Combined docking and grasping device
A combined docking and grasping device for use with a manipulator arm on a docking vehicle and the like for mechanically connecting a docking vehicle with an orbital payload having a receptacle for receiving the device is described. The device includes a pair of opposing jaw members having opposing serrated surfaces for grasping an object and a triangular cam portion on an outer surface for insertion and interlocking with an orbital payload
A numerical solution of the Navier-Stokes equations for chemically nonequilibrium, merged stagnation shock layers on spheres and two-dimensional cylinders in air
Results of solving the Navier-Stokes equations for chemically nonequilibrium, merged stagnation shock layers on spheres and two-dimensional cylinders are presented. The effects of wall catalysis and slip are also examined. The thin shock layer assumption is not made, and the thick viscous shock is allowed to develop within the computational domain. The results show good comparison with existing data. Due to the more pronounced merging of shock layer and boundary layer for the sphere, the heating rates for spheres become higher than those for cylinders as the altitude is increased
An approach to rescheduling activities based on determination of priority and disruptivity
A constraint-based scheduling system called SPIKE is being used to create long term schedules for the Hubble Space Telescope. Feedback for the spacecraft or from other ground support systems may invalidate some scheduling decisions and those activities concerned must be reconsidered. A function rescheduling priority is defined which for a given activity performs a heuristic analysis and produces a relative numerical value which is used to rank all such entities in the order that they should be rescheduled. A function disruptivity is also defined that is used to place a relative numeric value on how much a pre-existing schedule would be changed in order to reschedule an activity. Using these functions, two algorithms (a stochastic neural network approach and an exhaustive search approach) are proposed to find the best place to reschedule an activity. Prototypes were implemented and preliminary testing reveals that the exhaustive technique produces only marginally better results at much greater computational cost

This retrieval system builds, updates, retrieves, and performs basic statistical analyses on blood, urine, and diet parameters for the M071 and M073 Skylab and Apollo experiments. This system permits data entry from cards to build an indexed sequential file. Programs are easily modified for specialized analyses
Time Delay Induced Death in Coupled Limit Cycle Oscillators
We investigate the dynamical behaviour of two limit cycle oscillators that
interact with each other via time delayed coupling and find that time delay can
lead to amplitude death of the oscillators even if they have the same
frequency. We demonstrate that this novel regime of amplitude "death" also
exists for large collections of coupled identical oscillators and provide
quantitative measures of this death region in the parameter space of coupling
strength and time delay. Its implication for certain biological and physical

Electronic structure and magnetic properties of Li_2ZrCuO_4 - a spin 1/2 Heisenberg system in vicinity to a quantum critical point
Based on density functional calculations, we present a detailed theoretical
study of the electronic structure and the magnetic properties of the quasi-one
dimensional chain cuprate Li_2ZrCuO_4 (Li_2CuZrO_4). For the relevant ratio of
the next-nearest neighbor exchange J_2 to the nearest neighbor exchange J_1 we
find alpha = -J_2/J_1 = 0.22\pm0.02 which is very close to the critical point
at 1/4. Owing this vicinity to a ferromagnetic-helical critical point, we study
in detail the influence of structural peculiarities such as the reported Li
disorder and the non-planar chain geometry on the magnetic interactions
combining the results of LDA based tight-binding models with LDA+U derived
exchange parameters. Our investigation is complemented by an exact
diagonalization study of a multi-band Hubbard model for finite clusters
predicting a strong temperature dependence of the optical conductivity for

The element and subcomponent testing conducted to verify the under the wing composite nacelle design is reported. This composite nacelle consists of an inlet, outer cowl doors, inner cowl doors, and a variable fan nozzle. The element tests provided the mechanical properties used in the nacelle design. The subcomponent tests verified that the critical panel and joint areas of the nacelle had adequate structural integrity
Synthesis, Structure, and Ferromagnetism of a New Oxygen Defect Pyrochlore System Lu2V2O_{7-x} (x = 0.40-0.65)
A new fcc oxygen defect pyrochlore structure system Lu2V2O_{7-x} with x =
0.40 to 0.65 was synthesized from the known fcc ferromagnetic semiconductor
pyrochlore compound Lu2V2O7 which can be written as Lu2V2O6O' with two
inequivalent oxygen sites O and O'. Rietveld x-ray diffraction refinements
showed significant Lu-V antisite disorder for x >= 0.5. The lattice parameter
versus x (including x = 0) shows a distinct maximum at x ~ 0.4. We propose that
these observations can be explained if the oxygen defects are on the O'
sublattice of the structure. The magnetic susceptibility versus temperature
exhibits Curie-Weiss behavior above 150 K for all x, with a Curie constant C
that increases with x as expected in an ionic model. However, the magnetization
measurements also show that the (ferromagnetic) Weiss temperature theta and the
ferromagnetic ordering temperature T_C both strongly decrease with increasing x
instead of increasing as expected from C(x). The T_C decreases from 73 K for x
= 0 to 21 K for x = 0.65. Furthermore, the saturation moment at a field of 5.5
T at 5 K is nearly independent of x, with the value expected for a fixed spin
1/2 per V. The latter three observations suggest that Lu2V2O_{7-x} may contain
localized spin 1/2 vanadium moments in a metallic background that is induced by
oxygen defect doping, instead of being a semiconductor as suggested by the C(x)
