Impact-related microspherules in Late Pleistocene Alaskan and Yukon “muck” deposits signify recurrent episodes of catastrophic emplacement
Large quantities of impact-related microspherules have been found in fine-grained sediments retained within seven out of nine, radiocarbon-dated, Late Pleistocene mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) and bison (Bison priscus) skull fragments. The well-preserved fossils were recovered from frozen “muck” deposits (organic-rich silt) exposed within the Fairbanks and Klondike mining districts of Alaska, USA, and the Yukon Territory, Canada. In addition, elevated platinum abundances were found in sediment analysed from three out of four fossil skulls. In view of this new evidence, the mucks and their well-preserved but highly disrupted and damaged vertebrate and botanical remains are reinterpreted in part as blast deposits that resulted from several episodes of airbursts and ground/ice impacts within the northern hemisphere during Late Pleistocene time (~46–11 ka B.P.). Such a scenario might be explained by encounters with cometary debris in Earth-crossing orbits (Taurid Complex) that was generated by fragmentation of a large short-period comet within the inner Solar System

A fixed sublithospheric source for the late Neogene track of the Yellowstone hotspot: Implications of the Heise and Picabo volcanic fields
The Heise and Picabo volcanic fields of eastern Idaho are part of the more extensive time-transgressive Yellowstone-Snake River Plain hotspot track. Calderas associated with these two silicic volcanic fields are buried under 1 to 3 km of younger basalt, so their locations and eruption record histories have been based on analysis of silicic units along the margins of the eastern Snake River Plain along with some limited geophysical data. A 1.5 km borehole penetrating through basalt into underlying silicic rocks provides new data we used to reassess caldera locations and the timing of eruptions of these volcanic fields. Using these new caldera locations, we calculate an extension-adjusted rate of 2.35 cm/yr for the North American plate over the last 6.66 m.y. and a velocity of 2.30 cm/yr over the 10.27 m.y. Recalculation of a previously determined plate velocity-based migration of the deformation field surrounding the eastern Snake River Plain yields an extension-adjusted rate of 2.38 ± 0.21 cm/yr. These migration rates all fall within the previously published range of North American plate velocities of 2.2 ± 0.8 cm/yr, 2.4 cm/yr, and 2.68 ± 0.78 cm/yr based on a global hot spot reference frame. The consistency of these rates suggest that over the last 10 m.y., the Yellowstone hot spot is fixed with respect to the motion of the North American plate and therefore consistent with a classical deep-sourced hotspot model
Seasonal Changes in Atmospheric Noise Levels and the Annual Variation in Pigeon Homing Performance
Repeated releases of experienced homing pigeons from single sites were conducted between 1972 and 1974 near Cornell University in upstate New York and between 1982 and 1983 near the University of Pittsburgh in western Pennsylvania, USA. No annual variation in homing performance was observed at these sites in eastern North America, in contrast to results from a number of similar experiments in Europe. Assuming pigeons home using low-frequency infrasonic signals (~0.1–0.3 Hz), as has been previously proposed, the annual and geographic variability in homing performance within the northern hemisphere might be explained, to a first order, by seasonal changes in low-frequency atmospheric background noise levels related to storm activity in the North Atlantic Ocean, and by acoustic waveguides formed between the surface and seasonally reversing stratospheric winds. In addition, increased dispersion among departure bearings of test birds on some North American release days was possibly caused by infrasonic noise from severe weather events during tornado and Atlantic hurricane seasons
Micrometeorite Impacts in Beringian Mammoth Tusks and a Bison Skull
We have discovered what appear to be micrometeorites imbedded in seven late Pleistocene Alaskan
mammoth tusks and a Siberian bison skull. The micrometeorites apparently shattered on impact
leaving 2 to 5 mm hemispherical debris patterns surrounded by carbonized rings. Multiple impacts
are observed on only one side of the tusks and skull consistent with the micrometeorites having come
from a single direction. The impact sites are strongly magnetic indicating significant iron content. We
analyzed several imbedded micrometeorite fragments from both tusks and skull with laser ablation
inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF). These
analyses confirm the high iron content and indicate compositions highly enriched in nickel and depleted
in titanium, unlike any natural terrestrial sources. In addition, electron microprobe (EMP) analyses of
a Fe-Ni sulfide grain (tusk 2) show it contains between 3 and 20 weight percent Ni. Prompt gamma-ray
activation analysis (PGAA) of a particle extracted from the bison skull indicates ~0.4 mg of iron, in
agreement with a micrometeorite ~1 mm in diameter. In addition, scanning electron microscope (SEM)
images and XRF analyses of the skull show possible entry channels containing Fe-rich material. The
majority of tusks (5/7) have a calibrated weighted mean 14C age of 32.9 ± 1.8 ka BP, which coincides
with the onset of significant declines <36 ka ago in Beringian bison, horse, brown bear, and mammoth
populations, as well as in mammoth genetic diversity. It appears likely that the impacts and population
declines are related events, although their precise nature remains to be determined.

Analysis of the Younger Dryas Impact Layer
We have uncovered a thin layer of magnetic grains and microspherules, carbon spherules, and
glass-like carbon at nine sites across North America, a site in Belgium, and throughout the rims of 16 Carolina Bays. It is consistent with the ejecta layer from an impact event and has been dated to 12.9 ka BP coinciding with the onset of Younger Dryas (YD) cooling and widespread megafaunal extinctions in North America. At many locations the impact layer is directly below a black mat marking the sudden disappearance of the megafauna and Clovis people. The distribution pattern of the Younger Dryas boundary (YDB) ejecta layer is consistent with an impact near the Great
Lakes that deposited terrestrial-like ejecta near the impact site and unusual, titanium-rich
projectile-like ejecta further away. High water content associated with the ejecta, up to 28 at. %
hydrogen (H), suggests the impact occurred over the Laurentide Ice Sheet. YDB microspherules
and magnetic grains are highly enriched in TiO2. Magnetic grains from several sites are enriched
in iridium (Ir), up to 117 ppb. The TiO2/FeO, K/Th, TiO2/Zr, Al2O3/FeO+MgO, CaO/Al2O3, REE/
chondrite, FeO/MnO ratios and SiO2, Na2O, K2O, Cr2O3, Ni, Co, U, Th and other trace element
abundances are inconsistent with all terrestrial and extraterrestrial (ET) sources except for
KREEP, a lunar igneous rock rich in potassium (K), rare-earth elements (REE), phosphorus
(P), and other incompatible elements including U and Th. Normal Fe, Ti, and 238U/235U isotopic
abundances were found in the magnetic grains, but 234U was enriched over equilibrium values
by 50 % in Murray Springs and by 130 % in Belgium. 40K abundance is enriched by up to 100 %
in YDB sediments and Clovis chert artifacts. Highly vesicular carbon spherules containing
nanodiamonds, glass-like carbon, charcoal and soot found in large quantities in the YDB layer
are consistent with an impact followed by intense burning. Four holes in the Great Lakes, some
deeper than Death Valley, are proposed as possible craters produced by the airburst breakup of
a loosely aggregated projectile.

Eocambrian—Cambrian palaeomagnetism of the Armorican Massif, France
In an attempt to clarify pre-Hercynian continental configurations, palaeomagnetic data were collected from the spilites de Paimpol (640 ± 12 Myr), the diorite de St Quay (583 ± 40 Myr), the gabbro de Keralain (undated), the granite de Port-Scarff (557 ± 16 Myr), the rhyolitic ignimbrites of LÉzardrieux (546 ± 8 Myr) and the rhyolites de St Germain-le-Gaillard (Undated) from the unmetamorphosed to slightly metamorphosed Eocambrian–Cambrian terranes of the Domnonean Domain of northern Brittany and north-western Normandy. Upon stepwise thermal and/or alternating field demagnetization and using vector subtraction, the spilites de Paimpol yield a characteristic direction with declination ( D ) = 226.4°, inclination ( I ) =– 15.7°. Local remagnetization by microgranite dykes (approximately 560 Myr old) produced a dircction of D = 235.1°, I =+ 63.4°. The diorite de St Quay exhibits multivectorial behaviour revealing a characteristic component of D = 31.2°, I =– 2.3°, and a secondary component of D = 299.9°, I =+ 38.2°. The gabbro de Keralain shows a characteristic component ( D = 290.9°, I = 41.4°) similar to the diorite's secondary component, and gives a secondary component of D = 221.0°, I =+ 55.8°. This secondary component of the gabbro appears again as the characteristic (although somewhat scattered) directions of the granite de Porz-Scarff. Thus, the gabbro may be relatively dated as having been magnetized before the intrusion and cooling of the granite (557 ± 16 Myr) and after that of the diorite (583 ± 40 Myr). The data from the rhyolites are the least certain because of ambiguities in the radiometric dating and uncertain bedding corrections, but they contain directions near to those of the granite and the microgranite dykes, all believed to be of the same episode of acidic volcanism. The trend in palaeomagnetic poles from the Armorican Massif for the Eocambrian–Cambrian corresponds well with coeval data from the southern United Kingdom and Czechoslovakia (Bohemian Massif), suggesting that a single continental mass, Armorica, contained all three areas. A comparison with poles from Gondwanaland also shows a remarkable agreement and suggests a period of coherent movement during the Latest Precambrian and the Cambrian for Armorica and Gondwana, followed by later separation. This leaves the Armorica plate as a separate continental unit at the outset of the Caledonian orogeny later in the Palaeozoic.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/75303/1/j.1365-246X.1980.tb04830.x.pd
