Evaluation of Two Methods for Incorporating a Systematic Uncertainty into a Test of the Background-only Hypothesis for a Poisson Process

Hypothesis tests for the presence of new sources of Poisson counts amidst background processes are frequently performed in high energy physics, gamma ray astronomy, and other branches of science. This talk brie y summarizes work in which we evaluate two classes of algorithms for dealing with uncertainty in the mean background in such tests

Supporting Students in Inclusive Settings

Inclusion provides students in special education the opportunity to learn alongside their same-aged peers to the greatest extent that is appropriate. Although many special education students are included in general education classrooms, it is common that teachers do not practice asset-based approaches during instruction. Understanding and recognizing student strengths will help educators organize teaching strategies to equip students with the skills to identify what they learn well and what areas they have challenges in. It is crucial for teachers to provide meaningful learning opportunities that allow students to use their assets throughout the learning process. It is important for teachers to provide lessons that aim to maximize student strengths by focusing on their positive traits. Using funds of knowledge and strengths-based teaching practices will help teachers advance student strengths and academics with appropriate classroom supports. Strengths-based learning is a solution that will positively affect student motivation, self-confidence, and enjoyment of learning. Additionally, using funds of knowledge is an approach to asset-based instruction, and this teaching practice will encourage students to feel connected to their learning. Strengths-based learning encourages teachers to appreciate student strengths and passions instead of focusing on the disability and impairment. When students apply their strengths and interests to their learning, they will succeed autonomously. When students are given the freedom to be their authentic selves while learning, they view their education as meaningful and will experience deeper understanding throughout the learning process. Teachers are more likely to maintain high expectations for these students and execute a curriculum that maintains rigorous expectations when they are prepared and given the tools to support students in special educatio

Enumeration by kernel positions for strongly Bernoulli type truncation games on words

We find the winning strategy for a class of truncation games played on words. As a consequence of the present author's recent results on some of these games we obtain new formulas for Bernoulli numbers and polynomials of the second kind and a new combinatorial model for the number of connected permutations of given rank. For connected permutations, the decomposition used to find the winning strategy is shown to be bijectively equivalent to King's decomposition, used to recursively generate a transposition Gray code of the connected permutations

A Simplified and Practical Surgical Treatment for Medial Ectropion: A Case Report

We present the case of a 81-year-old patient with right facial palsy suffering from recurrent medial ectropion with lower lateral dislocation of the lacrimal punctum causing epiphora and photophobia. The patient was first treated for ectropion with lateral tarsal strip procedure. Unfortunately, this surgical procedure did not get the expected result. This was the reason we used the Mitek anchor system to fix the lower lateral dislocation of the punctum. We had no recurrence of symptoms during a follow-up period of 18 months

Medicines prescribed for asthma, discontinuation and perinatal outcomes, including breastfeeding: A population cohort analysis

ObjectivesTo explore associations between exposures to medicines prescribed for asthma and their discontinuation in pregnancy and preterm birth [MethodsDesign. A population-based cohort study. Setting. The Secure Anonymised Information Linkage [SAIL] databank in Wales, linking maternal primary care data with infant outcomes. Population. 107,573, 105,331, and 38,725 infants born 2000-2010 with information on premature birth, SGA and breastfeeding respectively, after exclusions. Exposures. maternal prescriptions for asthma medicines or their discontinuation in pregnancy. Methods. Odds ratios for adverse pregnancy outcomes were calculated for the exposed versus the unexposed population, adjusted for smoking, parity, age and socio-economic status.ResultsPrescriptions for asthma, whether continued or discontinued during pregnancy, were associated with birth atConclusionsPrescription of asthma medicines before or during pregnancy was associated with higher prevalence of adverse perinatal outcomes, particularly if prescriptions were discontinued during pregnancy.
