Modeling of a Boiler Pipe with Two-Phase Flow Instabilities
Tubes with boiling are common elements of many processes. They appear in steam generators and refrigerators and many other systems. The behavior of such systems is complicated and many physical phenomena are involved. It has for example been observed that different types of instabilities can occur. In this paper we will discuss modeling of tubes with boiling. As an application we will discuss an instability phenomenon due to pressure oscillations that has been observed experimentally in many different situations. We will first derive a simple analytical model which is able to capture the oscillations qualitatively. The simple model also gives insight into the mechanisms that generate the oscillations. A more complicated model is then built using a recently developed model base library in Modelica. A comparison between the simple and the complicated model is also give
Security Mechanisms of wireless Building Automation Systems
This paper describes the security mechanisms of several wireless building automation technologies, namely ZigBee, EnOcean, ZWave, KNX, FS20, and Home-Matic. It is shown that none of the technologies provides the necessary measure ofsecurity that should be expected in building automation systems. One of the conclusions drawn is that software embedded in systems that are build for a lifetime of twenty years or more needs to be updatable
Multiple incursion pathways for Helicoverpa armigera in Brazil show its genetic diversity spreading in a connected world
The Old World cotton bollworm Helicoverpa armigera was first detected in Brazil with subsequent reports from Paraguay, Argentina, Bolivia, and Uruguay. This pattern suggests that the H. armigera spread across the South American continent following incursions into northern/central Brazil, however, this hypothesis has not been tested. Here we compare northern and central Brazilian H. armigera mtDNA COI haplotypes with those from southern Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay. We infer spatial genetic and gene flow patterns of this dispersive pest in the agricultural landscape of South America. We show that the spatial distribution of H. armigera mtDNA haplotypes and its inferred gene flow patterns in the southwestern region of South America exhibited signatures inconsistent with a single incursion hypothesis. Simulations on spatial distribution patterns show that the detection of rare and/or the absence of dominant mtDNA haplotypes in southern H. armigera populations are inconsistent with genetic signatures observed in northern and central Brazil. Incursions of H. armigera into the New World are therefore likely to have involved independent events in northern/central Brazil, and southern Brazil/Uruguay-Argentina-Paraguay. This study demonstrates the significant biosecurity challenges facing the South American continent, and highlights alternate pathways for introductions of alien species into the New World
Ethics in Automotive Engineering
The need for reflecting engineers that can deal with ethical dilemmas are increasingly important. In the automotive field, the âdiesel gateâ in 2015[1] has put the ethical aspect in focus. However, this scandal can be explained by a consequence of (bad) political decisions and (insufficient) technological development. The dilemma for the students (and the society as well) is that these problems are complex and that there are no clear âright or wrongâ. Nevertheless, no matter how difficult the problem, ethical dilemmas will need to be dealt with and the future engineers from Chalmers can contribute to a more (ethically) sustainable future.In the masterâs program Automotive Engineering (MPAUT), the course in Internal Combustion Engines (MTF240) is used as the platform for practice in ethical reflections. With central support (from Karl Fine de Licht), the âapplied ethicsâ approach is implemented using a bottom-up approach, working with a hypothetical but realistic ethical dilemma. The TLA consists of one lecture and one assignment. By applying a âgeneric model for critical thinking on ethical issuesâ, the students write a small assignment (two by two) within the course.The students perform reasonably well, and the correction of the PMs is not very rigorous. In the future, the assessment may need to be more stringent as well as the lecture and instruction also need to be continuously improved. The course evaluations are generally positive (however not excellent, average 4.0) and the students are not used to this kind of assignment. However, itâs very interesting and rewarding (as a teacher) to read the students reflections and even if their ethical reflection skills are not very advanced, the reflection exercise is hopefully a valuable experience in their future career. \ua0\ua0\ua0[1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_emissions_scanda
