Full-potential modeling of blade-vortex interactions
A comparison is made of four different models for predicting the unsteady loading induced by a vortex passing close to an airfoil. (1) The first model approximates the vortex effect as a change in the airfoil angle of attack. (2) The second model is related to the first but, instead of imposing only a constant velocity on the airfoil, the distributed effect of the vortex is computed and used. This is analogous to a lifting surface method. (3) The third model is to specify a branch cut discontinuity in the potential field. The vortex is modeled as a jump in potential across the branch cut, the edge of which represents the center of the vortex. (4) The fourth method models the vortex expressing the potential as the sum of a known potential due to the vortex and an unknown perturbation due to the airfoil. The purpose of the current study is to investigate the four vortex models described above and to determine their relative merits and suitability for use in large three-dimensional codes
Maladaptive rumination moderates the effects of written emotional disclosure on ambulatory blood pressure levels in females.
Written emotional disclosure (WED) has beneficial effects on health outcomes. However, its effectiveness is influenced by a number of variables. This exploratory study tested whether trait rumination, which comprises brooding, a maladaptive component, and reflection, an adaptive component, moderated the effects of WED on ambulatory blood pressure (ABP) in female participants. Fifty-two participants were randomized to write about their most stressful/traumatic life experience(s) or non-emotive topics, for 20 minutes, on 3 consecutive days. Two weeks and 14 weeks later, ABP was recorded over a single day. Using hierarchical linear modelling, an effect of condition was found at 2 weeks but not at 14 weeks indicating that higher levels of ABP were observed following WED. There was also a significant condition by brooding interaction at two weeks such that higher ABP was observed in low brooders in the WED condition compared with low brooders in the control condition. However, within the WED condition, the lowest ABP was exhibited by participants high in brooding. The findings indicated that WED led to short-lived increases in ABP which disappeared in the medium term. Researchers ought to build upon this exploratory study and investigate further the potential moderating role of brooding within WED. Individual differences in brooding may account for (some of) the mixed and inconsistent findings in past WED research
CSM docked DAP/orbital assembly bending interaction-axial case
A digital autopilot which can provide attitude control for the entire Skylab orbital assembly using the service module reaction control jets is described. An important consideration is the potential interaction of the control system with the bending modes of the orbital assembly. Two aspects of this potential interaction were considered. The first was the possibility that bending induced rotations feeding back through the attitude sensor into the control system could produce an instability or self-sustained oscillation. The second was whether the jet activity commanded by the control system could produce excessive loads at any of the critical load points of the orbital assembly. Both aspects were studied by using analytic techniques and by running simulations on the all-digital simulator
The Intrinsic Shapes of Molecular Cloud Fragments over a Range of Length Scales
We decipher intrinsic three-dimensional shape distributions of molecular
clouds, cloud cores, Bok globules, and condensations using recently compiled
catalogues of observed axis ratios for these objects mapped in carbon monoxide,
ammonia, through optical selection, or in continuum dust emission. We apply
statistical techniques to compare assumed intrinsic axis ratio distributions
with observed projected axis ratio distributions. Intrinsically triaxial shapes
produce projected distributions which agree with observations. Molecular clouds
mapped in CO are intrinsically triaxial but more nearly prolate than
oblate, while the smaller cloud cores, Bok globules, and condensations are also
intrinsically triaxial but more nearly oblate than prolate.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures. Version with color figures can be found at

Snowpack ground truth: Radar test site, Steamboat Springs, Colorado, 8-16 April 1976
Ground-truth data taken at Steamboat Springs, Colorado is presented. Data taken during the period April 8, 1976 - April 16, 1976 included the following: (1) snow depths and densities at selected locations (using a Mount Rose snow tube); (2) snow pits for temperature, density, and liquid water determinations using the freezing calorimetry technique and vertical layer classification; (3) snow walls were also constructed of various cross sections and documented with respect to sizes and snow characteristics; (4) soil moisture at selected locations; and (5) appropriate air temperature and weather data

Formation and Collapse of Nonaxisymmetric Protostellar Cores in Planar Magnetic Interstellar Clouds: Formulation of the Problem and Linear Analysis
We formulate the problem of the formation and collapse of nonaxisymmetric
protostellar cores in weakly ionized, self-gravitating, magnetic molecular
clouds. In our formulation, molecular clouds are approximated as isothermal,
thin (but with finite thickness) sheets. We present the governing dynamical
equations for the multifluid system of neutral gas and ions, including
ambipolar diffusion, and also a self-consistent treatment of thermal pressure,
gravitational, and magnetic (pressure and tension) forces. The dimensionless
free parameters characterizing model clouds are discussed. The response of
cloud models to linear perturbations is also examined, with particular emphasis
on length and time scales for the growth of gravitational instability in
magnetically subcritical and supercritical clouds. We investigate their
dependence on a cloud's initial mass-to-magnetic-flux ratio (normalized to the
critical value for collapse), the dimensionless initial neutral-ion collision
time, and also the relative external pressure exerted on a model cloud. Among
our results, we find that nearly-critical model clouds have significantly
larger characteristic instability lengthscales than do more distinctly sub- or
supercritical models. Another result is that the effect of a greater external
pressure is to reduce the critical lengthscale for instability. Numerical
simulations showing the evolution of model clouds during the linear regime of
evolution are also presented, and compared to the results of the dispersion
analysis. They are found to be in agreement with the dispersion results, and
confirm the dependence of the characteristic length and time scales on
parameters such as the initial mass-to-flux ratio and relative external
