    Social representations of psychology and the psychologist

    This study presents a qualitative approach to investigating public views on psychology and psychologists. Thirty two white British members of the general public who had never had direct contact with psychology services were recruited from community settings in north, south, east and west London (community centres, social clubs and working mens clubs). They participated in a semi-structured interview designed to tap their views on the nature of psychology, its practitioners and its clients. Two age groups were targeted (25-35 year olds and 65-75 year olds), with equal numbers of men and women in each A content analytic approach was used to explore what meanings people constructed and assigned to the concepts 'psychology' and 'psychologist', and how these meanings were related to the socio-cultural milieu within the UK at the end of the 20th century The theoretical basis for the study was social representations theory. This social constructionist approach emphasises the reciprocal interdependence between society and the individual, and the extent to which ideas from people's socio-cultural heritage continue to circulate within the public's collective discourse, constraining and shaping people's current beliefs. The vast majority of the participants seemed to hold social representations of psychology as a clinical discipline associated with mental health, and psychologists as high status medical professionals, akin to psychiatrists or doctors, who are experts in the study of the mind. There was also considerable consensus in associating seeing a psychologist with themes of threat and stigma. Only a minority of participants, mainly women, also viewed seeing a psychologist as a potentially positive move. Multiple models of the nature of psychological problems were suggested by the data. The principal emphases were on individual factors and on the role of personal experiences, with little or no attribution of psychological problems to innate 'wickedness', biological inheritance or systemic factors. Most participants viewed the psychologist's expertise as the primary therapeutic agent, with little direct emphasis on the therapeutic relationship. A number of salient sex differences emerged suggesting that men felt more threatened by psychology than women. The ideas concerning threat and the nature of psychological problems and treatments were common across the two age groups. However, amongst the younger participants there was greater evidence of additional ideas which could make psychology more acceptable to this age group. The findings are interpreted in terms of social representational and psychodynamic ideas, and discussed in terms of how they complement and extend existing quantitative work and related qualitative studies. Implications for clinical practice and suggestions for future research are considered

    A coordinate system that blockwise-simplifies the Kerr-Newman black hole's thermodynamical state space Ruppeiner metric geometry is constructed, with discussion of the limiting cases corresponding to simpler black holes.     Dilation of the olfactory bulb cavity concurrent with hydrocephalus in four small breed dogs

    Four small breed dogs were admitted with seizures. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain revealed dilation of the olfactory bulb cavity as well as enlargement of the lateral ventricles. These findings demonstrate that dilation of the olfactory bulb cavity can occur concurrent with hydrocephalus. This is the first description of the clinical and MRI features of dilation of the olfactory bulb cavity concurrent with hydrocephalus in dogs

    A novel real-world ecotoxicological dataset of pelagic microbial community responses to wastewater.

    Real-world observational datasets that record and quantify pressure-stressor-response linkages between effluent discharges and natural aquatic systems are rare. With global wastewater volumes increasing at unprecedented rates, it is urgent that the present dataset is available to provide the necessary information about microbial community structure and functioning. Field studies were performed at two time-points in the Austral summer. Single-species and microbial community whole effluent toxicity (WET) testing was performed at a complete range of effluent concentrations and two salinities, with accompanying environmental data to provide new insights into nutrient and organic matter cycling, and to identify ecotoxicological tipping points. The two salinity regimes were chosen to investigate future scenarios based on a predicted salinity increase at the study site, typical of coastal regions with rising sea levels globally. Flow cytometry, amplicon sequencing of 16S and 18S rRNA genes and micro-fluidic quantitative polymerase-chain reactions (MFQPCR) were used to determine chlorophyll-a and total bacterial cell numbers and size, as well as taxonomic and functional diversity of pelagic microbial communities. This strong pilot dataset could be replicated in other regions globally and would be of high value to scientists and engineers to support the next advances in microbial ecotoxicology, environmental biomonitoring and estuarine water quality modelling

    Re-engage: A novel nurse-led program for survivors of childhood cancer who are disengaged from cancer-related care

    Background: Survivors of childhood cancer often experience treatmentrelated chronic health conditions. Survivorship care improves survivors' physical and mental health, yet many are disengaged from care. Innovative models of care are necessary to overcome patient-reported barriers to accessing survivorship care and to maximize survivors' health. Methods:We piloted a novel survivorship program, called "Reengage,"a distance-delivered, nurse-led intervention aiming to engage, educate, and empower survivors not receiving any cancerrelated care. Re-engage involves a nurse-led consultation delivered via telephone/online to establish survivors' medical history and needs. Participants completed questionnaires at baseline, 1 month postintervention, and 6-month follow-up. Results: A total of 27 survivors who had not accessed survivorship care in the last 2 years participated (median age, 31 years; interquartile range [IQR], 27-39 years); of which, 82% were at high-risk for treatment-related complications. Participation in Re-engage was high (75%) and there was no attrition once survivors enrolled. At 1 month postintervention, 92% of survivors reported that Re-engage was "beneficial,"which all survivors reported at 6-month follow-up. Survivors' overall satisfaction with their care increased from 52% before Re-engage to 84% at 1 month postintervention. Survivors' mean self-efficacy scores remained similar from baseline to 1 month postintervention (b520.33, 95% CI, 21.31 to 0.65), but increased significantly from baseline to 6-month follow-up (b 5 1.64, 95% CI, 0.28-3.00). At 6-month follow-up, 73% of survivors showed an increase in health-related self-efficacy compared with baseline. Conclusions: Re-engage is a highly acceptable and feasible intervention and promotes health-related self-efficacy, which is integral to survivors being advocates for their own health. Further empirical work is needed to evaluate the long-term efficacy of Re-engage. Trial registration: ACTRN12618000194268

    Exploring the Universe with Metal-Poor Stars

    The early chemical evolution of the Galaxy and the Universe is vital to our understanding of a host of astrophysical phenomena. Since the most metal-poor Galactic stars (with metallicities down to [Fe/H]\sim-5.5) are relics from the high-redshift Universe, they probe the chemical and dynamical conditions of the Milky Way and the origin and evolution of the elements through nucleosynthesis. They also provide constraints on the nature of the first stars, their associated supernovae and initial mass function, and early star and galaxy formation. The Milky Way's dwarf satellites contain a large fraction (~30%) of the known most metal-poor stars that have chemical abundances that closely resemble those of equivalent halo stars. This suggests that chemical evolution may be universal, at least at early times, and that it is driven by massive, energetic SNe. Some of these surviving, ultra-faint systems may show the signature of just one such PopIII star; they may even be surviving first galaxies. Early analogs of the surviving dwarfs may thus have played an important role in the assembly of the old Galactic halo whose formation can now be studied with stellar chemistry. Following the cosmic evolution of small halos in simulations of structure formation enables tracing the cosmological origin of the most metal-poor stars in the halo and dwarf galaxies. Together with future observations and additional modeling, many of these issues, including the reionization history of the Milky Way, may be constrained this way. The chapter concludes with an outlook about upcoming observational challenges and ways forward is to use metal-poor stars to constrain theoretical studies.Comment: 34 pages, 11 figures.
