A computerised system to support environmental management in agriculture
overall aim of the system is to encourage and promote environmental responsibility through good agricultural practice with a profitable farming business. The system enables the user to assess environmental performance of a specific farm by comparison with sound practice and good housekeeping. The user can evaluate environmental impact by estimating environmental burdens using in-built mathematical models, expert systems, databases and utilising statistical information drawn from over a hundred years of agricultural research. A simple scoring approach has been used to quantify the scale of the impacts. A fully integrated hypertext advisory system has been developed to support these performance evaluations and also to aid the farmer navigate the wealth of information, science and legislation that is available.Non peer reviewe
Three-dimensional cell to tissue assembly process
The present invention relates a 3-dimensional cell to tissue and maintenance process, more particularly to methods of culturing cells in a culture environment, either in space or in a gravity field, with minimum fluid shear stress, freedom for 3-dimensional spatial orientation of the suspended particles and localization of particles with differing or similar sedimentation properties in a similar spatial region
The Radial Structure of SNR N103B
We report on the results from a Chandra ACIS observation of the young,
compact, supernova remnant N103B. The unprecedented spatial resolution of
Chandra reveals sub-arcsecond structure, both in the brightness and in spectral
variations. Underlying these small-scale variations is a surprisingly simple
radial structure in the equivalent widths of the strong Si and S emission
lines. We investigate these radial variations through spatially resolved
spectroscopy using a plane-parallel, non-equilibrium ionization model with
multiple components. The majority of the emission arises from components with a
temperature of 1 keV: a fully ionized hydrogen component; a high ionization
timescale (n_e*t > 10^12 s cm^-3) component containing Si, S, Ar, Ca, and Fe;
and a low ionization timescale (n_e*t ~ 10^{11} s cm^-3) O, Ne, and Mg
component. To reproduce the strong Fe Kalpha line, it is necessary to include
additional Fe in a hot (> 2 keV), low ionization (n_e*t ~ 10^10.8 s cm^-3)
component. This hot Fe may be in the form of hot Fe bubbles, formed in the
radioactive decay of clumps of 56Ni. We find no radial variation in the
ionization timescales or temperatures of the various components. Rather, the Si
and S equivalent widths increase at large radii because these lines, as well as
those of Ar and Ca, are formed in a shell occupying the outer half of the
remnant. A shell of hot Fe is located interior to this, but there is a large
region of overlap between these two shells. In the inner 30% of the remnant,
there is a core of cooler, 1 keV Fe. We find that the distribution of the
ejecta and the yields of the intermediate mass species are consistent with
model prediction for Type Ia events.Comment: 34 pages, including 7 tables and 7 figures, Accepted by Ap
Sulphur-isotope compositions of pig tissues from a controlled feeding study
Sulphur-isotope determinations are becoming increasingly useful for palaeodietary reconstruction, but knowledge of isotopic discrimination between diet and various tissues remains inadequate. In this study, we explore the sensitivity of δ34Stissue values to changes in δ34Sdiet values, sulphur isotopic discrimination between diet and consumer, and the potential impact of terrestrial vs. marine protein consumption on these discrimination offsets. We present new δ34S values of bone collagen, muscle, liver, hair, milk and faeces from ten mature sows, ten piglets and fifteen adolescent pigs from a controlled feeding study. The δ34Stissue values were found to co-vary with the δ34Sdiet values, the δ34Stissue – δ34Sdiet isotopic offsets (Δ34Stissue-diet) are small but consistent, and dietary protein source does not systematically alter the Δ34Stissue-diet isotopic discrimination. The outcomes of this study are of particular relevance to questions that are difficult to resolve using carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes alone, and will also be useful in regions where terrestrial, freshwater, and marine resources could have all potentially contributed to human diet
Effects of a Pyrrole-Based, Microtubule-Depolymerizing Compound on RAW 264.7 Macrophages
RAW 264.7 murine macrophages were exposed to the pyrrole-based compound 3,5-Dibromo-4-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-1H-pyrrole-2-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (JG-03-14), which is a known microtubule depolymerizing agent with antitumor activity [1,2,3]. In this study exposure to JG-03-14 reduced the production of pro-inflammatory molecules by macrophages activated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Treatment with the pyrrole-based compound decreased the concentration of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and nitric oxide (NO) released from the macrophages. Exposure to JG-03-14 also decreased TNF-α mRNA expression levels and the protein expression levels of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), the enzyme responsible for NO production in the activated macrophages. Furthermore, JG-03-14 treatment significantly changed the degradation profile of IκB-β, an inhibitor of the NF-κB transcription factor, which suggests that JG-03–14 may attenuate the activation of the LPS-induced NF-κB signaling pathway needed to produce the pro-inflammatory mediators. We conclude that JG-03-14 possesses anti-inflammatory properties

Treatment of Alaska-produced food products by ionizing radiation may
benefit the seafood and agricultural industries and the Alaskan consumer. A
feasibility study to evaluate the potential social and economic benefits and
risks as well as the costs of using the process in Alaska on Alaskan products is being coordinated
by the Institute of Northern Engineering. A research and development project to determine
effects on the quality o f Alaskan products could be the next phase in the introduction o f a new

A nano-indentation study of the contact resistance and resistivity of a bi-layered Au/multi-walled carbon nanotube composite
A bi-layer metal-carbon nanotube composite has been developed as a potential low-force electrical contact surface, for application in micro-electromechanical systems switching devices. The samples consist of a vertically aligned forest of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT), sputter coated with a layer of Au. The effect of varying the components and composition are investigated by means of a modified nano-indenter. By measuring the contact resistance of the composites under various loading conditions, the electrical properties and performance can be evaluated. The composites are shown to have homogenous properties, with each of the layers influencing the total electrical characteristics of the samples. The internal structure of the sample, the MWCNT height and penetration of gold into the forest is shown to directly influence the performance and characteristics of the samples. By analyzing the samples as bulk, the effective resistivities of the composites are also determined to have values from 303 n? m down to 54 n? m, depending on the composition of the sample
