    WHAT’S WITH ALL THE “HYPE?”: RACIAL DISCRIMINATION, RACIAL IDENTITY, RACIAL SOCIALIZATION, AND HYPERMASCULINITY AMONG AFRICAN AMERICAN ADOLESCENT MALES

    Experiences tied to individual and institutional racism have a long and persistent history of impacting the livelihood of African American people. Some theorists and researchers have argued that African American males have adopted masculine identities that emerged as coping responses to their experiences with racism and oppression (Cunningham, Swanson, & Hayes, 2013; Franklin, 2004; Majors & Bilson, 1992; Spencer, 1995). Younger males, are increasingly demonstrating an exaggerated form of masculinity (hypermasculinity) in response to their environments, particularly those in urban communities, as a coping response (Spencer, Fegley, Harpalani, & Seaton, 2004). The degree to which racial discrimination is related to hypermasculinity is not fully understood. Previous research has demonstrated that strong racial identity and some dimensions of racial socialization can be helpful in mitigating the negative impact of distress related to racial discrimination. In the current study I used Spencer’s (1995) Phenomenological Variant of Ecological Systems Theory (PVEST) to examine the relationships among racial discrimination distress, racial identity, racial socialization, and dimensions of hypermasculinity among a sample of 156 African American, male adolescents from predominantly low-income backgrounds. Multiple regression analyses were used to examine the relationships among these variables. Results revealed statistically significant relationships among some dimensions of racial identity, racial socialization, and hypermasculinity. No statistically significant relationships emerged between racial discrimination distress and dimensions of hypermasculinity. Implications for these findings are discussed

    Cortisol levels are positively associated with pup-feeding rates in male meerkats

    In societies of cooperative vertebrates, individual differences in contributions to offspring care are commonly substantial. Recent attempts to explain the causes of this variation have focused on correlations between contributions to care and the protein hormone prolactin, or the steroid hormone testosterone. However, such studies have seldom considered the importance of other hormones or controlled for non-hormonal factors that are correlative with both individual hormone levels and contributions to care. Using multivariate statistics, we show that hormone levels explain significant variation in contributions to pup-feeding by male meerkats, even after controlling for non-hormonal effects. However, long-term contributions to pup provisioning were significantly and positively correlated with plasma levels of cortisol rather than prolactin, while plasma levels of testosterone were not related to individual patterns of pup-feeding. Furthermore, a playback experiment that used pup begging calls to increase the feeding rates of male helpers gave rise to parallel increases in plasma cortisol levels, whilst prolactin and testosterone levels remained unchanged. Our findings confirm that hormones can explain significant amounts of variation in contributions to offspring feeding, and that cortisol, not prolactin, is the hormone most strongly associated with pup-feeding in cooperative male meerkats

    Negative capacitance and instability at electrified interfaces: Lessons from the study of membrane capacitors

    Various models leading to predictions of negative capacitance, C, are briefly reviewed. Their relation to the nature of electric control is discussed. We reconfirm that the calculated double layer capacitance can be negative under σ-control – an artificial construct that requires uniform distribution of the electrode surface charge density, σ. However, only the total charge q (or the average surface charge density σ) can be experimentally fixed in isolated cell studies (q-control). For those σ where C becomes negative under σ-control, the transition to q-control (i.e. relaxing the lateral change density distribution, fixing its mean value to σ) leads to instability of the uniform distribution and a transition to a non-uniform phase. As an illustration, a “membrane capacitor” model is discussed. This exactly solvable model, allowing for both uniform and inhomogeneous relaxation of the electrical double layer, helps to demonstrate both the onset and some important features of the instability.     Quaternionic and Octonionic Spinors. A Classification

    Quaternionic and octonionic realizations of Clifford algebras and spinors are classified and explicitly constructed in terms of recursive formulas. The most general free dynamics in arbitrary signature space-times for both quaternionic and octonionic spinors is presented. In the octonionic case we further provide a systematic list of results and tables expressing, e.g., the relations of the octonionic Clifford algebras with the G2G_2 cosets over the Lorentz algebras, the identities satisfied by the higher-rank antisymmetric octonionic tensors and so on. Applications of these results range from the classification of octonionic generalized supersymmetries, the construction of octonionic superstrings, as well as the investigations concerning the recently discovered octonionic MM-superalgebra and its superconformal extension.Comment: 24 pages, LaTe

    Making Almost Commuting Matrices Commute

    Suppose two Hermitian matrices A,BA,B almost commute ([A,B]δ\Vert [A,B] \Vert \leq \delta). Are they close to a commuting pair of Hermitian matrices, A,BA',B', with AA,BBϵ\Vert A-A' \Vert,\Vert B-B'\Vert \leq \epsilon? A theorem of H. Lin shows that this is uniformly true, in that for every ϵ>0\epsilon>0 there exists a δ>0\delta>0, independent of the size NN of the matrices, for which almost commuting implies being close to a commuting pair. However, this theorem does not specify how δ\delta depends on ϵ\epsilon. We give uniform bounds relating δ\delta and ϵ\epsilon. We provide tighter bounds in the case of block tridiagonal and tridiagonal matrices and a fully constructive method in that case. Within the context of quantum measurement, this implies an algorithm to construct a basis in which we can make a {\it projective} measurement that approximately measures two approximately commuting operators simultaneously.     Exclusive breastfeeding and its effect on growth of Malawian infants: results from a cross-sectional study

    Abstract Background: For the optimal nutrition of children under 2 years of age, it is considered important that they be exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months before being given complementary food. Aims and Objectives: A cross-sectional nutritional baseline survey was undertaken in 2011 in the Kasungu and Mzimba Districts of Malawi to assess the nutritional status of children under 2 years of age and its determinants in order to prepare a nutrition education intervention programme. The intention of this study was to assess the nutritional status of infants aged 0–<6 months with regard to food intake. Methods: Interviews were conducted on randomly selected families with children under 2 years; anthropometric measurements were obtained from mothers and their children. Only infants between 0 and <6 months were selected for analysis (n  =  196). An ANCOVA test was performed on age of the infant with mothers’ height and weight as covariates. Results: Prevalence of stunting (infants’ length-for-age Z-score (LAZ) <−2SD) was 39%, wasting (WLZ <−2SD) 2%, and underweight (WAZ <−2SD) 13%. Of the infants under 6 months, 43% were exclusively breastfed. Predominant breastfeeding and mixed breastfeeding were less common (21% and 36%, respectively). The ANCOVA confirmed the association between exclusive breastfeeding and LAZ and WAZ: exclusively breastfed infants had a higher mean (SE) LAZ (−1·13, 0·12) and WAZ (−0·41, 0·13) than infants not being exclusively breastfed (−1·59, 0·11, and −0·97, 0·11, respectively). There was no overall significant association between breastfeeding practice and WLZ. Conclusion: Exclusive breastfeeding of infants under 6 months is associated with higher mean LAZ and WAZ. Promotion of exclusive breastfeeding in low-income countries is important in preventing growth retardation
