    HbA1c response and hospital admissions following commencement of flash glucose monitoring in adults with type 1 diabetes

    Introduction Our aim was to assess the effect of introducing flash monitoring in adults with type 1 diabetes with respect to change in hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and frequency of hospital admissions.Research design and methods Prospective observational study of adults with type 1 diabetes in our center, in whom a prescription for a flash monitoring sensor was collected. Primary outcome was change in HbA1c between 2016 and after flash monitoring. Rates of hospital admission were compared between the first year after flash monitoring and the corresponding 12-month period 2 years earlier.Results Approximately half of all adults with type 1 diabetes, attending our center, collected prescriptions for flash monitoring sensors (n=2216). Median fall in HbA1c was −1 (−0.1) mmol/mol (%) (p<0.001) and was greatest in those with baseline HbA1c >75 (9.0) mmol/mol (%): −10 (−0.9) mmol/mol (%), p<0.001. 43% of those with a baseline HbA1c >53 mmol/mol (7%) experienced a ≥5 mmol/mol (0.5%) fall in HbA1c. In addition to higher HbA1c, early commencement within 1 month of NHS-funded flash monitoring (p<0.001), and male gender (p=0.013) were associated with a fall in HbA1c of ≥5 (0.5) mmol/mol (%). Socioeconomic deprivation (p=0.009) and collecting fewer than 2 sensors per month (p=0.002) were associated with lack of response. Overall, hospital admissions did not change but an increase in admissions for hypoglycemia was observed (1.1% vs 0.3%, p=0.026).Conclusions Flash monitoring is associated with reduction in HbA1c in individuals with HbA1c >58 mmol/mol. Numerous clinical features are independently associated with HbA1c response. An increase in hypoglycemia admissions occurred following flash monitoring

    Detecting the influence of initial pioneers on succession at deep-sea vents

The definitive version was published in PLoS One 7 (2012): e50015, doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0050015.Deep-sea hydrothermal vents are subject to major disturbances that alter the physical and chemical environment and eradicate the resident faunal communities. Vent fields are isolated by uninhabitable deep seafloor, so recolonization via dispersal of planktonic larvae is critical for persistence of populations. We monitored colonization near 9°50′N on the East Pacific Rise following a catastrophic eruption in order to address questions of the relative contributions of pioneer colonists and environmental change to variation in species composition, and the role of pioneers at the disturbed site in altering community structure elsewhere in the region. Pioneer colonists included two gastropod species: Ctenopelta porifera, which was new to the vent field, and Lepetodrilus tevnianus, which had been rare before the eruption but persisted in high abundance afterward, delaying and possibly out-competing the ubiquitous pre-eruption congener L. elevatus. A decrease in abundance of C. porifera over time, and the arrival of later species, corresponded to a decrease in vent fluid flow and in the sulfide to temperature ratio. For some species these successional changes were likely due to habitat requirements, but other species persisted (L. tevnianus) or arrived (L. elevatus) in patterns unrelated to their habitat preferences. After two years, disturbed communities had started to resemble pre-eruption ones, but were lower in diversity. When compared to a prior (1991) eruption, the succession of foundation species (tubeworms and mussels) appeared to be delayed, even though habitat chemistry became similar to the pre-eruption state more quickly. Surprisingly, a nearby community that had not been disturbed by the eruption was invaded by the pioneers, possibly after they became established in the disturbed vents.     Sterility and Gene Expression in Hybrid Males of Xenopus laevis and X. muelleri

    BACKGROUND: Reproductive isolation is a defining characteristic of populations that represent unique biological species, yet we know very little about the gene expression basis for reproductive isolation. The advent of powerful molecular biology tools provides the ability to identify genes involved in reproductive isolation and focuses attention on the molecular mechanisms that separate biological species. Herein we quantify the sterility pattern of hybrid males in African Clawed Frogs (Xenopus) and apply microarray analysis of the expression pattern found in testes to identify genes that are misexpressed in hybrid males relative to their two parental species (Xenopus laevis and X. muelleri). METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Phenotypic characteristics of spermatogenesis in sterile male hybrids (X. laevis x X. muelleri) were examined using a novel sperm assay that allowed quantification of live, dead, and undifferentiated sperm cells, the number of motile vs. immotile sperm, and sperm morphology. Hybrids exhibited a dramatically lower abundance of mature sperm relative to the parental species. Hybrid spermatozoa were larger in size and accompanied by numerous undifferentiated sperm cells. Microarray analysis of gene expression in testes was combined with a correction for sequence divergence derived from genomic hybridizations to identify candidate genes involved in the sterility phenotype. Analysis of the transcriptome revealed a striking asymmetric pattern of misexpression. There were only about 140 genes misexpressed in hybrids compared to X. laevis but nearly 4,000 genes misexpressed in hybrids compared to X. muelleri. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Our results provide an important correlation between phenotypic characteristics of sperm and gene expression in sterile hybrid males. The broad pattern of gene misexpression suggests intriguing mechanisms creating the dominance pattern of the X. laevis genome in hybrids. These findings significantly contribute to growing evidence for allelic dominance in hybrids and have implications for the mechanism of species differentiation at the transcriptome level

    Recovery of social-ecological livestock farming system of the Picos de Europa (northern Spain)

    La resiliencia del sistema socioecológico (SSE) de Picos de Europa está amenazada por los cambios en la forma tradicional de explotación ganadera que agudiza la vulnerabilidad económica de la población local y por el éxodo hacia zonas urbanas acompañadas de una homogenización del paisaje. Se realizó una serie de encuestas-entrevistas con el fin de analizar la capacidad de la población para influir y ser influida por la dinámica de los cambios de usos del territorio y su percepción de los cambios ya ocurridos. Se apreció un conflicto de intereses entre los componentes del SSE y se plantearon probables tendencias de evolución del territorio integrando parámetros históricos, culturales y ambientales bajo diferentes políticas de gestión. La recuperación y la persistencia del SSE con niveles aceptables de productividad y de diversidad biológica y espacial serían viables con una gestión adaptativa y con una participación activa de la población local en la toma de decisiones. La continuidad en el tiempo del paisaje tradicional sostenido por la ganadería extensiva mantendría a su vez el desarrollo del turismo, actividad que constituye actualmente uno de los pilares de la economía local.Resilience of social-ecological system (SES) of the Picos de Europa is threatened by continuing changes of traditional livestock farmer activity which increase the economic vulnerability of the local population and their exodus to urban areas, as well as a homogenization of the landscape. We conducted a series of interviews-questionnaires in order to analyse the capacity of the population to have an influence or to be influenced by the dynamics of land use changes and their perception of previous changes. A conflict of interests among the SES components was detected and probable evolutionary trends by integrating historical, cultural and environmental parameters under different management policies were proposed. The recovery and persistence of this system under acceptable levels of biological and spatial diversity and productivity would be more viable under certain patterns of adaptive management and with the active participation of the local population in the decision-making processes. The continuity in time of the traditional landscape based on a livestock farming system would maintain the development of tourism, which is one of the current cornerstones of the local economy
