Design of a tunable, room temperature, continuous-wave terahertz source and detector using silicon waveguides

We describe the design of a silicon-based source for radiation in the 0.5-14 THz regime. This new class of devices will permit continuously tunable, milliwatt scale, cw, room temperature operation, a substantial advance over currently available technologies. Our silicon terahertz generator consists of a silicon waveguide for near-infrared radiation, contained within a metal waveguide for terahertz radiation. A nonlinear polymer cladding permits two near-infrared lasers to mix, and through difference-frequency generation produces terahertz output. The small dimensions of the design greatly increase the optical fields, enhancing the nonlinear effect. The design can also be used to detect terahertz radiation

Analysis of Liquid-Phase Chemical Detection Using Guided Shear Horizontal-Surface Acoustic Wave Sensors

    Get PDF
Direct chemical sensing in liquid environments using polymer-guided shear horizontal surface acoustic wave sensor platforms on 36° rotated Y-cut LiTaO3 is investigated. Design considerations for optimizing these devices for liquid-phase detection are systematically explored. Two different sensor geometries are experimentally and theoretically analyzed. Dual delay line devices are used with a reference line coated with poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and a sensing line coated with a chemically sensitive polymer, which acts as both a guiding layer and a sensing layer or with a PMMA waveguide and a chemically sensitive polymer. Results show the three-layer model provides higher sensitivity than the four-layer model. Contributions from mass loading and coating viscoelasticity changes to the sensor response are evaluated, taking into account the added mass, swelling, and plasticization. Chemically sensitive polymers are investigated in the detection of low concentrations (1-60 ppm) of toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes in water. A low-ppb level detection limit is estimated from the present experimental measurements. Sensor properties are investigated by varying the sensor geometries, coating thickness combinations, coating properties, and curing temperature for operation in liquid environments. Partition coefficients for polymer-aqueous analyte pairs are used to explain the observed trend in sensitivity for the polymers PMMA, poly(isobutylene), poly(epichlorohydrin), and poly(ethyl acrylate) used in this work

    Star formation in Seyfert galaxies

An analysis of the IRAS data for a sample of classical (optically selected) Seyfert galaxies is presented. The IRAS fluxes at 25 micron, 60 micron, and 100 micron are found to be uncorrelated or only very weakly correlated with the UV/Optical continuum flux and the near and mid IR flux at 3.5 and 10 microns. To investigate the possibility that star formation accounts for the far IR flux, the IRAS measurements for the Seyfert galaxies are compared to IRAS observations of a sample of normal spiral galaxies, and a sample of Starburst galaxies. It is shown that the far IR luminosities and far IR colors of Seyfert galaxies are indistinguishable from those of the Starburst galaxies. Besides, normal galaxies are an order of magnitude less luminous than both the Seyfert and the Starburst galaxies. This indicates that star formation produces the bulk of the far infrared emission in Seyfert galaxies

Reaction of 3,5-(CF3)(2)PzLi with [Rh(mu-Cl)(eta(2)-C2H4)(2)](2) or [Rh(mu-Cl)(PMe3)(2)](2) in Et2O gave the dinuclear complexes [Rh(eta(2)-C2H4)(2)(mu-3,5-(CF3)(2)-Pz)](2) (1) and [Rh-2(mu-Cl)(mu-3,5-(CF3)(2)-Pz) (PMe3)(4)] (2) respectively (3,5-(CF3)(2)Pz = bis-trifluoromethyl pyrazolate). Reaction of PMe3 with [Rh(COD)(mu-3,5-(CF3)(2)-Pz)](2) in toluene gave [Rh(3,5-(CF3)(2)-Pz)(PMe3)(3)] (3). Reaction of 1 and 3 in toluene (1 : 4) gave moderate yields of the dinuclear complex [Rh(PMe3)(2)(mu-3,5-(CF3)(2)-Pz)](2) (4). Reaction of 3,5-(CF3)(2)PzLi with [Rh(PMe3)(4)]Cl in Et2O gave the ionic complex [Rh(PMe3)(4)][3,5-(CF3)(2)-Pz] (5). Two of the complexes, 1 and 3, were studied for use as CVD precursors. Polycrystalline thin films of rhodium (fcc-Rh) and metastable-amorphous films of rhodium phosphide (Rh2P) were grown from 1 and 3 respectively at 170 and 130 degrees C, 0.3 mmHg in a hot wall reactor using Ar as the carrier gas (5 cc min(-1)). Thin films of amorphous rhodium and rhodium phosphide (Rh2P) were grown from 1 and 3 at 170 and 130 degrees C respectively at 0.3 mmHg in a hot wall reactor using H-2 as the carrier gas (7 cc min(-1)).Welch Foundation F-816Petroleum Research Fund 47014-ACSNSF 0741973Chemistr

Hybrid III-V/Si distributed-feedback laser based on adhesive bonding

    Get PDF
A hybrid evanescently coupled III-V/silicon distributed-feedback laser with an integrated monitor photodiode, based on adhesive divinyl siloxane-benzocyclobutene bonding and emitting at 1310 nm, is presented. An output power of similar to 2.85 mW is obtained in a continuous wave regime at 10 degrees C. The threshold current is 20 mA and a sidemode suppression ratio of 45 dB is demonstrated. Optical feedback is provided via corrugations on top of the silicon rib waveguide, while a specially developed bonding procedure yields 40-nm-thick adhesive bonding layers, enabling efficient evanescent coupling
