Look Who\u27s Talking: A Multi-Case Study of In-service English Language Arts Teachers\u27 Conceptions and Uses of Discussion in the Secondary Classroom
Educational scholars and practitioners recognize that classroom discussion offers great promise for helping students develop content knowledge, critical thinking skills, and a variety of meta-cognitive and process skills associated with learning content knowledge and disciplinary processes. Despite this research-based and anecdotal consensus regarding the value of discussion, an equally extensive body of research shows that discussion is not used in U.S. classrooms as consistently or effectively as it might be. This study sought to examine this issue by exploring the relationship between in-service English language arts teachers\u27 beliefs about discussion, their goals for the use of discussion, and their actual use of discussion in the secondary English language arts classroom. The present qualitative multi-case study examined how three experienced English language arts teachers in a large southeastern school district defined and used discussion. Findings suggest that English language arts teachers recognize the value of discussion, associating it with a variety of pedagogical outcomes; however, they use it with varying degrees of effectiveness. This study has potential to make a substantial contribution to both the fields of teacher education and English education by providing scholars in both fields with a better understanding of how teachers conceptualize discussion as a pedagogical approach and the extent to which they can connect the practice with theories of literacy education

Highly efficient Localisation utilising Weightless neural systems
Efficient localisation is a highly desirable property for an autonomous navigation system. Weightless neural networks offer a real-time approach to robotics applications by reducing hardware and software requirements for pattern recognition techniques. Such networks offer the potential for objects, structures, routes and locations to be easily identified and maps constructed from fused limited sensor data as information becomes available. We show that in the absence of concise and complex information, localisation can be obtained using simple algorithms from data with inherent uncertainties using a combination of Genetic Algorithm techniques applied to a Weightless Neural Architecture
Performance of Foundations and Retaining Structures
The design, construction, and performance of several building foundations and temporary earth retaining structures located in the downtown area of White Plains, New York are presented in this paper. High rise structures were supported on shallow mat or spread foundations bearing on erratic saturated alluvial silt and sand deposits. Additionally, the construction of two and three level underground parking structures required the use of cantilevered and braced excavation support systems to retain the adjacent streets and utilities. Several assumptions were required to design and predict the performance of the building foundations and retaining structures. The accuracy of these assumptions was verified through the use of precise field measurements during and after construction. The results of these field measurements and comparison with predicted values are presented and discussed

The discriminative stimulus properties of fenfluramine: evidence for serotonergic involvement/
The first drug to be found useful in suppressing appetite was amphetamine (Lesser and Meyerson, 1938). Amphetamine has potent central stimulant, cardiovascular, hyperthermic and anorectic properties, to all of which tolerance develops upon repeated use. The need for a more selective anorectic drug without the dangers of abuse and toxicity prompted numerous studies into the anorectic activity of a number of related compounds, all based upon the phenethylamine molecule. This led to the development of fenfluramine l-(3-trifluoromethylphenyl)-2-ethylaminopropane (Alphin et al., 1964). Fenfluramine provided the appetite suppression characteristic of amphetamine without producing the central stimulation
