The Effects of Taurine and Caffeine Alone and in Combination on Locomotor Activity in the Rat

    Get PDF
In this study I examined whether or not the locomotor activity of a rat, as measured by the number of rotations in a rodent wheel and activity in the open field test, increased in the presence of combined taurine and caffeine, when compared to taurine or caffeine alone or control saline. As well as measuring activity, the open field test is also useful in evaluating anxiety, a potentially detrimental side effect of caffeine. Before stating the details of this experiment, research involving taurine and caffeine alone and in combination will be further examined

The Impact Of E-Learning On Physical Therapy Students’ Clinical Skill Development

    Get PDF
Purpose: The purpose of this special interest report is to review the effectiveness of e-learning in comparison to traditional classroom learning by exploring different methods of implementation of e-learning into PT curriculum Description: Education delivery via e-Learning is becoming a common teaching mode that appeals to students because it can be completed asynchronously at a self-directed pace and reviewed anytime, anywhere and as often as necessary for understanding. Translating knowledge from eLearning materials to skill performance is important to consider for PT students due to the requirements of psychomotor performance and demonstration of appropriate affective professional behaviors. Literature review: A literature search was conducted through PubMed and Scopus utilizing the following key terms: e-learning, blended learning, physical therapy, practical examination and clinical skills. The search resulted in eight studies, in which four were chosen for critical review as they most closely aligned with the question of interest and compared the use of adjunctive e-learning methods to a control group who received only traditional, face to face lecture, lab, and access to textbooks. In each study, at least one outcome measure assessed clinical skill performance based on a practical examination. No study reported negative impacts of e-Learning. Summary of Use: In each study, students who utilized e-learning to enhance their understanding of the material performed slightly higher on the practical exam, but not all findings were statistically significant. However, e-Learning was well-received and physical therapy students reported having more confidence, less anxiety and better understanding of grading standards prior to the practical exam. Since most students entering physical therapy school are digital natives the utilization of e-learning may relate well to their learning styles. E-learning may be more sustainable over time than traditional teaching methods and affords the learner individualization, self-paced learning and instructional consistency. Importance to Members: This review supports the idea that e-learning could be successfully utilized in a DPT curriculum as the results show clinical skills performance outcomes with e-learning are at least as good as traditional classroom instruction. Because clinical skills require professional interactions and psychomotor demonstration, e-learning is likely best utilized as a complementary means of learning, but not as a stand-alone source of instruction. Educational institutions may be able to extrapolate this information to achieve long-term cost savings and resource management within their educational programs. Overall, students continue to value in-class time to discuss material at a higher level, work through clinical cases, and ask questions for clarification of course content and objectives

Shifts in Assemblage of Foraging Bats at Mammoth Cave National Park Following Arrival of White-Nose Syndrome

The arrival of white-nose syndrome (WNS) to North America in 2006, and the subsequent decline in populations of cave-hibernating bats have potential long-term implications for communities of forest-dwelling bats in affected regions. Severe declines in wintering populations of bats should lead to concomitant shifts in the composition and relative abundance of species during the staging, maternity, and swarming seasons in nearby forested habitats. We examined capture rates of bats collected in mist nets from 2009 to 2016 to evaluate summer patterns in abundance of species pre- and post-arrival of WNS to Mammoth Cave National Park, KY. The data demonstrated a significant change in overall relative abundances. Myotis septentrionalis (Northern Long-eared Myotis) was the most commonly captured species pre-WNS but declined to 18.5% of its original abundance. Nycticeius humeralis (Evening Bat), uncommonly caught in mist nets pre-WNS, demonstrated the largest increase in capture success following arrival of WNS to the Park, followed by Eptesicus fuscus (Big Brown Bat) and Lasiurus borealis (Eastern Red Bat). These data suggest that losses of cave-hibernating bats to WNS may be leading to a restructuring of foraging bat assemblages in nearby forested habitats, with species less affected by WNS potentially exploiting niche space vacated by bats succumbing to infection with WNS

Barriers and Support to the Successful Postsecondary Transition of Virgin Islands Males With a Specific Learning Disability

The post high school transition for males with a specific learning disability (SLD) can be challenging. Unemployment among persons with disabilities was markedly higher than those without. There was also mounting evidence that showed that persons with disabilities had difficulties adjusting to post-secondary environments. For male students with disabilities, their post-secondary experience was impacted by the support services received, both at school and within their community. Little was known about the post-secondary experiences of minority males with SLD. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore post-secondary transition experiences among Virgin Islands male high school graduates with SLD. Particularly, this study sought to describe the barriers and support to their successful post-secondary transition. The social cognitive career theory was the theoretical framework used in this study. Six Virgin Islands males with SLD, who completed high school between 2010 and 2019, participated in semi-structured interviews. Interpretative phenomenological analytical strategies were used to analyze data from interviews. The results showed an overwhelmingly favorable response to the support received from parents, teachers, and counselors. Results also showed that males with SLD strived to achieve post-secondary education and gainful employment and independence, but they lacked self-advocacy skills that can help them successfully navigate through this transitionary period. Results of this study has the potential for positive social change by helping education administrators, the Virgin Islands vocational rehabilitation and other disability services in improving transition services for persons with disabilities by raising awareness among parents advocating and requesting optimal transitional services for their children

The effects of feeding corn containing an alpha-amylase gene on the performance and digestibility of growing cattle

Master of ScienceDepartment of Animal Sciences and IndustryDale A. BlasiTwo growth performance studies and two digestibility trials were conducted to evaluate the effects of feeding Enogen feed Corn silage and corn grain to growing cattle. In Experiment 1, there were a total of four diets offered for ad libitum intake. The four diets consisted of two varieties of corn (Enogen Feed Corn (EFC) vs. negative isoline control corn (CON)) with two different methods of corn processing (dry-rolled corn (DRC) vs. whole-shelled corn (WC)) and were formulated to provide 1.13 Mcal NEg/kg DM. ADG and final BW tended to be greater for calves fed EFC (P 0.82). Liquid passage rate was greater for CON-fed calves, which resulted in decreased digestibility. Total tract organic matter (OM) and dry matter (DM) digestibility was greater for EFC-fed calves (P 0.20), ruminal pH (P > 0.23), and ruminal VFA concentrations (P > 0.35) were unaffected by treatment. Numerical differences showed a 2.5% and a 2.2% increase in total tract DM digestibility and total tract OM digestibility, respectively, for calves fed the EFC silage diets

Monoclonal Antibody Activity in Human Umbilical Endothelial Cells That Possess Opposing Growth Factor Signaling Receptors

    Get PDF
In various clinical settings such a peripheral vascular disease and diabetes, patients can develop leaky blood vessels that leads to the extravasation of fluid in surrounding tissues, mainly in the lower limbs, ultimately resulting in edema and compromised blood flow. In an attempt to maintain vascular integrity and stability researchers have tried to modulate two key receptors on endothelial cells, Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Receptor-2 (VEGFR2) and tunica internal endothelial cell kinase 2 (Tie2) receptor using various approaches, including ligand administration and small molecule inhibition of kinase activity on the intracellular part of Tie-2. Various strategies for a therapy include monoclonal antibodies (Mabs) that influence the aforementioned pathways. The current poster describes a monoclonal antibody that binds a cell surface target protein and indirectly modulates the Tie-2 receptor activity

    A Posthumanist Pragmatism: Rereading Tomboys

    Get PDF
Gender has often dictated the roles and responsibilities that individuals are expected to fulfill. Societies in general still adhere to a strict gender binary system, and have largely been either intolerant of or, at minimum, uncomfortable with those who break from such a system. The tomboy figure has been the recipient of societal judgement for what has been interpreted to be a subversion of and deviance from traditional gender norms, and this has played out in a variety of ways. For instance, literary depictions of the tomboy—as the manifestations of the dominant cultural attitude—have captured both the aversion to as well as an evolving disposition toward non-feminine female characters. To trace and evaluate this trajectory, we utilize a framework provided by posthumanist theory, in conjunction with the pragmatic method. Important strains contained within posthumanism and pragmatism reject philosophical assumptions that there exists a single, true ontology, while promoting this-worldly notions concerning inclusion and diversity. By demonstrating how the tomboy has challenged presumptive ways of thinking, and continues to dispel preconceived notions and cultural expectations, we seek to show that the tomboy identity and disposition are to be celebrated for their authenticity and nonconformance, particularly as border-blurring and boundary-reducing, rather than deviating from or, for that matter, mirroring some purported true humanity. To accept such—that is, to hold any figure, tomboy or otherwise, as paradigmatic—would amount to a metaphysical endorsement for the knowability of a one and accurate experience, human or, even, otherwise. Alternatively, for us, the tomboy can serve as a valid model for how to undermine and help dismantle patriarchal and other prejudicial ideologies. Last, we attempt to show the increasing obsolescence of foundationalism as well as to ultimately offer the tomboy figure as a champion for continual self-enlargement, within a larger, posthumanist pragmatic process of self-creation
