Roton immiscibility in a two-component dipolar Bose gas
We characterize the immiscibility-miscibility transition (IMT) of a
two-component Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with dipole-dipole interactions.
In particular, we consider the quasi-two dimensional geometry, where a strong
trapping potential admits only zero-point motion in the trap direction, while
the atoms are more free to move in the transverse directions. We employ the
Bogoliubov treatment of the two-component system to identify both the
well-known long-wavelength IMT in addition to a roton-like IMT, where the
transition occurs at finite-wave number and is reminiscent of the roton
softening in the single component dipolar BEC. Additionally, we verify the
existence of the roton IMT in the fully trapped, finite systems by direct
numerical simulation of the two-component coupled non-local Gross-Pitaevskii

Auxiliary field approach to dilute Bose gases with tunable interactions
We rewrite the Lagrangian for a dilute Bose gas in terms of auxiliary fields
related to the normal and anomalous condensate densities. We derive the loop
expansion of the effective action in the composite-field propagators. The
lowest-order auxiliary field (LOAF) theory is a conserving mean-field
approximation consistent with the Goldstone theorem without some of the
difficulties plaguing approximations such as the Hartree and Popov
approximations. LOAF predicts a second-order phase transition. We give a set of
Feynman rules for improving results to any order in the loop expansion in terms
of composite-field propagators. We compare results of the LOAF approximation
with those derived using the Popov approximation. LOAF allows us to explore the
critical regime for all values of the coupling constant and we determine
various parameters in the unitarity limit.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figure
Guidance of sentinel lymph node biopsy decisions in patients with T1-T2 melanoma using gene expression profiling.
AIM: Can gene expression profiling be used to identify patients with T1-T2 melanoma at low risk for sentinel lymph node (SLN) positivity?
PATIENTS & METHODS: Bioinformatics modeling determined a population in which a 31-gene expression profile test predicted \u3c5% SLN positivity. Multicenter, prospectively-tested (n = 1421) and retrospective (n = 690) cohorts were used for validation and outcomes, respectively.
RESULTS: Patients 55-64 years and â„65 years with a class 1A (low-risk) profile had SLN positivity rates of 4.9% and 1.6%. Class 2B (high-risk) patients had SLN positivity rates of 30.8% and 11.9%. Melanoma-specific survival was 99.3% for patients â„55 years with class 1A, T1-T2 tumors and 55.0% for class 2B, SLN-positive, T1-T2 tumors.
CONCLUSION: The 31-gene expression profile test identifies patients who could potentially avoid SLN biopsy
Convergence towards a European strategic culture? A constructivist framework for explaining changing norms.
The article contributes to the debate about the emergence of a European strategic culture to underpin a European Security and Defence Policy. Noting both conceptual and empirical weaknesses in the literature, the article disaggregates the concept of strategic culture and focuses on four types of norms concerning the means and ends for the use of force. The study argues that national strategic cultures are less resistant to change than commonly thought and that they have been subject to three types of learning pressures since 1989: changing threat perceptions, institutional socialization, and mediatized crisis learning. The combined effect of these mechanisms would be a process of convergence with regard to strategic norms prevalent in current EU countries. If the outlined hypotheses can be substantiated by further research the implications for ESDP are positive, especially if the EU acts cautiously in those cases which involve norms that are not yet sufficiently shared across countries
An Optically-Discovered Outburst from XTE J1859+226
Using the Zwicky Transient Facility, in 2021 February we identified the first
known outburst of the Black Hole X-ray Transient XTE J1859+226 since its
discovery in 1999. The outburst was visible at X-ray, UV, and optical
wavelengths for less than 20 days, substantially shorter than its 320-day full
outburst in 1999, and the observed peak luminosity was two orders of magnitude
lower. Its peak bolometric luminosity was only erg s,
implying an Eddington fraction of about . The source remained
in the hard spectral state throughout the outburst. From optical spectroscopy
measurements we estimate an outer disk radius of 10 cm. The low observed
X-ray luminosity is not sufficient to irradiate the entire disk, but we observe
a surprising exponential decline in the X-ray lightcurve. These observations
highlight the potential of optical and infrared (O/IR) synoptic surveys to

Inhibiting ERK Activation with CI-1040 Leads to Compensatory Upregulation of Alternate MAPKs and Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor-1 following Subtotal Nephrectomy with No Impact on Kidney Fibrosis
Extracellular-signal regulated kinase (ERK) activation by MEK plays a key role in many of the cellular processes that underlie progressive kidney fibrosis including cell proliferation, apoptosis and transforming growth factor ÎČ1-mediated epithelial to mesenchymal transition. We therefore assessed the therapeutic impact of ERK1/2 inhibition using a MEK inhibitor in the rat 5/6 subtotal nephrectomy (SNx) model of kidney fibrosis. There was a twentyfold upregulation in phospho-ERK1/2 expression in the kidney after SNx in Male Wistar rats. Rats undergoing SNx became hypertensive, proteinuric and developed progressive kidney failure with reduced creatinine clearance. Treatment with the MEK inhibitor, CI-1040 abolished phospho- ERK1/2 expression in kidney tissue and prevented phospho-ERK1/2 expression in peripheral lymphocytes during the entire course of therapy. CI-1040 had no impact on creatinine clearance, proteinuria, glomerular and tubular fibrosis, and α-smooth muscle actin expression. However, inhibition of ERK1/2 activation led to significant compensatory upregulation of the MAP kinases, p38 and JNK in kidney tissue. CI-1040 also increased the expression of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), a key inhibitor of plasmin-dependent matrix metalloproteinases. Thus inhibition of ERK1/2 activation has no therapeutic effect on kidney fibrosis in SNx possibly due to increased compensatory activation of the p38 and JNK signalling pathways with subsequent upregulation of PAI-1
Expansion of the Protein Repertoire in Newly Explored Environments: Human Gut Microbiome Specific Protein Families
The microbes that inhabit particular environments must be able to perform molecular functions that provide them with a competitive advantage to thrive in those environments. As most molecular functions are performed by proteins and are conserved between related proteins, we can expect that organisms successful in a given environmental niche would contain protein families that are specific for functions that are important in that environment. For instance, the human gut is rich in polysaccharides from the diet or secreted by the host, and is dominated by Bacteroides, whose genomes contain highly expanded repertoire of protein families involved in carbohydrate metabolism. To identify other protein families that are specific to this environment, we investigated the distribution of protein families in the currently available human gut genomic and metagenomic data. Using an automated procedure, we identified a group of protein families strongly overrepresented in the human gut. These not only include many families described previously but also, interestingly, a large group of previously unrecognized protein families, which suggests that we still have much to discover about this environment. The identification and analysis of these families could provide us with new information about an environment critical to our health and well being
Tropospheric water vapour isotopologue data (HâÂčâ¶O, HâÂčâžO, and HDÂčâ¶O) as obtained from NDACC/FTIR solar absorption spectra
We report on the ground-based FTIR (Fourier transform infrared) tropospheric water vapour isotopologue remote sensing data that have been recently made available via the database of NDACC (Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change; ftp://ftp.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/ndacc/MUSICA/) and via doi:10.5281/zenodo.48902. Currently, data are available for 12 globally distributed stations. They have been centrally retrieved and quality-filtered in the framework of the MUSICA project (MUlti-platform remote Sensing of Isotopologues for investigating the Cycle of Atmospheric water). We explain particularities of retrieving the water vapour isotopologue state (vertical distribution of H216O, H218O, and HD16O) and reveal the need for a new metadata template for archiving FTIR isotopologue data. We describe the format of different data components and give recommendations for correct data usage. Data are provided as two data types. The first type is best-suited for tropospheric water vapour distribution studies disregarding different isotopologues (comparison with radiosonde data, analyses of water vapour variability and trends, etc.). The second type is needed for analysing moisture pathways by means of H2O,âÎŽD-pair distributions
