Ternary Nitride Semiconductors in the Rocksalt Crystal Structure
Inorganic nitrides with wurtzite crystal structures are well-known
semiconductors used in optoelectronic devices. In contrast, rocksalt-based
nitrides are known for their metallic and refractory properties. Breaking this
dichotomy, here we report on ternary nitride semiconductors with rocksalt
crystal structures, remarkable optoelectronic properties, and the general
chemical formula MgTMN (TM=Ti, Zr, Hf, Nb). These compounds form
over a broad metal composition range and our experiments show that Mg-rich
compositions are nondegenerate semiconductors with visible-range optical
absorption onsets (1.8-2.1 eV). Lattice parameters are compatible with growth
on a variety of substrates, and epitaxially grown MgZrN exhibits
remarkable electron mobilities approaching 100 cmVs. Ab
initio calculations reveal that these compounds have disorder-tunable optical
properties, large dielectric constants and low carrier effective masses that
are insensitive to disorder. Overall, these experimental and theoretical
results highlight MgTMN rocksalts as a new class of
semiconductor materials with promising properties for optoelectronic
applications

Could a Kilonova Kill: a Threat Assessment
Binary neutron star mergers (BNS) produce high-energy emissions from several
physically different sources, including a gamma-ray burst (GRB) and its
afterglow, a kilonova, and, at late times, a remnant many parsecs in size.
Ionizing radiation from these sources can be dangerous for life on Earth-like
planets when located too close. Work to date has explored the substantial
danger posed by the GRB to on-axis observers: here we focus instead on the
potential threats posed to nearby off-axis observers. Our analysis is based
largely on observations of the GW 170817/GRB 170817A multi-messenger event, as
well as theoretical predictions. For baseline kilonova parameters, we find that
the X-ray emission from the afterglow may be lethal out to pc and the
off-axis gamma-ray emission may threaten a range out to pc, whereas
the greatest threat comes years after the explosion, from the cosmic rays
accelerated by the kilonova blast, which can be lethal out to distances up to
pc. The distances quoted here are typical, but the values have
significant uncertainties and depend on the viewing angle, ejected mass, and
explosion energy in ways we quantify. Assessing the overall threat to
Earth-like planets, have a similar kill distance to supernovae, but are far
less common. However, our results rely on the scant available kilonova data,
and multi-messenger observations will clarify the danger posed by such events.Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures. Comments welcom
User experiences of an American-adapted moderated online social media platform for first-episode psychosis: Qualitative analysis
Objectives
The current study sought to qualitatively characterize the experiences of American users in a recent open trial of the Horyzons digital platform.
Methods
In total, 20 users on Horyzons USA completed semistructured interviews 12 weeks after their orientation to the platform and addressed questions related to (1) the platform, (2) their online therapist, and (3) the peer workers and community space. A hybrid inductive-deductive coding strategy was used to conduct a thematic analysis of the data (NCT04673851).
Results
The authors identified seven prominent themes that mapped onto the three components of self-determination theory. Features of the platform itself as well as inter- and intra-personal factors supported the autonomous use of Horyzons. Users also reflected that their perceived competence in social settings and in managing mental health was increased by the familiarity, privacy, and perceived safety of the platform and an emphasis on personalized therapeutic content. The behaviors or traits of online therapists as perceived by users and regular contact with peers and peer support specialists satisfied users’ need for relatedness and promoted confidence in social settings. Users also described aspects of Horyzons USA that challenged their satisfaction of autonomy, competence, and relatedness, highlighting potential areas for future iterations of the platform's content and interface.
Conclusions
Horyzons USA is a promising digital tool that provides young adults with psychosis with the means to access tailored therapy material on demand and a supportive digital community to aid in the recovery process

A Multimodality Hybrid Gamma-Optical Camera for Intraoperative Imaging
The development of low profile gamma-ray detectors has encouraged the production of small field of view (SFOV) hand-held imaging devices for use at the patient bedside and in operating theatres. Early development of these SFOV cameras was focussed on a single modality-gamma ray imaging. Recently, a hybrid system-gamma plus optical imaging-has been developed. This combination of optical and gamma cameras enables high spatial resolution multi-modal imaging, giving a superimposed scintigraphic and optical image. Hybrid imaging offers new possibilities for assisting clinicians and surgeons in localising the site of uptake in procedures such as sentinel node detection. The hybrid camera concept can be extended to a multimodal detector design which can offer stereoscopic images, depth estimation of gamma-emitting sources, and simultaneous gamma and fluorescence imaging. Recent improvements to the hybrid camera have been used to produce dual-modality images in both laboratory simulations and in the clinic. Hybrid imaging of a patient who underwent thyroid scintigraphy is reported. In addition, we present data which shows that the hybrid camera concept can be extended to estimate the position and depth of radionuclide distribution within an object and also report the first combined gamma and Near-Infrared (NIR) fluorescence images.Peer-reviewedPublisher Versio
Simulating Collisions for Hydrokinetic Turbines. FY2010 Annual Progress Report.
Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of turbulent flow and particle motion are being conducted to evaluate the frequency and severity of collisions between marine and hydrokinetic (MHK) energy devices and debris or aquatic organisms. The work is part of a collaborative research project between Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and Sandia National Laboratories , funded by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Wind and Water Power Program. During FY2010 a reference design for an axial flow MHK turbine was used to develop a computational geometry for inclusion into a CFD model. Unsteady simulations of turbulent flow and the moving MHK turbine blades are being performed and the results used for simulation of particle trajectories. Preliminary results and plans for future work are presented
A Large Proportion of P. falciparum Isolates in the Amazon Region of Peru Lack pfhrp2 and pfhrp3: Implications for Malaria Rapid Diagnostic Tests
Background: Malaria rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) offer significant potential to improve the diagnosis of malaria, and are playing an increasing role in malaria case management, control and elimination. Peru, along with other South American countries, is moving to introduce malaria RDTs as components of malaria control programmes supported by the Global Fund for AIDS, TB and malaria. The selection of the most suitable malaria RDTs is critical to the success of the programmes. Methods: Eight of nine microscopy positive P. falciparum samples collected in Iquitos, Peru tested negative or weak positive using HRP2-detecting RDTs. These samples were tested for the presence of pfhrp2 and pfhrp3 and their flanking genes by PCR, as well as the presence of HRP proteins by ELISA. To investigate for geographic extent of HRP-deleted parasites and their temporal occurrence a retrospective study was undertaken on 148 microscopy positive P. falciparum samples collected in different areas of the Amazon region of Peru. Findings: Eight of the nine isolates lacked the pfhrp2 and/or pfhrp3 genes and one or both flanking genes, and the absence of HRP was confirmed by ELISA. The retrospective study showed that 61 (41%) and 103 (70%) of the 148 samples lacked the pfhrp2 or pfhrp3 genes respectively, with 32 (21.6%) samples lacking both hrp genes. Conclusions: This is the first documentation of P. falciparum field isolates lacking pfhrp2 and/or pfhrp3. The high frequency and wide distribution of different parasites lacking pfhrp2 and/or pfhrp3 in widely dispersed areas in the Peruvian Amazon implies that malaria RDTs targeting HRP2 will fail to detect a high proportion of P. falciparum in malaria-endemic areas of Peru and should not be used. RDTs detecting parasite LDH or aldolase and quality microscopy should be use for malaria diagnosis in this region. There is an urgent need for investigation of the abundance and geographic distribution of these parasites in Peru and neighbouring countries
