Illinois Lo-Cal House

The increasing scarcity of fuels makes it imperativeto include more energy conservation features in our housing. This circular describes the design, construction, and predicted performance of a house that uses approximately one-third of the energy needed to heat a house of the same size which is built to meet 1974 insulation standards (United States Department of Housing and Urban Development standards for houses located in areas having a heating season of between 4500 and 8000 degree-days). Because of its low-energy requirements for heating, the house has been called the "Illinois Lo-Cal House." If the Lo-Cal House is compared to the typical house of 1950, the savings are even more dramatic. The two features which account for the exceptional reduction are: 1) Superior insulation 2) Solar orientation Of the reduction, about 80% or more is due to the heavy insulation. The remaining reduction is due to the location of most of the windows in the south wall, where they act as solar collectors

Are OSHA Health Inspections Effective? A Longitudinal Study in the Manufacturing Sector

We examine the impact of OSHA health inspections on compliance with agency regulations in the manufacturing sector, with a unique plant-level dataset of inspection and compliance behavior during 1972-1983, the first twelve years of OSHA enforcement operations. Two major findings are robust across the range of linear and count models estimated in the paper: (1) the number of citations and the number of violations of worker exposure restrictions decrease with additional health inspections in manufacturing plants; and (2) the first health inspection has the strongest impact. The results suggest that prior research focusing on the limited impact of OSHA safety regulations may under-estimate OSHA's total contribution to reducing workplace risks.

A partial test of the contingency model on adult-led groups of children

The problem was to test the applicability of Fiedler\u27s contingency model on 15 adult-led groups of children in a field situation. The effectiveness of high and low least preferred co-worker (LPC) leaders on structured and unstructured group tasks was investigated when leader­ member relations were good and leaders had strong power. The data were analyzed in a 2 x 2 factorial design using the analysis of variance. None of the F tests reached statistical significance, thus the model was not supported. Several possible reasons for the findings were given as well as suggestions for future research
