Schools need to think seriously about why they are doing what they are doing
PAndAS in the mist: The stellar and gaseous mass within the halos of M31 and M33
Large scale surveys of the prominent members of the Local Group have provided
compelling evidence for the hierarchical formation of massive galaxies,
revealing a wealth of substructure that is thought to be the debris from
ancient and on-going accretion events. In this paper, we compare two extant
surveys of the M31-M33 subgroup of galaxies; the Pan-Andromeda Archaeological
Survey (PAndAS) of the stellar structure, and a combination of observations of
the HI gaseous content, detected at 21cm. Our key finding is a marked lack of
spatial correlation between these two components on all scales, with only a few
potential overlaps between stars and gas.The paucity of spatial correlation
significantly restricts the analysis of kinematic correlations, although there
does appear to the HI kinematically associated with the Giant Stellar Stream
where it passes the disk of M31. These results demonstrate that that different
processes must significantly influence the dynamical evolution of the stellar
and HI components of substructures, such as ram pressure driving gas away from
a purely gravitational path. Detailed modelling of the offset between the
stellar and gaseous substructure will provide a determination of the properties

PAndAS' cubs: discovery of two new dwarf galaxies in the surroundings of the Andromeda and Triangulum galaxies
We present the discovery of two new dwarf galaxies, Andromeda XXI and
Andromeda XXII, located in the surroundings of the Andromeda and Triangulum
galaxies (M31 and M33). These discoveries stem from the first year data of the
Pan-Andromeda Archaeological Survey (PAndAS), a photometric survey of the
M31/M33 group conducted with the Megaprime/MegaCam wide-field camera mounted on
the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. Both satellites appear as spatial
overdensities of stars which, when plotted in a color-magnitude diagram, follow
metal-poor, [Fe/H]=-1.8, red giant branches at the distance of M31/M33.
Andromeda XXI is a moderately bright dwarf galaxy (M_V=-9.9+/-0.6), albeit with
low surface brightness, emphasizing again that many relatively luminous M31
satellites still remain to be discovered. It is also a large satellite, with a
half-light radius close to 1 kpc, making it the fourth largest Local Group
dwarf spheroidal galaxy after the recently discovered Andromeda XIX, Andromeda
II and Sagittarius around the Milky Way, and supports the trend that M31
satellites are larger than their Milky Way counterparts. Andromeda XXII is much
fainter (M_V=-6.5+/-0.8) and lies a lot closer in projection to M33 than it
does to M31 (42 vs. 224 kpc), suggesting that it could be the first Triangulum
satellite to be discovered. Although this is a very exciting possibility in the
context of a past interaction of M33 with M31 and the fate of its satellite
system, a confirmation will have to await a good distance estimate to confirm
its physical proximity to M33. Along with the dwarf galaxies found in previous
surveys of the M31 surroundings, these two new satellites bring the number of

Large-scale shock-ionized and photo-ionized gas in M83: the impact of star formation
We investigate the ionization structure of the nebular gas in M83 using the
line diagnostic diagram, [O III](5007 \degA)/H{\beta} vs. [S II](6716 \deg
A+6731 \deg A)/H{\alpha} with the newly available narrowband images from the
Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). We produce the
diagnostic diagram on a pixel-by-pixel (0.2" x 0.2") basis and compare it with
several photo- and shock-ionization models. For the photo-ionized gas, we
observe a gradual increase of the log([O III]/H{\beta}) ratios from the center
to the spiral arm, consistent with the metallicity gradient, as the H II
regions go from super solar abundance to roughly solar abundance from the
center out. Using the diagnostic diagram, we separate the photo-ionized from
the shock-ionized component of the gas. We find that the shock-ionized
H{\alpha} emission ranges from ~2% to about 15-33% of the total, depending on
the separation criteria used. An interesting feature in the diagnostic diagram
is an horizontal distribution around log([O III]/H{\beta}) ~ 0. This feature is
well fit by a shock-ionization model with 2.0 Z\odot metallicity and shock
velocities in the range of 250 km/s to 350 km/s. A low velocity shock
component, < 200 km/s, is also detected, and is spatially located at the
boundary between the outer ring and the spiral arm. The low velocity shock
component can be due to : 1) supernova remnants located nearby, 2) dynamical
interaction between the outer ring and the spiral arm, 3) abnormal line ratios
from extreme local dust extinction. The current data do not enable us to
distinguish among those three possible interpretations. Our main conclusion is
that, even at the HST resolution, the shocked gas represents a small fraction
of the total ionized gas emission at less than 33% of the total. However, it
accounts for virtually all of the mechanical energy produced by the central

Endothelin-1 Predicts Hemodynamically Assessed Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension in HIV Infection.
BackgroundHIV infection is an independent risk factor for PAH, but the underlying pathogenesis remains unclear. ET-1 is a robust vasoconstrictor and key mediator of pulmonary vascular homeostasis. Higher levels of ET-1 predict disease severity and mortality in other forms of PAH, and endothelin receptor antagonists are central to treatment, including in HIV-associated PAH. The direct relationship between ET-1 and PAH in HIV-infected individuals is not well described.MethodsWe measured ET-1 and estimated pulmonary artery systolic pressure (PASP) with transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) in 106 HIV-infected individuals. Participants with a PASP ≥ 30 mmHg (n = 65) underwent right heart catheterization (RHC) to definitively diagnose PAH. We conducted multivariable analysis to identify factors associated with PAH.ResultsAmong 106 HIV-infected participants, 80% were male, the median age was 52 years and 77% were on antiretroviral therapy. ET-1 was significantly associated with higher values of PASP [14% per 0.1 pg/mL increase in ET-1, p = 0.05] and PASP ≥ 30 mmHg [PR (prevalence ratio) = 1.24, p = 0.012] on TTE after multivariable adjustment for PAH risk factors. Similarly, among the 65 individuals who underwent RHC, ET-1 was significantly associated with higher values of mean pulmonary artery pressure and PAH (34%, p = 0.003 and PR = 2.43, p = 0.032, respectively) in the multivariable analyses.ConclusionsHigher levels of ET-1 are independently associated with HIV-associated PAH as hemodynamically assessed by RHC. Our findings suggest that excessive ET-1 production in the setting of HIV infection impairs pulmonary endothelial function and contributes to the development of PAH
The remnants of galaxy formation from a panoramic survey of the region around M31
In hierarchical cosmological models, galaxies grow in mass through the
continual accretion of smaller ones. The tidal disruption of these systems is
expected to result in loosely bound stars surrounding the galaxy, at distances
that reach times the radius of the central disk. The number,
luminosity and morphology of the relics of this process provide significant
clues to galaxy formation history, but obtaining a comprehensive survey of
these components is difficult because of their intrinsic faintness and vast
extent. Here we report a panoramic survey of the Andromeda galaxy (M31). We
detect stars and coherent structures that are almost certainly remnants of
dwarf galaxies destroyed by the tidal field of M31. An improved census of their
surviving counterparts implies that three-quarters of M31's satellites brighter
than await discovery. The brightest companion, Triangulum (M33), is
surrounded by a stellar structure that provides persuasive evidence for a
recent encounter with M31. This panorama of galaxy structure directly confirms
the basic tenets of the hierarchical galaxy formation model and reveals the
shared history of M31 and M33 in the unceasing build-up of galaxies.Comment: Published in Nature. Supplementary movie available at

Screening for Type 1 Diabetes in the General Population:A Status Report and Perspective
Most screening programs to identify individuals at risk for type 1 diabetes have targeted relatives of people living with the disease to improve yield and feasibility. However, ∼90% of those who develop type 1 diabetes do not have a family history. Recent successes in disease-modifying therapies to impact the course of early-stage disease have ignited the consideration of the need for and feasibility of population screening to identify those at increased risk. Existing population screening programs rely on genetic or autoantibody screening, and these have yielded significant information about disease progression and approaches for timing for screening in clinical practice. At the March 2021 Type 1 Diabetes TrialNet Steering Committee meeting, a session was held in which ongoing efforts for screening in the general population were discussed. This report reviews the background of these efforts and the details of those programs. Additionally, we present hurdles that need to be addressed for successful implementation of population screening and provide initial recommendations for individuals with positive screens so that standardized guidelines for monitoring and follow-up can be established
