Conformal Field Theory Approach to the 2-Impurity Kondo Problem: Comparison with Numerical Renormalization Group Results
Numerical renormalization group and conformal field theory work indicate that
the two impurity Kondo Hamiltonian has a non-Fermi liquid critical point
separating the Kondo-screening phase from the inter-impurity singlet phase when
particle-hole (P-H) symmetry is maintained. We clarify the circumstances under
which this critical point occurs, pointing out that there are two types of P-H
symmetry. Only one of them guarantees the occurance of the critical point. Much
of the previous numerical work was done on models with the other type of P-H
symmetry. We analyse this critical point using the boundary conformal field
theory technique. The finite-size spectrum is presented in detail and compared
with about 50 energy levels obtained using the numerical renormalization group.
Various Green's functions, general renormalization group behaviour, and a
hidden are analysed.Comment: 38 pages, RevTex. 2 new sections clarify the circumstances under
which a model will exhibit the non-trivial critical point (hence potentially
resolving disagreements with other Authors) and explain the hidden SO(7)
symmetry of the model, relating it to an alternative approach of Sire et al.

Indirect Exchange Interaction between two Quantum Dots in an Aharonov-Bohm Ring
We investigate the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction between
two spins located at two quantum dots embedded in an Aharonov-Bohm (AB) ring.
In such a system the RKKY interaction, which oscillates as a function of the
distance between two local spins, is affected by the flux. For the case of the
ferromagnetic RKKY interaction, we find that the amplitude of AB oscillations
is enhanced by the Kondo correlations and an additional maximum appears at half
flux, where the interaction is switched off. For the case of the
antiferromagnetic RKKY interaction, we find that the phase of AB oscillations
is shifted by pi, which is attributed to the formation of a singlet state
between two spins for the flux value close to integer value of flux.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
2W/nm Peak-power All-Fiber Supercontinuum Source and its Application to the Characterization of Periodically Poled Nonlinear Crystals
We demonstrate a uniform high spectral brightness and peak power density
all-fiber supercontinuum source. The source consists of a nanosecond Ytterbium
fiber laser and an optimal length PCF producing a continuum with a peak power
density of 2 W/nm and less than 5 dB of spectral variation between 590 to 1500
nm. The Watt level per nm peak power density enables the use of such sources
for the characterization of nonlinear materials. Application of the source is
demonstrated with the characterization of several periodically poled crystals.Comment: 8 pages 4 figures v2 includes revisions to the description of the

Transport in Coupled Quantum Dots: Kondo Effect Versus Anti-Ferromagnetic Correlation
The interplay between the Kondo effect and the inter-dot magnetic interaction
in a coupled-dot system is studied. An exact result for the transport
properties at zero temperature is obtained by diagonalizing a cluster, composed
by the double-dot and its vicinity, which is connected to leads. It is shown
that the system goes continuously from the Kondo regime to an
anti-ferromagnetic state as the inter-dot interaction is increased. The
conductance, the charge at the dots and the spin-spin correlation are obtained
as a function of the gate potential.Comment: 4 pages, 3 postscript figures. Submitted to PR

Growth and persistence of 17 annual medic (Medicago spp.) accessions on clay soils in central Queensland
Seventeen accessions of annual medics were evaluated on clay soil sites at Emerald, Theodore, Biloela and Mundubbera, central Queensland. Successful medics could have a role in both permanent and ley pastures. However, these are marginal areas for medics with winter (June-August) rainfalls of 80-100 mm. The accessions were selected on the basis of results in southern Queensland, a more favoured area for medics. There were 9 accessions of Medicago truncatula (barrel medic), 4 of M. scutellata (snail medic), 2 of M. polymorpha (burr medic) and 1 each of M. aculeata (keg medic) and M. orbicularis (button medic). Lucerne (M. sativa) cv. Trifecta was sown at 3 sites. All sites except Theodore were irrigated in the year of establishment (1993). The medic seedlings at Theodore died in 1993 and the trial was resown in 1994. Measurements were made of seed set in the first year and whenever it occurred in later years, seedling density in most years and yield when there was adequate growth. Selected measurements were made of soil seed reserves. Measurements ceased in 1998
Orbital evolution of P\v{r}\'{i}bram and Neuschwanstein
The orbital evolution of the two meteorites P\v{r}\'{i}bram and
Neuschwanstein on almost identical orbits and also several thousand clones were
studied in the framework of the N-body problem for 5000 years into the past.
The meteorites moved on very similar orbits during the whole investigated
interval. We have also searched for photographic meteors and asteroids moving
on similar orbits. There were 5 meteors found in the IAU MDC database and 6
NEAs with currently similar orbits to P\v{r}\'{i}bram and Neuschwanstein.
However, only one meteor 161E1 and one asteroid 2002 QG46 had a similar orbital
evolution over the last 2000 years.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, 3 table
Enhancement of the Two-channel Kondo Effect in Single-Electron boxes
The charging of a quantum box, coupled to a lead by tunneling through a
single resonant level, is studied near the degeneracy points of the Coulomb
blockade. Combining Wilson's numerical renormalization-group method with
perturbative scaling approaches, the corresponding low-energy Hamiltonian is
solved for arbitrary temperatures, gate voltages, tunneling rates, and energies
of the impurity level. Similar to the case of a weak tunnel barrier, the shape
of the charge step is governed at low temperatures by the non-Fermi-liquid
fixed point of the two-channel Kondo effect. However, the associated Kondo
temperature TK is strongly modified. Most notably, TK is proportional to the
width of the level if the transmission through the impurity is close to unity
at the Fermi energy, and is no longer exponentially small in one over the
tunneling matrix element. Focusing on a particle-hole symmetric level, the
two-channel Kondo effect is found to be robust against the inclusion of an
on-site repulsion on the level. For a large on-site repulsion and a large
asymmetry in the tunneling rates to box and to the lead, there is a sequence of
Kondo effects: first the local magnetic moment that forms on the level
undergoes single-channel screening, followed by two-channel overscreening of
the charge fluctuations inside the box.Comment: 21 pages, 19 figure
Probing the primordial power spectra with inflationary priors
We investigate constraints on power spectra of the primordial curvature and
tensor perturbations with priors based on single-field slow-roll inflation
models. We stochastically draw the Hubble slow-roll parameters and generate the
primordial power spectra using the inflationary flow equations. Using data from
recent observations of CMB and several measurements of geometrical distances in
the late Universe, Bayesian parameter estimation and model selection are
performed for models that have separate priors on the slow-roll parameters. The
same analysis is also performed adopting the standard parameterization of the
primordial power spectra. We confirmed that the scale-invariant
Harrison-Zel'dovich spectrum is disfavored with increased significance from
previous studies. While current observations appear to be optimally modeled
with some simple models of single-field slow-roll inflation, data is not enough
constraining to distinguish these models.Comment: 23 pages, 3 figures, 7 tables, accepted for publication in JCA
