Unchanged thermopower enhancement at the semiconductor-metal transition in correlated FeSbTe
Substitution of Sb in FeSb by less than 0.5% of Te induces a transition
from a correlated semiconductor to an unconventional metal with large effective
charge carrier mass . Spanning the entire range of the semiconductor-metal
crossover, we observed an almost constant enhancement of the measured
thermopower compared to that estimated by the classical theory of electron
diffusion. Using the latter for a quantitative description one has to employ an
enhancement factor of 10-30. Our observations point to the importance of
electron-electron correlations in the thermal transport of FeSb, and

A Formal, Resource Consumption-Preserving Translation of Actors to Haskell
We present a formal translation of an actor-based language with cooperative
scheduling to the functional language Haskell. The translation is proven
correct with respect to a formal semantics of the source language and a
high-level operational semantics of the target, i.e. a subset of Haskell. The
main correctness theorem is expressed in terms of a simulation relation between
the operational semantics of actor programs and their translation. This allows
us to then prove that the resource consumption is preserved over this
translation, as we establish an equivalence of the cost of the original and

Retrospective evidence for a biological cost of vancomycin resistance determinants in the absence of glycopeptide selective pressures
To estimate the relative fitness differences between glycopeptide-resistant Enterococcus faecium (GREF) and glycopeptide-susceptible E. faecium (GSEF) from yearly surveillance data on the occurrence of GREF in Danish poultry farm environments.
A population genetic model was adapted to retrospectively estimate the biological fitness cost of acquired resistance. Maximization of a likelihood function was used to predict the longitudinal persistence of acquired resistance.
Our analysis suggests strong selection against GREF following the 1995 ban on the glycopeptide growth promoter avoparcin. However, parameterizing the model with two selection coefficients suggesting a reduced negative effect of the acquired resistance on bacterial fitness over time significantly improved the fit of the model. Our analyses suggest that the acquired glycopeptide resistance will persist for >25 years.
Conclusions Acquired resistance determinants in commensal E. faecium populations in Danish farm environments are likely to persist for decades, even in the absence of glycopeptide use
Increasing Incidence of Hospitalization for Stroke and Transient Ischemic Attack in Young Adults:A Registry-Based Study
BACKGROUND: Studies have reported increasing incidence of ischemic stroke in adults younger than 50 to 55 years. Information on temporal trends of other stroke subtypes and transient ischemic attack (TIA) is sparse. The aim of this study was to investigate temporal trends of the incidence of hospitalizations for TIA and stroke including sexâ and subtypeâspecific trends in young adults aged 15 to 30Â years. METHODS AND RESULTS: From the Danish National Patient Register, we identified all cases of firstâever stroke and TIA (age 15â30Â years) in Denmark, who were hospitalized during the study period of 1994 to 2012. Incidence rates and estimated annual percentage changes (EAPCs) were estimated by using Poisson regression. During the study period, 4156 cases of firstâever hospitalization for stroke/TIA were identified. The ageâstandardized incidence rates of hospitalizations for stroke increased significantly (EAPC 1.83% [95% CI 1.11â2.55%]) from 11.97/100Â 000Â personâyears (PY) in 1994 to 16.77/100Â 000Â PY in 2012. TIA hospitalizations increased from 1.93/100Â 000Â PY in 1994 to 5.81/100Â 000Â PY in 2012 and after 2006 more markedly in men than in women (EAPC 16.61% [95% CI 10.45â23.12%]). The incidence of hospitalizations for ischemic stroke was markedly lower among men, but increased significantly from 2006 (EAPC 14.60% [95% CI 6.22â23.63%]). The incidences of hospitalizations for intracerebral hemorrhage and subarachnoid hemorrhage remained stable during the study period. CONCLUSIONS: The incidence rates of firstâtime hospitalizations for ischemic stroke and TIA in young Danish adults have increased substantially since the mid 1990s. Two modes of glacial climate during the late stage 5 identified in Greenland ice core records
International audienceFrom a detailed analysis of marine and terrestrial aerosol tracers in the NGRIP ice core we identified two distinct glacial atmospheric flow patterns. The climate transition from Marine Isotope Stage 5 (MIS 5) to MIS 4, at approximately 75 kyr BP, marks a shift between two different atmospheric flow regimes. Before this transition, during MIS 5d-a, the state of atmospheric flow was alternating between the two modes of different flow patterns, while a more persistent flow pattern was prevailing through the glacial period afterwards. These changes are accompanied by strong changes in an independent Greenland ice core proxy, namely the deuterium excess from the GRIP ice core, reflecting changes in the hydrological cycle and moisture source temperatures as well. The changes in atmospheric flow pattern are correlated with changed extent of ice-rafted detritus (IRD) deposition in the North Atlantic, indicating that the state of the atmospheric flow was highly sensitive to the waxing and waning of the Laurentide ice sheet
Spin-dynamic field coupling in strongly THz driven semiconductors : local inversion symmetry breaking
We study theoretically the optics in undoped direct gap semiconductors which
are strongly driven in the THz regime. We calculate the optical sideband
generation due to nonlinear mixing of the THz field and the near infrared
probe. Starting with an inversion symmetric microscopic Hamiltonian we include
the THz field nonperturbatively using non-equilibrium Green function
techniques. We find that a self induced relativistic spin-THz field coupling
locally breaks the inversion symmetry, resulting in the formation of odd
sidebands which otherwise are absent.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure
Excitonic Dynamical Franz-Keldysh Effect
The Dynamical Franz-Keldysh Effect is exposed by exploring near-bandgap
absorption in the presence of intense THz electric fields. It bridges the gap
between the DC Franz- Keldysh effect and multi-photon absorption and competes
with the THz AC Stark Effect in shifting the energy of the excitonic resonance.
A theoretical model which includes the strong THz field non-perturbatively via
a non-equilibrium Green Functions technique is able to describe the Dynamical

Recombination of H3+ Ions in the Afterglow of a He-Ar-H2 Plasma
Recombination of H3+ with electrons was studied in a low temperature plasma
in helium. The plasma recombination rate is driven by two body, H3+ + e, and
three-body, H3+ + e + He, processes with the rate coefficients 7.5x10^{-8}cm3/s
and 2.8x10^{-25}cm6/s correspondingly at 260K. The two-body rate coefficient is
in excellent agreement with results from storage ring experiments and
theoretical calculations. We suggest that the three-body recombination involves
formation of highly excited Rydberg neutral H3 followed by an l- or m- changing
collision with He. Plasma electron spectroscopy indicates the presence of H3.Comment: 4 figure
