    Adenoid bacterial colonization in a paediatric population

    Adenoids play a key role in both respiratory and ear infection in children. It has also been shown that adenoidectomy improves these symptoms in this population. The main goal of the present study was to evaluate adenoid bacterial colonization and document a possible relation with infectious respiratory disease. A prospective observational study was designed to evaluate the proposed hypothesis in a paediatric population submitted to adenoidectomy by either infectious or non-infectious indications and compare these two cohorts. A total of 62 patients with ages ranging from 1 to 12 years old were enrolled in the study. Adenoid surface, adenoid core and middle meatus microbiota were compared. A close association between adenoid colonization and nasal infection was found, supporting that adenoids may function as bacterial reservoir for upper airway infection.     Fungal keratitis: do not lose faith

    Obejtivo: Se pretende demostrar la agresividad de la infección corneal de etiología fúngica y la necesidad de realizar múltiples y largos tratamientos tanto médicos como quirúrgicos, para evitar la pérdida del globo ocular. Métodos: Para ello, se presenta un caso clínico de queratitis fúngica en una mujer de 40 años. El cuadro cursa de forma muy agresiva causando la rápida desestructuración del segmento anterior del ojo y la pérdida casi total de agudeza visual. A pesar del tratamiento médico intensivo con antifúngicos tópicos, sistémicos e intraoculares durante tres meses, no se logró frenar la infección, siendo necesaria la realización de dos trasplantes corneales con cirugía de catarata y glaucoma asociadas. Resultados: Después de más de dos años de tratamiento médico-quirúrgico y estrecho seguimiento, se ha conseguido la remisión completa de la enfermedad, el mantenimiento de la estética y funcionalidad del globo ocular con recuperación del 100% de la agudeza visual.Purpose: This article aimed to demonstrate the aggressiveness of fungal keratitis and the need to perform multiple and long medical-surgical treatments in order to avoid eyeball´s loss. Methods: We report the case of a 40-year-old woman with fungal keratitis. The infection acts very aggressively, causing the rapid destruction of the anterior segment of the eye and the almost total loss of visual acuity. Despite the intensive medical treatment with topical, systemic and intraocular antifungal agents for three months, the infection was not stopped and It was necessary to perform two corneal transplants with associated cataract and glaucoma surgery. Results: After more than two years of medical-surgical treatment and close monitoring, complete remission of the disease, maintenance of aesthetics and eye’s functionality has been achieved with a 100% recovery of visual acuity

    A20 critically controls microglia activation and inhibits inflammasome-dependent neuroinflammation

    Microglia, the mononuclear phagocytes of the central nervous system (CNS), are important for the maintenance of CNS homeostasis, but also critically contribute to CNS pathology. Here we demonstrate that the nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kappa B) regulatory protein A20 is crucial in regulating microglia activation during CNS homeostasis and pathology. In mice, deletion of A20 in microglia increases microglial cell number and affects microglial regulation of neuronal synaptic function. Administration of a sublethal dose of lipopolysaccharide induces massive microglia activation, neuroinflammation, and lethality in mice with microgliaconfined A20 deficiency. Microglia A20 deficiency also exacerbates multiple sclerosis (MS) like disease, due to hyperactivation of the NIrp3 inflammasome leading to enhanced interleukin-113 secretion and CNS inflammation. Finally, we confirm a NIrp3 inflammasome signature and IL-1 beta expression in brain and cerebrospinal fluid from MS patients. Collectively, these data reveal a critical role for A20 in the control of microglia activation and neuroinflammation

    Topical insulin modulates inflammatory and proliferative phases of burn-wound healing in diabetes-induced rats

    The healing time of burn wounds depends on surface area and depth of the burn and associated comorbidities. Diabetes mellitus (DM) causes delays in the healing process by extending the inflammatory phase. Treatment with topical insulin can improve the inflammatory phase, restore metabolic dysregulation, and modulate impaired cellular signaling in burn wounds. The objective of this study was to evaluate markers of the inflammatory and proliferative phases of second-degree burns after topical insulin treatment in diabetic rats. Type I DM was induced with streptozotocin in male Wistar rats. The animals' backs were shaved and subjected to thermal burning. Rats were randomized into two groups: control diabetic (DC) and insulin diabetic (DI). At Days 7 and 14 postburn, rats were euthanized, and wound-tissue sections were evaluated by hematoxylin and eosin, Weigert, and Verhoeff staining, immunohistochemistry-paraffin, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. A significant increase in reepithelialization was seen on Days 7 and 14 in DI versus DC rats. On Day 7, interleukin (IL)-1 beta, IL-6, monocyte chemotactic protein (MCP)-1, and F4/80 expression were increased in DI versus DC rats. On Day 14, MCP-1 expression was decreased and F4/80 increased in DI versus DC rats. On Days 7 and 14, Ki-67, transforming growth factor-beta 1, vascular endothelial growth factor expression, and formation of elastic fibers were increased in DI versus DC rats.     NEOTROPICAL CARNIVORES: a data set on carnivore distribution in the Neotropics

    Mammalian carnivores are considered a key group in maintaining ecological health and can indicate potential ecological integrity in landscapes where they occur. Carnivores also hold high conservation value and their habitat requirements can guide management and conservation plans. The order Carnivora has 84 species from 8 families in the Neotropical region: Canidae; Felidae; Mephitidae; Mustelidae; Otariidae; Phocidae; Procyonidae; and Ursidae. Herein, we include published and unpublished data on native terrestrial Neotropical carnivores (Canidae; Felidae; Mephitidae; Mustelidae; Procyonidae; and Ursidae). NEOTROPICAL CARNIVORES is a publicly available data set that includes 99,605 data entries from 35,511 unique georeferenced coordinates. Detection/non-detection and quantitative data were obtained from 1818 to 2018 by researchers, governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations, and private consultants. Data were collected using several methods including camera trapping, museum collections, roadkill, line transect, and opportunistic records. Literature (peer-reviewed and grey literature) from Portuguese, Spanish and English were incorporated in this compilation. Most of the data set consists of detection data entries (n = 79,343; 79.7%) but also includes non-detection data (n = 20,262; 20.3%). Of those, 43.3% also include count data (n = 43,151). The information available in NEOTROPICAL CARNIVORES will contribute to macroecological, ecological, and conservation questions in multiple spatio-temporal perspectives. As carnivores play key roles in trophic interactions, a better understanding of their distribution and habitat requirements are essential to establish conservation management plans and safeguard the future ecological health of Neotropical ecosystems. Our data paper, combined with other large-scale data sets, has great potential to clarify species distribution and related ecological processes within the Neotropics. There are no copyright restrictions and no restriction for using data from this data paper, as long as the data paper is cited as the source of the information used.
