Rare External Jugular Vein Pseudoaneurysm

External jugular vein pseudoaneurysm is a very rare cause of a neck mass due to the low pressure venous system. This case demonstrates a 27-year-old female who presented to the emergency department with a non-tender, compressible, left-sided neck mass that enlarged with valsalva and talking, and intermittent paresthesias. Upon workup, she was diagnosed with an external jugular vein pseudoaneurysm. Complications of this diagnosis are mentioned in the literature; however, most patients with an external jugular vein pseudoaneurysm or aneurysm can be safely discharged with close follow-up with a vascular surgeon

A course on digital electronics based on solving design-oriented exercises by means of a PBL strategy

Recently, new syllabuses are being implemented accordingly to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) in Spain. This paper describes the methodology and assessment strategy applied in the subject ‘‘Digital Circuits and Systems’’ (CSD) in the third semester course in the Telecommunications Engineering degree at the Castelldefels School of Telecommunications and Aerospace Engineering (EETAC) of the Universitat Polite`cnica de Catalunya (UPC). The course’s main learning objective is that students be able to analyse and design simple combinational and sequential circuits by means of hardware description languages for programmable devices and program applications using microcontrollers and C language. Small groups of two or three students work in cooperation using PBL techniques to solve design-oriented assignments, while instructors act more as mediators than lecturers in order to facilitate project development and knowledge acquisition. The experience we describe corresponds to the spring term of 2011, a period in which this methodology was applied to 46 students. This work compares statistically the influence of the students’ background on their academic performance in our subject. A significant correlation has been detected between test marks and the final grade, based on continuous assessment. Students’ opinions have been obtained by means of a survey at the end of the course. Although the high workload and involvement, because this methodology requires constancy and commitment from the students, most of them have positive opinions on the development of the subject, due to the fact that they realise that they have put into practice several competences or cross-curricular skills, while acquiring the course content, and furthermore, most of them have passed the course, even with higher grades than the ones from other subjects in the same semester.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Time-resolved Raman spectroscopy for in situ planetary mineralogy

Planetary mineralogy can be revealed through a variety of remote sensing and in situ investigations that precede any plans for eventual sample return. We briefly review those techniques and focus on the capabilities for on-surface in situ examination of Mars, Venus, the Moon, asteroids, and other bodies. Over the past decade, Raman spectroscopy has continued to develop as a prime candidate for the next generation of in situ planetary instruments, as it provides definitive structural and compositional information of minerals in their natural geological context. Traditional continuous-wave Raman spectroscopy using a green laser suffers from fluorescence interference, which can be large (sometimes saturating the detector), particularly in altered minerals, which are of the greatest geophysical interest. Taking advantage of the fact that fluorescence occurs at a later time than the instantaneous Raman signal, we have developed a time-resolved Raman spectrometer that uses a streak camera and pulsed miniature microchip laser to provide picosecond time resolution. Our ability to observe the complete time evolution of Raman and fluorescence spectra in minerals makes this technique ideal for exploration of diverse planetary environments, some of which are expected to contain strong, if not overwhelming, fluorescence signatures. We discuss performance capability and present time-resolved pulsed Raman spectra collected from several highly fluorescent and Mars-relevant minerals. In particular, we have found that conventional Raman spectra from fine grained clays, sulfates, and phosphates exhibited large fluorescent signatures, but high quality spectra could be obtained using our time-resolved approach

The use of vacuum-assisted wound closure to enhance skin graft acceptance in a horse

A 16-year-old horse was admitted to the clinic of the Department of Surgery and Anesthesiology of Domestic Animals of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (Ghent University) for the treatment of a very large, non-healing wound extending over the dorsomedial and dorsolateral aspects of the left metatarsus. Surgical debridement of exuberant granulation tissue and new bone was performed under general anesthesia, followed by standard wound care under a bandage. Once a new bed of healthy granulation had formed, skin grafting was performed using the punch graft method. Due to the presence of a significant amount of wound exudate, cast immobilization was considered to be contraindicated. Instead, vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) therapy was used as a method of securing the skin grafts to the wound bed during the first days post-operatively. After five days of VAC therapy, the wound dressing was removed and an acceptance of nearly 100% of the punch grafts was observed. Complete epithelialization of the wound was evident 42 days after skin grafting. Imagen-momia e imagen-ruina: La mise-en-film de las fotografías de los desaparecidos en el documental subjetivo de la posdictadura argentina / Image-mummy and image-ruin. Mise-en-film of missing people photographies in the subjetive documentary

En este artículo se analizan los diversos vínculos entre imagen fotográfica e imagen cinematográfica en los documentales subjetivos de la posdictadura argentina: Papá Iván (Roqué, 2000), Los rubios (Carri 2003), Encontrando a Víctor (Bruschtein, 2004), y M (Prividera, 2007). Se pone particular atención en las recurrentes escenas en las que los directores y entrevistados observan, comentan a interactúan con fotografías de los desaparecidos de la última dictadura militar (1976-1983). ¿En qué medida las filmaciones de las fotos ligadas al pasado argentino reciente modifican y construyen sus sentidos? ¿Refuerzan estas películas el valor de verdad de las fotografías al insertar un documento en otro y tratarlas en su carácter de prueba referencial o, por el contrario, multiplican las mediaciones y alejan aún más el referente de su signo? En suma, ¿qué ganan y qué pierden estas imágenes, en su mayoría extraídas del álbum familiar de los ausentes, al ser expuestas públicamente frente a la cámara de cine?This article analyzes the links between the photographic image and the cinematographic image in the subjective documentaries of the post-dictatorship period in Argentina: Papá Iván (Roqué, 2000), Los rubios (Carri 2003), Encontrando a Víctor (Bruschtein, 2004), and M (Prividera, 2007). The article focuses particularly on the numerous scenes in which the directors and the interviewees observe, comment, and interact with the photographs of the disappeared during the 1976-1983 dictatorship. To what extent does the filming of these photographs related to the Argentine past modify and construct the meanings of such images? Do these films reinforce the ‘value of truth’ of the photographs by inserting one document into another one and by treating them as referential proof of what has happened in the past? Or, on the contrary, do these films multiply the mediations and make the distance between the images and their referent even greater? In sum, what do these photographs, mostly taken from family albums, gain and what do they lose when they are put on public display in film
