Development of the Weberian Apparatus of a Catostomid Fish
The apparatus in the adult Pantosteus plebius Baird and Girard, the Rio Grande mountain sucker, is complex, particularly so in the modification of the anterior vertebrae. The Weberian ossicles are derived from components of the anterior three vertebrae and from independent connective tissue ossifications. Development is rapid, with the rudiments appearing when the fish are approximately 9 mm. long, and the ossicles reach their mature shape at about the 12 mm. stage
A comparison of 4 predictive models of calving assistance and difficulty in dairy heifers and cows
peer-reviewedThe aim of this study was to build and compare predictive models of calving difficulty in dairy heifers and cows for the purpose of decision support and simulation modeling. Models to predict 3 levels of calving difficulty (unassisted, slight assistance, and considerable or veterinary assistance) were created using 4 machine learning techniques: multinomial regression, decision trees, random forests, and neural networks. The data used were sourced from 2,076 calving records in 10 Irish dairy herds. In total, 19.9 and 5.9% of calving events required slight assistance and considerable or veterinary assistance, respectively. Variables related to parity, genetics, BCS, breed, previous calving, and reproductive events and the calf were included in the analysis. Based on a stepwise regression modeling process, the variables included in the models were the dam's direct and maternal calving difficulty predicted transmitting abilities (PTA), BCS at calving, parity; calving assistance or difficulty at the previous calving; proportion of Holstein breed; sire breed; sire direct calving difficulty PTA; twinning; and 2-way interactions between calving BCS and previous calving difficulty and the direct calving difficulty PTA of dam and sire. The models were built using bootstrapping procedures on 70% of the data set. The held-back 30% of the data was used to evaluate the predictive performance of the models in terms of discrimination and calibration. The decision tree and random forest models omitted the effect of twinning and included only subsets of sire breeds. Only multinomial regression and neural networks explicitly included the modeled interactions. Calving BCS, calving difficulty PTA, and previous calving assistance ranked as highly important variables for all 4 models. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (ranging from 0.64 to 0.79) indicates that all of the models had good overall discriminatory power. The neural network and multinomial regression models performed best, correctly classifying 75% of calving cases and showing superior calibration, with an average error in predicted probability of 3.7 and 4.5%, respectively. The neural network and multinomial regression models developed are both suitable for use in decision-support and simulation modeling
Fourteen New Companions from the Keck & Lick Radial Velocity Survey Including Five Brown Dwarf Candidates
We present radial velocities for 14 stars on the California & Carnegie Planet
Search target list that reveal new companions. One star, HD 167665, was fit
with a definitive Keplerian orbit leading to a minimum mass for the companion
of 50.3 Mjup at a separation from its host of ~5.5 AU. Incomplete or limited
phase coverage for the remaining 13 stars prevents us from assigning to them
unique orbital parameters. Instead, we fit their radial velocities with
Keplerian orbits across a grid of fixed values for Msini and period, P, and use
the resulting reduced chi-square surface to place constraints on Msini, P, and
semimajor axis, a. This technique allowed us to restrict Msini below the brown
dwarf -- stellar mass boundary for an additional 4 companions (HD 150554, HD
8765, HD 72780, HD 74014). If the combined 5 companions are confirmed as brown
dwarfs, these results would comprise the first major catch of such objects from

Large-area submillimeter resolution CdZnTe strip detector for astronomy
We report the first performance measurements of a sub-millimeter CdZnTe strip detector developed as a prototype for space-borne astronomical instruments. Strip detector arrays can be used to provide two-dimensional position resolution with fewer electronic channels than pixellated arrays. Arrays of this type and other candidate technologies are under investigation for the position-sensitive backplane detector for a coded-aperture telescope operating in the range of 30 - 300 keV. The prototype is a 1.4 mm thick, 64 multiplied by 64 stripe CdZnTe array of 0.375 mm pitch in both dimensions, approximately one square inch of sensitive area. Pulse height spectra in both single and orthogonal stripe coincidence mode were recorded at several energies. The results are compared to slab- and pixel-geometry detector spectra. The room-temperature energy resolution is less than 10 keV (FWHM) for 122 keV photons with a peak-to-valley ratio greater than 5:1. The response to photons with energies up to 662 keV appears to be considerably improved relative to that of previously reported slab and pixel detectors. We also show that strip detectors can yield spatial and energy resolutions similar to those of pixellated arrays with the same dimensions. Electrostatic effects on the pulse heights, read-out circuit complexity, and issues related to design of space borne instruments are also discussed
Biology and population dynamics of cowcod (Sebastes levis) in the southern California Bight
Cowcod (Sebastes levis) is a large (100-cm-FL), long-lived (maximum observed age 55 yr) demersal rockfish taken in multispecies commercial and recreational fisheries off
southern and central California. It lives at 20–500 m depth: adults (>44 cm TL) inhabit rocky areas at 90–300 m and juveniles inhabit fine sand and clay at 40–100 m. Both sexes have similar growth and maturity. Both sexes recruit to the fishery before reaching full maturity. Based on age and growth data, the natural mortality rate is about M =0.055/yr, but the estimate is uncertain. Biomass, recruitment, and mortality during 1951–98 were estimated in a delay-difference model with catch data and abundance indices. The same model gave less precise estimates for 1916–50 based on catch data and assumptions about virgin biomass and recruitment such as used in stock reduction analysis. Abundance indices, based on rare event data, included a habitat-area–weighted index of recreational
catch per unit of fishing effort (CPUE index values were 0.003–0.07 fish per angler hour), a standardized
index of proportion of positive tows in CalCOFI ichthyoplankton survey data (binomial errors, 0–13% positive
tows/yr), and proportion of positive tows for juveniles in bottom trawl surveys (binomial errors, 0–30% positive tows/yr). Cowcod are overfished in the southern California Bight; biomass during the 1998 season was about 7% of the virgin level and recent catches have been near 20 metric tons (t)/yr. Projections based on recent recruitment levels indicate that biomass will decline at catch levels > 5 t/yr. Trend data indicate that recruitment will be poor in
the near future. Recreational fishing effort in deep water has increased and has become more effective for catching
cowcod. Areas with relatively high catch rates for cowcod are fewer and are farther offshore. Cowcod die after capture
and cannot be released alive. Two areas recently closed to bottom fishing will help rebuild the cowcod stock

Gut inflammation provides a respiratory electron acceptor for Salmonella.
Salmonella enterica serotype Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium) causes acute gut inflammation by using its virulence factors to invade the intestinal epithelium and survive in mucosal macrophages. The inflammatory response enhances the transmission success of S. Typhimurium by promoting its outgrowth in the gut lumen through unknown mechanisms. Here we show that reactive oxygen species generated during inflammation react with endogenous, luminal sulphur compounds (thiosulphate) to form a new respiratory electron acceptor, tetrathionate. The genes conferring the ability to use tetrathionate as an electron acceptor produce a growth advantage for S. Typhimurium over the competing microbiota in the lumen of the inflamed gut. We conclude that S. Typhimurium virulence factors induce host-driven production of a new electron acceptor that allows the pathogen to use respiration to compete with fermenting gut microbes. Thus the ability to trigger intestinal inflammation is crucial for the biology of this diarrhoeal pathogen
Development of an orthogonal-stripe CdZnTe gamma radiation imaging spectrometer
We report performance measurements of a sub-millimeter resolution CdZnTe strip detector developed as a prototype for astronomical instruments operating with good efficiency in the 30-300 keV photon energy range. The prototype is a 1.4 mm thick, 64×64 contact stripe CdZnTe array of 0.375 mm pitch in both dimensions. Pulse height spectra were recorded in orthogonal-stripe coincidence mode which demonstrate room-temperature energy resolution \u3c10 keV (FWHM) for 122 keV photons with a peak-to-valley ratio \u3e5:1. Good response is also demonstrated at higher energies using a coplanar grid readout configuration. Spatial resolution capabilities finer than the stripe pitch are demonstrated. We present the image of a 133Ba source viewed through a collimator slit produced by a 4×4 stripe detector segment. Charge signals from electron and hole collecting contacts are also discussed
Exoplanet Catalogues
One of the most exciting developments in the field of exoplanets has been the
progression from 'stamp-collecting' to demography, from discovery to
characterisation, from exoplanets to comparative exoplanetology. There is an
exhilaration when a prediction is confirmed, a trend is observed, or a new
population appears. This transition has been driven by the rise in the sheer
number of known exoplanets, which has been rising exponentially for two decades
(Mamajek 2016). However, the careful collection, scrutiny and organisation of
these exoplanets is necessary for drawing robust, scientific conclusions that
are sensitive to the biases and caveats that have gone into their discovery.
The purpose of this chapter is to discuss and demonstrate important
considerations to keep in mind when examining or constructing a catalogue of
exoplanets. First, we introduce the value of exoplanetary catalogues. There are
a handful of large, online databases that aggregate the available exoplanet
literature and render it digestible and navigable - an ever more complex task
with the growing number and diversity of exoplanet discoveries. We compare and
contrast three of the most up-to-date general catalogues, including the data
and tools that are available. We then describe exoplanet catalogues that were
constructed to address specific science questions or exoplanet discovery space.
Although we do not attempt to list or summarise all the published lists of
exoplanets in the literature in this chapter, we explore the case study of the
NASA Kepler mission planet catalogues in some detail. Finally, we lay out some
of the best practices to adopt when constructing or utilising an exoplanet

On the road to extinction? Population declines of the endangered white abalone, Haliotis sorenseni
a b s t r a c t In 2001, the white abalone (Haliotis sorenseni) became the first marine invertebrate to be listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Low densities and recruitment failure due to Allee effects were identified as being the major threats to the species' long-term viability. Visual transect surveys conducted using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) since 2002 indicate a dramatic and continued decline in white abalone total abundance ($78% decrease) and density (33-100% decrease, depending on depth and year) between 2002 and 2010 at Tanner Bank, an area of historically high abundance (>1/m 2 ). An increase in the size distribution over this same time period suggests individuals in the white abalone population are growing larger (and aging) with little or no indication of adequate recruitment success. The vast majority (between 77% and 89%, depending on the year) of white abalone were observed alone, which suggests that the likelihood of reproductive success within this population remains very low. The continuing decline 30 years after the last major commercial harvest demonstrates that the strategy of benign neglect, or allowing the population to recover without intervention, has clearly failed. We recommend immediate proactive conservation through population enhancement by out-planting healthy, captivebred white abalone in areas where populations have reached or are approaching local extinction.
