Critical Entanglement for the Half-Filled Extended Hubbard Model
We study the ground state of the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model at
half-filling using the entanglement entropy calculated by Density Matrix
Renormalization Group (DMRG) techniques. We apply a novel curve fitting and
scaling method to accurately identify a order critical point as well
as a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) critical point. Using open boundary
conditions and medium-sized lattices with very small truncation errors, we are
able to achieve similar accuracy to previous authors. We also report
observations of finite-size and boundary effects that can be remedied with
careful pinning.Comment: 10 pages, 12 figure
Attention control comparisons with SLT for people with aphasia following stroke: methodological concerns raised following a systematic review
Objective: Attention control comparisons in trials of stroke rehabilitation require care to minimize the risk of comparison choice bias. We compared the similarities and differences in SLT and social support control interventions for people with aphasia. Data sources: Trial data from the 2016 Cochrane systematic review of SLT for aphasia after stroke. Methods: Direct and indirect comparisons between SLT, social support and no therapy controls. We double-data extracted intervention details using the template for intervention description and replication. Standardized mean differences and risk ratios (95% confidence intervals (CIs)) were calculated. Results: Seven trials compared SLT with social support (n  =  447). Interventions were matched in format, frequency, intensity, duration and dose. Procedures and materials were often shared across interventions. Social support providers received specialist training and support. Targeted language rehabilitation was only described in therapy interventions. Higher drop-out (P  =  0.005, odds ratio (OR) 0.51, 95% CI 0.32–0.81) and non-adherence to social support interventions (P  <  0.00001, OR 0.18, 95% CI 0.09–0.37) indicated an imbalance in completion rates increasing the risk of control comparison bias. Conclusion: Distinctions between social support and therapy interventions were eroded. Theoretically based language rehabilitation was the remaining difference in therapy interventions. Social support is an important adjunct to formal language rehabilitation. Therapists should continue to enable those close to the person with aphasia to provide tailored communication support, functional language stimulation and opportunities to apply rehabilitation gains. Systematic group differences in completion rates is a design-related risk of bias in outcomes observed
The Influence of US Drug Price Dynamics on Cost-Effectiveness Analyses of Biologics
Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the influence of drug price dynamics in cost-effectiveness analyses.
Methods: We evaluated scenarios involving typical US drug price increases during the exclusivity period and price decreases after the loss of exclusivity (LOE). Worked examples are presented using the Institute for Clinical and Economic Review’s assessments of tezepelumab for the treatment of severe asthma and targeted immune modulators for rheumatoid arthritis.
Results: Tezepelumab case: yearly 2% price increases during the period of exclusivity and a post-LOE price decrease of 25% yielded an incremental cost per quality-adjusted life-year (QALY) gained that increased over the base case from 444 600 (+3.2%). Yearly 2% price increases followed by a steeper post-LOE price reduction of 40% resulted in a cost per QALY gained of 121 000 and 119 200/QALY). Including a 2% yearly price increase during the projected exclusivity periods of both intervention and comparator increased the cost per QALY gained by \u3e 60%.
Conclusion: Two biologic treatment cases incorporating price dynamics in cost-effectiveness analyses had varied impacts on the cost-effectiveness ratio depending on the magnitude of pre-LOE price increase and post-LOE price decrease and whether the LOE also affected the comparator. Yearly price increase magnitude during the period of exclusivity, among other factors, may counterbalance the effects of lower post-LOE intervention prices
Low Carbon Energy Democracy in the Global South?
Social science tools and practitioner experiences help to understand relations of democratic processes to low carbon energy transitions in the Global South. This requires interrogating Euro-centric assumptions about participation, national development, and infrastructure models in conditions of inequality and state capture. Issues of historical extractive energy injustice and the asymmetries of Southern climate vulnerability as compared to Northern GHG emission sources, drag this topic into political focus for questioning the models of mass consumption that have driven economic development over two centuries. Can democracy be reinvented with renewables
Deconstruction over Demolition: Manasc Isaac Architects a case study
This photographic documentary examines everyday activism through the lens of sustainable construction. There are many misconceptions about the construction industry and its impact on the environment. Focusing on the Edmonton-based architectural firm Manasc Isaac, this project aims to define sustainable development and explore the procedures practiced in this specific industry by using photography to bring awareness to forward-thinking architectural processes
