Inclusive Education within the Haitian Educational System

    Get PDF
Research has indicated that Haiti is troubled with low resources, extreme poverty, malnourishment, violence, and a poor health and educational system. People with disabilities face overwhelming stigma and discrimination, resulting in limited resources and services available. Haitian teachers do not have the necessary knowledge and skills to provide appropriate identification and intervention methods within the classroom setting. The purpose of this Doctoral Capstone Project was to provide an educational training program to teachers in Haiti with the intended outcome of improving their ability to identify and provide care for children with disabilities and trauma. The approach was through the collaboration with Kozefò, a non-profit organization that supports the primary school, A New Arrival Center School (ANACS) in Haiti. A teacher training module and handouts were provided to the staff at ANACS. 20 participants completed this training and provided feedback through a post-training survey. The results from the survey and categorical thematic analysis indicate 6 themes: (1) Learned the concept of inclusive education; (2) How to work with children with disabilities; (3) Strategies to use in the classroom; (4) Specific strategies to use in the classroom; (5) Sensory disorders; & (6) Trauma. It is evident that teachers gained a more comprehensive understanding of these theme areas, as well as improved knowledge surrounding identification and intervention strategies to address disability and trauma in the classroom. The outcomes from this Doctoral Capstone Project present important implications for the site, the profession of occupational therapy, and the greater Haitian community. Participants gained a greater toolbox of strategies to use within themselves and their students. Furthermore, society-based implications include a better acceptance of disability in the community at large. Finally, the profession of occupational therapy as a whole has gained important outcomes, including a more profound worldview and impact of a global health initiative

Making it work: An enquiry into how companies in the community media sector recruit and retain skilled freelancers

This report is a timely and original development in the analysis of social interest creative practice. It takes the debate much further than merely exploring the merits of such projects, and directly provides an analysis of the economic and skills base for this area of work – the area ofcommunity media activity within the creative industries.According to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the creative industries are now one of the fastest growing sectors in the British economy, and socially aware creative practice is now gaining a stronger profile and being taken seriously by a wide range of cultural agencies. We feel this report provides an important step in recognising not only the economic realities of these community minded organisations via case studies of the companies themselves and the freelancers they employ, but also charts the average skills contained in this community media/arts field of work, and highlights its future sustainability. This report has been designed to be not only illuminating, but also be useful. It will be of interest to stakeholders of community based media & arts activity, including project facilitators, managers, funders and policy makers, and also for areas such as careers advice and academic fieldssuch as media studies and social policy. Hopefully this report will provide a platform from which to make informed decisions with confidence, from which the sub-sector of community based media education activity can strategically grow and flourish

Environmental Injustice: How Treaties Undermine Human Rights Related to the Environment

Growing cries for action to effectively address the climate and other environmental crises hold important implications for the governance of cross-border investments. Policymakers and environmental advocates have often overlooked how provisions granted by states in international investment agreements (IIAs) have been used by investors to challenge government measures taken in the public interest to protect the environment and advance environmental justice. This 2019 paper, published in the Sciences Po Legal Review issue devoted to the climate crisis, explains how the investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) mechanism, made available to investors in thousands of bilateral and multilateral trade and investment agreements, may influence the future of environmental justice. It revisits and builds upon discussions of how ISDS may chill legitimate and necessary regulation (or shift the costs thereof), elaborating upon theories of chill and providing examples of how ISDS has been used to challenge actions taken to address the climate crisis and protect threatened water resources. The paper also then explores implications for the environmental justice dimensions of environmental regulation, describing how ISDS can undermine democratic processes and stakeholders’ abilities to meaningfully participate in environmental decisionmaking and protect their rights. The paper concludes with recommendations on how states can address the systemic impact of ISDS on regulatory space over environmental and other matters of public interest

The Romanticization of Violent Male Offenders: How Trauma and Internalized Sexism Can Explain Women\u27s Fascination with Serial Killers

Past research has noted that women are interested in true crime more than men (Vicary & Fraley, 2014), and that some women romanticize violent male offenders (Isenberg, 1991). This study investigated women’s fascination with serial killers compared to other offenders and the psychological correlates of women who are fascinated with serial killers. I hypothesized women’s fascination was unique to serial killers and may be related to safe and culturally acceptable ways of coping with interpersonal trauma. Results largely support these hypotheses, indicating women were more fascinated with serial killers compared to other offenders, and with PTSD, child abuse, intimacy attitudes, and internalized sexism being correlates. This suggests traumatic events, negative attitudes toward intimacy, and internalized sexism influence women\u27s fascination with serial killers

International Investment Law and the Extractive Industries

    Get PDF
As of April 2022, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) tallied 3,218 international investment treaties, of which 2,558 are in force. Investors in extractive industries (the oil, gas, and mining sectors) have used investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) mechanisms embedded in these treaties to challenge a wide range of host state actions and inactions that have allegedly negatively affected their investments. Those claims, and the threats thereof, restrict states’ ability to maximize the benefits, and their ability to limit environmental and social harms, resulting from the exploitation of natural resources. This briefing note provides an introduction to international investment law, to assist stakeholders in grasping its diverse and significant implications for the governance of investments in extractive industries
