a theoretical and analytical framework has been established based on the following dimensions: transmissions (concerning the narratives and the people who appear as their referents); temporalities that articulate both the relationships within each generation and between generations; spaces, structures, and rituals that make up and give meaning to the transmissions; recognised debts, obligations, and interdependencies; expectations and achievements; and tensions between the expected and the achieved.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The abundance discrepancy in ionized nebulae: which are the correct abundances?

Ionized nebulae are key to understanding the chemical composition and evolution of the Universe. Among these nebulae, H~{\sc ii} regions and planetary nebulae are particularly important as they provide insights into the present and past chemical composition of the interstellar medium, along with the nucleosynthetic processes involved in the chemical evolution of the gas. However, the heavy-element abundances derived from collisional excited lines (CELs) and recombination lines (RLs) do not align. This longstanding abundance-discrepancy problem calls into question our absolute abundance determinations. Which of the lines (if any) provides the correct heavy-element abundances? Recently, it has been shown that there are temperature inhomogeneities concentrated within the highly ionized gas of the H~{\sc ii} regions, causing the reported discrepancy. However, planetary nebulae do not exhibit the same trends as the H~{\sc ii} regions, suggesting a different origin for the abundance discrepancy. In this proceedings, we briefly discuss the state-of-the-art of the abundance discrepancy problem in both H~{\sc ii} regions and planetary nebulae.Comment: Submitted to the Proceedings of IAU Symposium 384: Planetary Nebulae: a Universal Toolbox in the Era of Precision Astrophysics. Tracing the geographical origin of Argentinean lemon juices based on trace element profiles using advanced chemometric techniques

    Get PDF
This study examines the application of chemometric techniques associated with trace element concentrations for origin evaluation of lemon juice samples. Seventy-four lemon juice samples from three different provinces of Argentina were evaluated according to their microelement contents to identify differences in patterns of elements in the three provinces. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used for the determination of twenty-five elements (Ag, Al, As, Ba, Bi, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ga, In, La, Li, Mn, Mo, Ni, Rb, Sb, Sc, Se, Sn, Sr, Tl, V, and Zn). Once the analytical data were collected, supervised pattern recognition techniques were applied to construct classification/discrimination rules to predict the origin of samples on the basis of their profiles of trace elements. Namely, linear discriminant analysis (LDA), partial least square discriminant analysis (PLS-DA), k-nearest neighbors (k-NN), random forest (RF), and support vector machine with radial basis function Kernel (SVM). The results indicated that it was feasible to attribute unknown lemon juice samples to its geographical origin. SVM had better performance compared to RF, k-NN, LDA and PLS-DA, listed in descending order. Eventually, this study verifies that trace element pattern is a powerful geographical indicator when identifying the origin of lemon juice samples by analyzing trace element data with the help of SVM technique. This level of accuracy provides an interesting foundation to propose the combination of trace element contents with SVM technique as a valuable tool to evaluate the geographical origin of lemon juice samples produced in Argentina.Fil: Gaiad, José Emilio. Encuestas, democracia y políticas públicas

    Get PDF
