Collecting Older Lesbians' and Gay Men's Stories of Rural Life in South West England and Wales: "We Were Obviously Gay Girls ... (So) He Removed His Cow From Our Field"

The emerging recollections, perceptions and storied biographies of older lesbians and gay men and their experiences in rural Britain are presented in the article, alongside consideration of the multiple qualitative methodologies used in a unique multi-method participatory action research project. The project aimed to empower older lesbians and gay men in rural areas through a collaborative design and meaningful participation in the research process itself. Methods included the core Biographic Narrative Interpretive Method (BNIM) (JONES, 2001, 2004; WENGRAF, 2001) with its interpretation of data by panels of citizens. In addition, visual ethnographic site visits, a focus group and two days of theatrical improvisation of interview data to explore action within the texts were used. The project embraced the principles of a performative social science (GERGEN & JONES, 2008; JONES, 2006, 2012a, 2012b) in its dissemination plan. Four of the collected stories are elaborated on here. These and other stories, reports and observations contributed to the creation of the main output of the project—a short professionally made film (Rufus Stone). The film is used to encourage community dialogue and inform service providers, opening up new possibilities of connectivity, communication and common ground at both macro and micro levels

Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain and Marital Adjustment Effects on the Spouse

Chronic musculoskeletal pain can fundamentally alter a marital relationship and have significant effects on marital satisfaction for both the chronic pain patient and spouse. This paper is a critical review of literature on chronic musculoskeletal pain and marital adjustment. Nineteen empirical studies are evaluated and serve as the data base for conclusions and recommendations. Variables which may effect marital satisfaction such as sexual function, spouse solicitousness, effects on the psychological and physical health of the spouse and gender differences are identified. The impact of these variables on marriage and the spouse in particular, is discussed. Implications for further research in this area are considered

Mobilizing Students and Community Partners to Enhance the Health of the Rural Elderly

The Health Enhancement of the Rural Elderly (HERE) project is a federally funded grant project designed to empower the rural elderly in Butler and Edmonson counties to maximize their use of the health care system. This project was developed after identifying the needs of approximately 25% of the population in the U.S. that reside in rural areas. Of this population in rural Kentucky, 14-15% is 65 years or older (U.S. Bureau of Census, 2000). A higher incidence of chronic diseases, disabilities, difficulties with daily living activities, and cutbacks in social services have been identified as factors causing this population to be compromised in their success with health care

Mandibuloacral Dysplasia Caused by LMNA Mutations and Uniparental Disomy.

Mandibuloacral dysplasia (MAD) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by postnatal growth retardation, craniofacial anomalies, skeletal malformations, and mottled cutaneous pigmentation. Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome (HGPS) is characterized by the clinical features of accelerated aging in childhood. Both MAD and HGPS can be caused by mutations in the LMNA gene. In this study, we describe a 2-year-old boy with overlapping features of MAD and HGPS. Mutation analysis of the LMNA gene revealed a homozygous missense change, p.M540T, while only the mother carries the mutation. Uniparental disomy (UPD) analysis for chromosome 1 showed the presence of maternal UPD. Markers in the 1q21.3-q22 region flanking the LMNA locus were isodisomic, while markers in the short arm and distal 1q region were heterodisomic. These results suggest that nondisjunction in maternal meiosis followed by loss of the paternal chromosome 1 during trisomy rescue might result in the UPD1 and homozygosity for the p.M540T mutation observed in this patient

Achieving Equity in Education: A Restorative Justice Approach

The critical role of education in making the United States a more equitable nation underscores the importance of eliminating the persistent academic achievement gap between students of color and White students. A school culture that fosters trusting relationships can play a key role in reducing this gap. This importance of trusting relationships at the core of school culture has, however, not always been recognized nor prioritized in policies and actions. Restorative justice, a philosophy based on repairing harm and creating a sense of belonging in a community, brings the discussion of trusting relationships into the public forum. This paper discusses how restorative practices are being used in a series of town halls for high school students in a central Oregon school district to build trusting relationships for students of color and to give them the tools to create systemic change in their schools around race and ethnicity. The paper adds to the relatively small, albeit growing, body of research on the relationship between the use of restorative practices and increased school engagement among students of color who are most vulnerable to school failure. Given the significant role of educational institutions as engines driving fairness and social justice, the paper also contributes to the literature on social equity, the fourth pillar of Public Administration

Motion of the State of Ohio to Dismiss

Alan Davis, Special Administrator of the Estate of Samuel Sheppard, through counsel, has requested the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas, by way of petition, to make a determination that he is a wrongfully incarcerated individual pursuant to R. C. §2305.02 and §2743.48. The State of Ohio asserts that, pursuant to Ohio Civil Rule 12 (B) (6) the court should dismiss the action. The State of Ohio is entitled to dismissal by operation of the doctrine of laches and the applicable statutes of limitation. Additionally, a claim of wrongful incarceration is a personal claim which an estate has no standing to pursue. Finally, any claim which may have been lawfully asserted by Samuel Sheppard has abated with his death, the passage of time, and his failure to pursue the claim at or near the time of his acquittal. Motion of the State of Ohio for Judgment on the Pleadings, Hearing Requested

The State of Ohio asserted that the claims brought forth by the Estate of Sam Sheppard fail as matter of law and requests a full hearing on the issues it presents. The motion makes three legal arguments: (1) the court lacks jurisdiction over the Estate of Sam Sheppard\u27s claims because the claim was unreasonably delayed, (2) the statute of limitations bars any claim that Sam Sheppard might have, and (3) the Estate of Sam Sheppard does not have standing to bring a wrongful imprisonment claim because the injured party is deceased.
