Saevae memorem Iunonis ob iram Juno, Veii, and Augustus

A driving force in Vergil’s Aeneid is the hostility of Juno to the Trojans as they approach, and finally arrive in Italy. The epic in some ways mirrors the opposition encountered by Augustus as the new ruler of Rome. Juno’s opposition to the Trojans has its origin not only in Greek mythology, but in the history of the local peoples of Italy with whom early Romans had to contend. From the outset of the poem she becomes the personification of these opposing forces. Once the Trojans finally reach mainland Italy, she sets in motion a long war, although the one depicted in the Aeneid was not as long as the real wars Romans waged with the Latin League and with the many of the tribes of Italy, including the Veii. The reality of the wars Rome had to contend with are here compared to the relatively brief one depicted in the Aeneid, and the pacification of Juno reflects the merging of the different peoples of Rome with their subjugator

Within Aotearoa/New Zealand, a bicultural relationship between Maori and Pakeha has produced a number of initiatives that are striving to be more inclusive of Maori needs, interests and language within the education system. The education system is attempting to ‘create space’ for Maori to be more proactively involved in decision-making forums with the integration of Maori knowledge and practices also occurring in areas like policy, research and teaching

Psychological impact of diagnosis and surgery in the treatment of early stage breast cancer

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the psychological impact of diagnosis and surgery in the treatment of eariy stage breast cancer. It was predicted that diagnosis of breast cancer would be associated with an acute stress reaction. Better psychological adjustment one month after surgery was predicted for women who had undergone breast-conserving surgery in comparison to patients who had received a mastectomy. Suppression of negative emotion in response to breast cancer diagnosis was predicted to be related to poorer short-term psychological adjustment.Method: Twenty-nine women completed baseline psychological measures one week after receiving a breast cancer diagnosis. Follow-up measures completed one month after surgery were obtained in twenty five cases. Evidence of acute stress response was measured using scores for intrusive distress and avoidance on the revised Impact of Events Scale (IES, Horowitz, 1979). Psychological adjustment was assessed based on several key factors described in the literature concerning the psychosocial outcome of breast cancer: levels of psychological distress (anxiety and depression), measured using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HAD, Zigmond & Snaith, 1983); coping responses obtained on the Mental Adjustment to Cancer Scale (MAC, Watson, Greer, Young et al, 1988b), and body image satisfaction, assessed using the recently developed Body Image Scale (BIS, Hopwood, Fletcher, Lee & Al Ghazal, 2001). Suppression of negative emotion was indicated by scores for control of negative emotion on an adapted version of the Basic Emotion Scale (Power, 2001).DATA ANALYSIS: Patient scores on psychological measures obtained one week after diagnosis and at follow up one month post-surgery were compared using a within and 1 between subjects repeated measures ANOVA. Patient age at diagnosis, and whether or not they were referred through screening, were then re-entered as covariates within the repeated measures design in post-hoc analyses. Backward multiple linear regression was carried out to examine emotional suppression as a predictor of adjustment assessed using the psychological measures completed at follow up post surgery.RESULTS: Evidence of acute stress response, indicated by clinical 'caseness' for intrusion and avoidance on the IES, was found in 28% of the sample assessed soon after diagnosis, with a proportion of patients (almost 20%) continuing to report high levels of intrusive distress and avoidance at follow up one month after surgery. As predicted, IES scores for intrusion and avoidance were significantly lower between assessment soon after diagnosis and at follow up after surgery (F 1,23 = 13.37, p<0.05). Consistent with previous reports in the literature, no effect was found for type of surgery on any of the measures used. Women who were younger at the time of diagnosis were, however, likely to be more anxious (F 1,23 = 4.48 p<0.05) and to experience greater levels of intrusive distress ( F 1,23 = 4.86, p<0.05). Suppression of negative in response to diagnosis predicted higher levels of intrusive distress and avoidance at one month (F2,22 =6.24, POD.05, R2 =.36), and greater levels of dissatisfaction with body image (F 1,22 = 7.74, p<0.05, R2 = 32). Results are discussed in relation to the previous literature, and in terms of implications for aspects of psychosocial care for breast cancer patients

Graduate Public Health Education in Africa: An Innovative Distance-Learning Model

    Get PDF
This article describes the development and implementation of a distance graduate public health education program in Africa by Loma Linda University, Loma Linda, California, U.S.A. The program started in March 2000 and ended in September 2003 with formal teaching sessions on-site held twice a year at the University of Eastern Africa, Kenya. The instruction was given in English and French. Of the cohort of 67 students from 20 African countries who started the program, 57 received an M.P.H. degree and six received a certificate in public health. The experiential learning model allowed students to immediately put into practice what they had learned. Challenges included security-related problems, accommodation/travel logistics and communication. In addition to the graduates, successful outcomes included the formation of the Pan-African Public Health Association. The new cadre of trained public health professionals represents enhancement to public health capacity in Africa

Flooding of December 29, 1984 Through January 2, 1985, in Northern New York State, With Flood Profiles of the Black and Salmon Rivers

Precipitation, snowmelt, and resultant flooding throughout northern New York from December 28 through January 2, 1985, were investigated through a detailed analysis of 56 precipitation stations, 101 stage and/or discharge gaging stations, and 9 miscellaneous measurement sites. Flood damage to property and roads and bridges exceeded $5 million. Lewis and Oswego Counties were declared Federal disaster areas, primarily a result of flooding of the Black River and Salmon River. Storm-precipitation and runoff maps show the storms \u27 greatest intensity to have been over the Tug Hill and southwest Adirondack areas. Total rainfall from December 28 through January 2 was 6.90 inches at Stillwater Reservoir but only 0.69 inches at Lake Placid. New peak discharges of record occurred at 17 gaging stations throughout northern New York, and the maximum discharge at 17 sites had recurrence intervals equal to or greater than 100 years. Computed inflows to 11 major lakes and reservoirs in northern New York indicate that significant volumes of water (as much as 5 inches of storm runoff at Stillwater Reservoir) were stored during the storm-runoff period. Maximum 1-day flood volumes at two gaging stations on the Black River had recurrence intervals greater than 100 years. To help evaluate the extent of flooding, 67 floodmarks were obtained along a 94-mile reach of the Black River from Dexter to Forestport, and several floodmarks were surveyed within major communities along the Salmon River. The floodmarks were obtained primarily near major bridges and dams along these rivers. (Author \u27s abstract

South Coast rock lobster OMP 2008 re-tuned

An OMP for recommending the TAC for South Coast rock lobster resource was developed and first implemented for 20081 (Johnston and Butterworth 2008). This OMP was intended to be implemented for two years, following which a review of the underlying operating models would decide whether this OMP could be implemented “as is” for a further two years (2010 and 2011) or if updates/retuning of this OMP would be required. In April 2010 the Rock Lobster Scientific Working Group (SWG) reviewed the 2010 updated assessment models of the resource (Johnston and Butterworth 2010a) and decided that these assessments showed some important changes with respect to the possible productivity of the resource compared to the 2008 operating models upon which the existing OMP-2008 had been simulation tested. A set of five updated operating models (OMs) were then selected against which to retest a revised OMP
