Wave scattering from self-affine surfaces
Electromagnetic wave scattering from a perfectly reflecting self-affine
surface is considered. Within the framework of the Kirchhoff approximation, we
show that the scattering cross section can be exactly written as a function of
the scattering angle via a centered symmetric Levy distribution for general
roughness amplitude, Hurst exponent and wavelength of the incident wave. The
amplitude of the specular peak, its width and its position are discussed as
well as the power law decrease (with scattering angle) of the scattering cross
section.Comment: RevTeX, 4 pages including 2 figures. Submitted Phys. Rev. Let
Ergodic properties of a generic non-integrable quantum many-body system in thermodynamic limit
We study a generic but simple non-integrable quantum {\em many-body} system
of {\em locally} interacting particles, namely a kicked model of spinless
fermions on 1-dim lattice (equivalent to a kicked Heisenberg XX-Z chain of 1/2
spins). Statistical properties of dynamics (quantum ergodicity and quantum
mixing) and the nature of quantum transport in {\em thermodynamic limit} are
considered as the kick parameters (which control the degree of
non-integrability) are varied. We find and demonstrate {\em ballistic}
transport and non-ergodic, non-mixing dynamics (implying infinite conductivity
at all temperatures) in the {\em integrable} regime of zero or very small kick
parameters, and more generally and important, also in {\em non-integrable}
regime of {\em intermediate} values of kicked parameters, whereas only for
sufficiently large kick parameters we recover quantum ergodicity and mixing
implying normal (diffusive) transport. We propose an order parameter (charge
stiffness ) which controls the phase transition from non-mixing/non-ergodic
dynamics (ordered phase, ) to mixing/ergodic dynamics (disordered phase,
D=0) in the thermodynamic limit. Furthermore, we find {\em exponential decay of
time-correlation function} in the regime of mixing dynamics.
The results are obtained consistently within three different numerical and
analytical approaches: (i) time evolution of a finite system and direct
computation of time correlation functions, (ii) full diagonalization of finite
systems and statistical analysis of stationary data, and (iii) algebraic
construction of quantum invariants of motion of an infinite system, in
particular the time averaged observables.Comment: 18 pages in REVTeX with 14 eps figures included, Submitted to

The challenges of intersectionality: Researching difference in physical education
Researching the intersection of class, race, gender, sexuality and disability raises many issues for educational research. Indeed, Maynard (2002, 33) has recently argued that ‘difference is one of the most significant, yet unresolved, issues for feminist and social thinking at the beginning of the twentieth century’. This paper reviews some of the key imperatives of working with ‘intersectional theory’ and explores the extent to these debates are informing research around difference in education and Physical Education (PE). The first part of the paper highlights some key issues in theorising and researching intersectionality before moving on to consider how difference has been addressed within PE. The paper then considers three ongoing challenges of intersectionality – bodies and embodiment, politics and practice and empirical research. The paper argues for a continued focus on the specific context of PE within education for its contribution to these questions
The Hahn Quantum Variational Calculus
We introduce the Hahn quantum variational calculus. Necessary and sufficient
optimality conditions for the basic, isoperimetric, and Hahn quantum Lagrange
problems, are studied. We also show the validity of Leitmann's direct method
for the Hahn quantum variational calculus, and give explicit solutions to some
concrete problems. To illustrate the results, we provide several examples and
discuss a quantum version of the well known Ramsey model of economics.Comment: Submitted: 3/March/2010; 4th revision: 9/June/2010; accepted:

Quantum mechanics: Myths and facts
A common understanding of quantum mechanics (QM) among students and practical
users is often plagued by a number of "myths", that is, widely accepted claims
on which there is not really a general consensus among experts in foundations
of QM. These myths include wave-particle duality, time-energy uncertainty
relation, fundamental randomness, the absence of measurement-independent
reality, locality of QM, nonlocality of QM, the existence of well-defined
relativistic QM, the claims that quantum field theory (QFT) solves the problems
of relativistic QM or that QFT is a theory of particles, as well as myths on
black-hole entropy. The fact is that the existence of various theoretical and
interpretational ambiguities underlying these myths does not yet allow us to
accept them as proven facts. I review the main arguments and counterarguments
lying behind these myths and conclude that QM is still a
not-yet-completely-understood theory open to further fundamental research.Comment: 51 pages, pedagogic review, revised, new references, to appear in

Equine infectious anemia : prevalence in working equids of livestock herds, in Minas Gerais, Brazil
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThe prevalence and spatial distribution of equine infectious anemia (EIA) were estimated in livestock herds where equids were used as draft power and for transportation in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Serum samples were collected from September/2003 to March/2004 in 853 municipalities of the state. The sample comprised 6,540 equids from 1,940 herds. Two laboratorial tests were performed in sequence: ELISA using a recombinant gp90 protein, following by the AGID. The prevalence in the herds was estimated in 5.3% [CI = 4.3 to 6.3%], and 3.1% [CI = 2.2 to 3.9%] of the animals tested were positive. Minas Gerais was considered an endemic region for EIA. The highest prevalence for herds and animals was found in North/Northwest region (strata) followed by Vale do Mucuri/Jequitinhonha region
Recent experimental results in sub- and near-barrier heavy ion fusion reactions
Recent advances obtained in the field of near and sub-barrier heavy-ion
fusion reactions are reviewed. Emphasis is given to the results obtained in the
last decade, and focus will be mainly on the experimental work performed
concerning the influence of transfer channels on fusion cross sections and the
hindrance phenomenon far below the barrier. Indeed, early data of sub-barrier
fusion taught us that cross sections may strongly depend on the low-energy
collective modes of the colliding nuclei, and, possibly, on couplings to
transfer channels. The coupled-channels (CC) model has been quite successful in
the interpretation of the experimental evidences. Fusion barrier distributions
often yield the fingerprint of the relevant coupled channels. Recent results
obtained by using radioactive beams are reported. At deep sub-barrier energies,
the slope of the excitation function in a semi-logarithmic plot keeps
increasing in many cases and standard CC calculations over-predict the cross
sections. This was named a hindrance phenomenon, and its physical origin is
still a matter of debate. Recent theoretical developments suggest that this
effect, at least partially, may be a consequence of the Pauli exclusion
principle. The hindrance may have far-reaching consequences in astrophysics
where fusion of light systems determines stellar evolution during the carbon
and oxygen burning stages, and yields important information for exotic
reactions that take place in the inner crust of accreting neutron stars.Comment: 40 pages, 63 figures, review paper accepted for EPJ
Nos experimentos de eficiência de controle de plantas daninhas foram testados: imazamox (20, 30 e 40 g i.a./ha), bentazon (480 g i.a./ha), fomesafen (125 e 250 g i.a./ha), imazamox + bentazon (30+480 g i.a./ha), imazamox + fomesafen (30 + 125 g i.a./ha), bentazon / imazamox (480/30 g i.a/ha, aplicação seqüencial), fomesafen/imazmox (125/30 g i.a./ha, aplicação seqüencial), fomesafen/fomesafen (100/100 g i.a./ha, aplicação seqüencial) e testemunha.
