Optical spectroscopy of IRAS sources with infrared emission bands. 1: IRAS 21282+5050 and the diffuse interstellar bands
Spectroscopy of the starlike optical counterpart to IRAS 21282+5050, a source with the hydrocarbon infrared emission band spectrum, shows an 07(f)-(WC11) planetary nebula nucleus suffering an extinction of 5.7 mag. Emission line widths in the WC spectrum are only approx. 100 km/s, indicating a very slow stellar wind. Optical diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) are prominent. Five DIBs are strongly enhanced, namely lamda lamda 5797, 6196, 6203, 6283, and 6613. The presence of circumstellar hydrocarbon molecules may explain both the infrared emission bands and the enhanced DIBs
Results of heating mode performance tests of a solar-assisted heat pump
The performance of a heat pump, utilizing 8.16 square meters of low-cost solar collectors as the evaporator in a Freon-114 refrigeration cycle, was determined under actual insolation conditions during the summer and fall of 1976. C.O.P.'s (coefficient of performance) greater than 3 were obtained with condensing temperatures around 78 C and evaporating temperatures around 27 C. Ambient temperatures were about 3 C above evaporating temperatures. Similar performance levels were obtained at other insolation and temperature conditions. Experience with the system has identified some component and system changes which should increase the obtainable C.O.P. to about 4.0. These are described along with the system's design rationale. An economic and performance design study of solar preheaters for domestic hot water heaters in North Carolina
The performance and estimated material costs for several solar preheaters for domestic hot water heaters using isolation levels present in North Carolina are presented. The effects of monthly variations in isolation and the direction of incident radiation are included. Demand is assumed at 13 gallons (49.2 liters) per day per person. The study shows that a closed circulation system with 82 gallons (310 liters) of preheated storage and 53.4 cu ft (4.94 cu m) of collector surface with single cover can be expected to cost about $800 and to repay it capital cost and interest (at 8%) in 5.2 years, assuming present electric rates increase at 5% per year
An analytical investigation of the performance of solar collectors as nighttime heat radiators in airconditioning cycles
It was found that if the upper and lower ends of a collector were opened, large free convention currents may be set up between the collector surface and the cover glass(es) which can result in appreciable heat rejection. If the collector is so designed that both plates surfaces are exposed to convection currents when the upper and lower ends of the collector enclosure are opened, the heat rejection rate is 300 watts sq m when the plate is 13 C above ambient. This is sufficient to permit a collector array designed to provide 100 percent of the heating needs of a home to reject the accumulated daily air conditioning load during the course of a summer night. This also permits the overall energy requirements for cooling to be reduced by at least 15 percent and shift the load on the utility entirely to the nighttime hours

Research on web mashups and visual languages
share an interest in human-centered computing. Both
research communities are concerned with supporting
programming by everyday, technically inexpert users.
Visual programming environments have been a focus for
both communities, and we believe that there is much to
be gained by further discussion between these research
communities. In this paper we explore some connections
between web mashups and visual languages, and try to
identify what each might be able to learn from the other.
Our goal is to establish a framework for a dialog
between the communities, and to promote the exchange
of ideas and our respective understandings of humancentered

First-principles Calculations of Engineered Surface Spin Structures
The engineered spin structures recently built and measured in scanning
tunneling microscope experiments are calculated using density functional
theory. By determining the precise local structure around the surface
impurities, we find the Mn atoms can form molecular structures with the binding
surface, behaving like surface molecular magnets. The spin structures are
confirmed to be antiferromagnetic, and the exchange couplings are calculated
within 8% of the experimental values simply by collinear-spin GGA+U
calculations. We can also explain why the exchange couplings significantly
change with different impurity binding sites from the determined local
structure. The bond polarity is studied by calculating the atomic charges with
and without the Mn adatoms
Snowpack ground truth: Radar test site, Steamboat Springs, Colorado, 8-16 April 1976
Ground-truth data taken at Steamboat Springs, Colorado is presented. Data taken during the period April 8, 1976 - April 16, 1976 included the following: (1) snow depths and densities at selected locations (using a Mount Rose snow tube); (2) snow pits for temperature, density, and liquid water determinations using the freezing calorimetry technique and vertical layer classification; (3) snow walls were also constructed of various cross sections and documented with respect to sizes and snow characteristics; (4) soil moisture at selected locations; and (5) appropriate air temperature and weather data
