MAGICCARPET: Verified Detection and Recovery for Hardware-based Exploits
AbstractâMAGICCARPET is a new approach to defending systems against exploitable processor bugs. MAGICCARPET uses hardware to detect violations of invariants involving security-critical processor state and uses firmware to correctly push softwareâs state past the violations. The invariants are specified at run time. MAGICCARPET focuses on dynamically validating updates to security-critical processor state. In this work, (1) we generate correctness proofs for both MAGICCARPET hardware and firmware; (2) we prove that processor state and events never violate our security invariants at runtime; and (3) we show that MAGICCARPET copes with hardware-based exploits discovered post-fabrication using a combination of verified reconfigurations of invariants in the fabric and verified recoveries via reprogrammable software. We implement MAGICCARPET inside a popular open source processor on an FPGA platform. We evaluate MAGICCARPET using a diverse set of hardware-based attacks based on escaped and exploitable commercial processor bugs. MAGICCARPET is able to detect and recover from all tested attacks with no software run-time overhead in the attack-free case
Solvent-mediated isotope effects strongly influence the early stages of calcium carbonate formation: exploring D2O vs. H2O in a combined computational and experimental approach
In experimental studies, heavy water (D2O) is employed, e.g., so as to shift the spectroscopic solvent background, but any potential effects of this solvent exchange on reaction pathways are often neglected. While the important role of light water (H2O) during the early stages of calcium carbonate formation has been realized, studies into the actual effects of aqueous solvent exchanges are scarce. Here, we present a combined computational and experimental approach to start to fill this gap. We extended a suitable force field for molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Experimentally, we utilised advanced titration assays and time-resolved attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy. We find distinct effects in various mixtures of the two aqueous solvents, and in pure H2O or D2O. Disagreements between the computational results and experimental data regarding the stabilities of ion associates might be due to the unexplored role of HDO, or an unprobed complex phase behaviour of the solvent mixtures in the simulations. Altogether, however, our data suggest that calcium carbonate formation might proceed âmore classicallyâ in D2O. Also, there are indications for the formation of new structures in amorphous and crystalline calcium carbonates. There is huge potential towards further improving the understanding of mineralization mechanisms by studying solvent-mediated isotope effects, also beyond calcium carbonate. Last, it must be appreciated that H2O and D2O have significant, distinct effects on mineralization mechanisms, and that care has to be taken when experimental data from D2O studies are used, e.g., for the development of H2O-based computer models
The Dwarf Novae of Shortest Period
We present observations of the dwarf novae GW Lib, V844 Her, and DI UMa.
Radial velocities of H-alph yield orbital periods of 0.05332 +- 0.00002 d (=
76.78 m) for GW Lib and and 0.054643 +- 0.000007 d (= 78.69 m) for V844 Her.
Recently, the orbital period of DI UMa was found to be only 0.054564 +-
0.000002 d (= 78.57 m) by Fried et al. (1999), so these are the three shortest
orbital periods among dwarf novae with normal-abundance secondaries.
GW Lib has attracted attention as a cataclysmic binary showing apparent ZZ
Ceti-type pulsations of the white dwarf primary. Its spectrum shows sharp
Balmer emission flanked by strong, broad Balmer absorption, indicating a
dominant contribution by white-dwarf light. Analysis of the Balmer absorption
profiles is complicated by the unknown residual accretion luminosity and lack
of coverage of the high Balmer lines. Our best-fit model atmospheres are
marginally hotter than the ZZ Ceti instability strip, in rough agreement with
recent ultraviolet results from HST. The spectrum and outburst behavior of GW
Lib make it a near twin of WZ Sge, and we estimate it to have a quiescent V
absolute magnitude 12. Comparison with archival data reveals proper motion of
65 +- 12 mas/yr.
The mean spectrum of V844 Her is typical of SU UMa dwarf novae. We detected
superhumps in the 1997 May superoutburst with superhump period = 0.05597 +-
0.00005 d. The spectrum of DI UMa appears normal for a dwarf nova near minimum
light.
These three dwarf novae have nearly identical short periods but completely
dissimilar outburst characteristics. We discuss possible implications.Comment: Accepted for publication in Publications of the Astronomical Society

Synthesis and characterization of an fâblock terminal parent imido [U=NH] complex: a masked uranium(IV) nitride
Deprotonation of [U(TrenTIPS)(NH2)] (1) [TrenTIPS = N(CH2CH2NSiPri3)3] with organoalkali metal reagents MR (M = Li, R = But; M = NaâCs, R = CH2C6H5) afforded the imido-bridged dimers [{U-(TrenTIPS)(ÎŒ-N[H]M)}2] [M = L âCs (2aâe)]. Treatmentof 2c (M = K) with 2 equiv of 15 crown-5 ether (15C5) afforded the uranium terminal parent imido complex [U(TrenTIPS)(NH)][K(15C5)2] (3c), which can also be viewed as a masked uranium(IV) nitride. The uraniumâimido linkage was found to be essentially linear, and theoretical calculations suggested Ï2Ï4 polarized UâN multiple bonding. Attempts to oxidize 3c to afford the neutral uranium terminal parent imido complex [U(TrenTIPS)(NH)] (4) resulted in spontaneous disproportionation to give 1 and the uraniumânitride complex [U(TrenTIPS)(N)] (5); this reaction is a new way to prepare the terminal uraniumânitride linkage and was calculated to be exothermic by â3.25 kcal molâ1
Microvillar and ciliary defects in zebrafish lacking an actin-binding bioactive peptide amidating enzyme

Peptidylglycine α-amidating monooxygenase (PAM), a membrane enzyme essential for the synthesis of amidated bioactive peptides, was recently identified in motile and non-motile (primary) cilia and has an essential role in ciliogenesis in Chlamydomonas, Schmidtea and mouse. In mammalian cells, changes in PAM levels alter secretion and organization of the actin cytoskeleton. Here we show that lack of Pam in zebrafish recapitulates the lethal edematous phenotype observed in Pamâ/â mice and reveals additional defects. The pamâ/â zebrafish embryos display an initial striking loss of microvilli and subsequently impaired ciliogenesis in the pronephros. In multiciliated mouse tracheal epithelial cells, vesicular PAM staining colocalizes with apical actin, below the microvilli. In PAM-deficient Chlamydomonas, the actin cytoskeleton is dramatically reorganized, and expression of an actin paralogue is upregulated. Biochemical assays reveal that the cytosolic PAM C-terminal domain interacts directly with filamentous actin but does not alter the rate of actin polymerization or disassembly. Our results point to a critical role for PAM in organizing the actin cytoskeleton during development, which could in turn impact both microvillus formation and ciliogenesis.This study was supported by grants DK032949 (to BAE and REM), DK044464 (to JDG) and GM051293 (to SMK) from the National Institutes of Health
Chandra Observations of the Dwarf Nova WX Hyi in Quiescence
We report Chandra observations of the dwarf nova WX Hyi in quiescence. The
X-ray spectrum displays strong and narrow emission lines of N, O, Mg, Ne, Si, S
and Fe. The various ionization states implied by the lines suggest that the
emission is produced within a flow spanning a wide temperature range, from T ~
10^6 K to T >~ 10^8 K. Line diagnostics indicate that most of the radiation
originates from a very dense region, with n ~ 10^{13}-10^{14} cm^{-3}. The
Chandra data allow the first tests of specific models proposed in the
literature for the X-ray emission in quiescent dwarf novae. We have computed
the spectra for a set of models ranging from hot boundary layers, to hot
settling flows solutions, to X-ray emitting coronae. WX Hyi differs from other
dwarf novae observed at minimum in having much stronger low temperature lines,
which prove difficult to fit with existing models, and possibly a very strong,
broad O VII line, perhaps produced in a wind moving at a few x 10^3 km/s. The
accretion rate inferred from the X-rays is lower than the value inferred from
the UV. The presence of high-velocity mass ejection could account for this
discrepancy while at the same time explaining the presence of the broad O VII
line. If this interpretation is correct, it would provide the first detection

Outbursts of EX Hydrae: mass-transfer events or disc instabilities?
We present the 45-yr record of EX Hya's lightcurve and discuss the
characteristics of its 15 observed outbursts. We then concentrate on the 1998
outburst, reporting the first outburst X-ray observations. We discover an X-ray
beat-cycle modulation, indicating that an enhanced accretion stream couples
directly with the magnetosphere in outburst, confirming our previous
prediction. Optical eclipse profiles late in outburst show that the visible
light is dominated by an enhanced mass-transfer stream overflowing the
accretion disc. We are uncertain whether the enhanced mass transfer is
triggered by a disc instability, or by some other cause. While in outburst, EX
Hya shows some of the characteristics of SW Sex stars.Comment: To appear in MNRAS (8 pages; 9 figs
