    The long gamma-ray burst rate and the correlation with host galaxy properties

    To answer questions on the start and duration of the epoch of reionisation, periods of galaxy mergers and properties of other cosmological encounters, the cosmic star formation history (CSFH), is of fundamental importance. Using the association of long gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) with the death of massive stars and their ultra-luminous nature, the CSFH can be probed to higher redshifts than current conventional methods. Unfortunately, no consensus has been reached on the manner in which the LGRB rate (LGRBR) traces the CSFH, leaving many of the questions mentioned mostly unexplored by this method. Observations by the GRB NIR detector (GROND) over the past 4 years have, for the first time, acquired highly complete LGRB samples. Driven by these completeness levels and new evidence of LGRBs also occurring in more massive and metal rich galaxies than previously thought, the possible biases of the LGRBR-CSFH connection are investigated over a large range of galaxy properties. The CSFH is modelled using empirical fits to the galaxy mass function and galaxy star formation rates. Biasing the CSFH by metallicity cuts, mass range boundaries, and other unknown redshift dependencies, a LGRBR is generated and compared to the highly complete GROND sample. It is found that there is no strong preference for a metallicity cut or fixed galaxy mass boundaries and that there are no unknown redshift effects, in contrast to previous work which suggest values of Z/Z_sun~0.1-0.3. From the best-fit models, we predict that ~1.2% of the LGRB burst sample exists above z=6. The linear relationship between the LGRBR and the CSFH suggested by our results implies that redshift biases present in previous LGRB samples significantly affect the inferred dependencies of LGRBs on their host galaxy properties.     Open-mindedness can decrease persuasion amongst adolescents: The role of self-affirmation

    Objectives Self-affirmation (e.g., by reflecting on important personal values) has been found to promote more open-minded appraisal of threatening health messages in at-risk adults. However, it is unclear how self-affirmation affects adolescents and whether it has differential effects on the impact of these messages amongst those at relatively lower and higher risk. The current study explored moderation by risk. Design Participants were randomly assigned to either a self-affirmation or a control condition before receiving a health message concerning physical activity. Methods Older adolescents (N = 125) completed a self-affirmation or control writing task before reading about the health consequences of not meeting recommendations to be physically active for at least 60 min daily. Most of the sample did not achieve these levels of activity (98%, N = 123). Consequently, the message informed these participants that – unless they changed their behaviour – they would be at higher risk of heart disease. Participants completed measures of responses to the message and behaviour-specific cognitions (e.g., self-efficacy) for meeting the recommendations. Results For relatively inactive participants, self-affirmation was associated with increased persuasion. However, for those who were moderately active (but not meeting recommendations), those in the self-affirmation condition were less persuaded by the message. Conclusions Whilst self-affirmation can increase message acceptance, there are circumstances when the open-mindedness it induces may decrease persuasion. The evidence provided in this study suggests that caution may be needed when recommendations are challenging and it could be considered reasonable to be sceptical about the need to change behaviour

    Measurement of lightning location data which occur together with continental thunderstorms and hurricanes was examined, and a second phase linear interferometer was deployed. Electrical emission originating from tropical storms in the Gulf of Mexico were monitored. The time span between hurricane ALLEN (10 August 1980) and hurricane ALICIA (18 August 1983) represents the longest period that the United States has gone without hurricane landfall.     Interactions Between Rydberg-Dressed Atoms

    We examine interactions between atoms continuously and coherently driven between the ground state and a Rydberg state, producing "Rydberg-dressed atoms." Because of the large dipolar coupling between two Rydberg atoms, a small admixture of Rydberg character into a ground state can produce an atom with a dipole moment of a few Debye, the appropriate size to observe interesting dipolar physics effects in cold atom systems. We have calculated the interaction energies for atoms that interact via the dipole-dipole interaction and find that due to blockade effects, the R-dependent two-atom interaction terms are limited in size, and can be R-independent up until the dipolar energy is equal to the detuning. This produces R-dependent interactions different from the expected 1/R^3 dipolar form, which have no direct analogy in condensed matter physics, and could lead to new quantum phases in trapped Rydberg systems.Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures; Accepted to Phys.     Overheating threshold and its effect on time–temperature-transformation diagrams of zirconium based bulk metallic glasses

    A pronounced effect of overheating is observed on the crystallization behavior for the three zirconium-based bulk metallic glasses: Zr41.2Ti13.8Cu12.5Ni10Be22.5, Zr57Cu15.4Ni12.6Al10Nb5, and Zr52.5Cu17.9Ni14.6Al10Ti5. A threshold overheating temperature is found for each of the three alloys, above which there is a drastic increase in the undercooling level and the crystallization times. Time–temperature-transformation (TTT) diagrams were measured for the three alloys by overheating above their respective threshold temperatures. The TTT curves for Zr41.2Ti13.8Cu12.5Ni10Be22.5 and Zr57Cu15.4Ni12.6Al10Nb5 are very similar in shape and scale with their respective glass transition temperatures, suggesting that system-specific properties do not play a crucial role in defining crystallization kinetics in these alloys. The critical cooling rates to vitrify the alloys as determined from the TTT curves are about 2 K/s for Zr41.2Ti13.8Cu12.5Ni10Be22.5 and 10 K/s for Zr57Cu15.4Ni12.6Al10Nb5.     Correlations between deposition parameters and structural and electrical properties of YBa2Cu3O7–delta thin films grown in situ by sequential ion beam sputtering

    We have studied the correlations between deposition parameters and structural and electrical properties of YBa2Cu3O7–delta thin films grown in situ by sequential ion beam sputtering. Epitaxial, c-axis oriented YBa2Cu3O7–delta films were grown both on (100) SrTiO3 and on (100) MgO substrates following the stacking sequence of the ``123'' compound, with deposited layer thicknesses nominally equal to 1 monolayer. The c-axis lattice parameters obtained were larger than the corresponding lattice parameter in bulk samples, even after low-temperature anneals in O2. The transition temperatures were found to decrease with the enlargement of the c-axis lattice parameter. A clear correlation between growth temperature and the value of the c-axis lattice parameter was observed. The c-axis lattice parameter and the x-ray linewidth of Bragg reflections with the G vector along the c-axis were also found to be correlated. This suggests a relationship between the c-axis lattice parameter and the structural coherence of the epitaxial films

    Noncontact modulation calorimetry using electromagnetic heating and radiative heat loss under ultrahigh-vacuum conditions has been applied to levitated solid, liquid, and metastable liquid samples. This experiment requires a reduced gravity environment over an extended period of time and allows the measurement of several thermophysical properties, such as the enthalpy of fusion and crystallization, specific heat, total hemispherical emissivity, and effective thermal conductivity with high precision as a function of temperature. From the results on eutectic glass forming Zr-based alloys thermodynamic functions are obtained which describe the glass-forming ability of these alloys

    Ultralow noise performance of an 8.4-GHz maser-feedhorn system

    A total system noise temperature of 6.6 K was demonstrated with an 8.4-GHz traveling wave maser and feedhorn operating in a cryogenic environment. Both the maser and feedhorn were inserted in the helium cryostat, with the maser operating in the 1.6-K liquid bath and the feedhorn cooled in the helium gas, with a temperature gradient along the horn ranging from the liquid bath temperature at its lower end to room temperature at its top. The ruby maser exhibited 43 dB of gain with a bandwidth of 76 MHz(-3 dB) centered at 8400 MHz. Discussions of the maser, cooled feedhorn, and cryostat designs are presented along with a discussion of the noise temperature measurements
