Introduction Success, defined as career progression, is a primary concern for new librarians and library school students in this era of constantly shifting priorities. Stacking your own unique skill sets establishes your professional reputation and can make you irreplaceable. Being thought of as irreplaceable can lead to significantly higher job security, better pay, more opportunities, respect from your peers, awards and honors for your work, and leadership opportunities. Succeeding as an academic librarian requires the construction and maintenance of a professional reputation, involvement in professional organizations, and construction of effective narratives in order to effectively advocate for yourself in promotion and/or tenure reviews. Conclusion Imagine your career as a movie and that you are the writer and director. One of the most famous screenwriting mottos is “know your ending,” which, in this case, is your vision. How do you envision your career? The clearer you can see it, the easier it is going to be to reverse-engineer your way there. Once you know the direction you must take, you can create steps and goals that help you achieve that vision. Each goal can be broken down into smaller, easy-to-complete mini-goals. Each step will bring you closer to the destination, just as each goal you set will build your capacity to reach your career nirvana

    The Spanish colloquial construction X hizo/ se marcó un Nombre propio (‘X did/pulled a Proper Name’) (for example: Edurne hizo/ se marcó un Angelina Jolie ‘Edurne did/pulled an Angelina Jolie’) has become widespread in recent years. Its subject acts as thematic agent, appears only with the verbs hacer(se) and marcarse, and its direct object is an determiner phrase introduced by un and followed by a proper name that is interpreted as a dynamic, delimited event. The ad hoc concept that is understood by this proper name depends on the context of the participants in the interaction, who are expected to recognize an event that corresponds with behavior that is typical of the individual mentioned. Contributing to the acquisition of this construction are both the loan of a similar construction in English and the previous existence of the verb hacer used with direct objects whose origins are proper names (for example: El saltador hizo un fósbury ‘The jumper did a Fosbury flop’).En los últimos años se ha difundido en el español coloquial la construcción X hizo/ se marcó un Nombre propio (v.gr. Edurne hizo/ se marcó un Angelina Jolie).     El denuesto del maquillaje femenino: tópico literario y concepción ideológica patriarcal

    El uso de la cosmética, tanto conservativa como decorativa, se remonta a épocas muy tempranas de la Humanidad. Por ceñirnos a culturas cercanas, el maquillaje tuvo mucha importancia en el Egipto antiguo, en Grecia y en Roma. En este trabajo se pasa revista al concepto de cosmética, a sus dos modalidades (conservativa y decorativa) y a las principales recetas y productos usados en la Roma antigua en cada una de las dos modalidades. Sobre esta base, a continuación se trata de un motivo literario, que es también una actitud constante en el hombre respecto al cuidado cosmético. Se trata del denuesto del maquillaje femenino, que se documenta en este trabajo en la cultura clásica, en la poesía española de los Siglos de Oro y en manifestaciones populares de la cultura moderna. Se presenta igualmente un análisis componencial de los elementos del denuesto. Finalmente, se reflexiona sobre la naturaleza antropológica de este motivo literario e ideológico. Se comenta, para terminar, que existe una contradicción aparente: el hombre dice rechazar el maquillaje femenino, pero en la práctica se siente atraído por mujeres que están maquilladas suave y efectivamente.The use of cosmetics is a well established practice from very ancient periods of Humanhood. There are two main purposes for the use of cosmetics: preservation and adornment. Make up was much practiced in Ancient Egypt, Classical Greece and Ancient Rome. In this essay, the concept of cosmetics, its two main modalities, and the main recipes and products used in Ancient Rome are documented and discussed. Then, the topos of the invective against female make up is studied. This topos appears in varied literary sources in Latin and Spanish literature. The motif is also present in modern popular culture (blogs, songs). A componential analysis of the topos is also provided. Finally, a discussion on the likely anthropological nature of the topos is included. An apparent contradiction arises in the fact that men declare to abhor female make up, but then they feel attracted by women who are made up delicately and effectively

    Search for the ⁷³Gaground-state doublet splitting in the β decay of ⁷³Zn

    The existence of two close-lying nuclear states in ⁷³Ga has recently been experimentally determined: a 1/2⁻ spin-parity for the ground state was measured in a laser spectroscopy experiment, while a J_π = 3/2⁻ level was observed in transfer reactions. This scenario is supported by Coulomb excitation studies, which set a limit for the energy splitting of 0.8 keV. In this work, we report on the study of the excited structure of ⁷³Ga populated in the β decay of ⁷³Zn produced at ISOLDE, CERN. Using β-gated, γ-ray singles, and γ –γ coincidences, we have searched for energy differences to try to delimit the ground-state energy splitting, providing a more stringent energy difference limit. Three new half-lives of excited states in ⁷³Ga have been measured using the fast-timing ;method with LaBr₃(Ce) detectors. From our study, we help clarify the excited structure of ⁷³G and we extend the existing ⁷³Zn decay to ⁷³Ga with 8 new energy levels and 35 γ transitions. We observe a 195-keV transition consistent with a γ ray de-exciting a short-lived state in the β-decay parent ⁷³Zn

    A multi-faceted orientation program can provide a strong foundation for self-efficacy, job satisfaction, and retention of academic librarians. At many colleges and universities, academic librarians have faculty status. Becoming a member of a faculty involves an extensive process of socialization. This paper examines the literature of higher education and library science on the topic. It identifies the characteristics of effective orientation from that literature. Incorporating an organizational socialization model with the findings from both bodies of literature resulted in a flexible, multi-dimensional model for the orientation of academic library faculty. One university library is an example that can be readily adapted in any academic library

    First g(2+) measurement on neutron-rich 72 Zn, and the high-velocity transient field technique for radioactive heavy-ion beams

    The high-velocity transient-field (HVTF) technique was used to measure the g factor of the 2+ state of 72Zn produced as a radioactive beam. The transient-field strength was probed at high velocity in ferromagnetic iron and gadolinium hosts using 76Ge beams. The potential of the HVTF method is demonstrated and the difficulties that need to be overcome for a reliable use of the TF technique with high-Z, high-velocity radioactive beams are revealed. The polarization of K-shell vacancies at high velocity, which shows more than an order of magnitude difference between Z = 20 and Z = 30 is discussed. The g-factor measurement hints at the theoretically predicted transition in the structure of the Zn isotopes near N = 40

    Properties of the 5- state at 839 keV in 176Lu and the s-process branching at A = 176

    The s-process branching at mass number A = 176 depends on the coupling between the high-K ground state and a low-lying low-K isomer in 176Lu. This coupling is based on electromagnetic transitions via intermediate states at higher energies. The properties of the lowest experimentally confirmed intermediate state at 839 keV are reviewed, and the transition rate between low-K and high-K states under stellar conditions is calculated on the basis of new experimental data for the 839 keV state. Properties of further candidates for intermediate states are briefly analyzed. It is found that the coupling between the high-K ground state and the low-K isomer in 176Lu is at least one order of magnitude stronger than previously assumed leading to crucial consequences for the interpretation of the 176Lu/176Hf pair as an s-process thermometer.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures accepted for publication in Phys.
