    The work performed in support of the EPA/DOE MADS (Mesoscale Acid Deposition) Project included the development of meteorological data bases for the initialization of chemistry models, the testing and implementation of new planetary boundary layer parameterization schemes in the MASS model, the simulation of transport and precipitation for MADS case studies employing the MASS model, and the use of the TASS model in the simulation of cloud statistics and the complex transport of conservative tracers within simulated cumuloform clouds. The work performed in support of the NASA/FAA Wind Shear Program included the use of the TASS model in the simulation of the dynamical processes within convective cloud systems, the analyses of the sensitivity of microburst intensity and general characteristics as a function of the atmospheric environment within which they are formed, comparisons of TASS model microburst simulation results to observed data sets, and the generation of simulated wind shear data bases for use by the aviation meteorological community in the evaluation of flight hazards caused by microbursts

    Total solar eclipse 360-degree personal VR and planetarium dome video for educational outreach

    Multiple camera systems were flown to the stratosphere twelve times during the summer of 2017 to develop a high-resolution, semi-stabilized, 360-degree video platform for documenting the total solar eclipse above Idaho. The video clips are being processed into VR video that can be viewed on smart phones mounted inside inexpensive headsets. The user can visually follow the Moon’s shadow from Oregon through Idaho and into the Wyoming Tetons. It is also being processed for distribution on planetarium domes. Three primary camera systems were used the Garmin Virb 360, two Kodak PIXPRO SP360s, and six GoPro Sessions. Various gimbled, inertial, and active mounting systems were experimented with, each having advantages and disadvantages. For viewing the VR video, multiple inexpensive headsets were tested. The pros and cons of the different systems will be discussed and preliminary VR video will be demonstrated

    Summary of the High Ice Water Content (HIWC) RADAR Flight Campaigns

    NASA and the FAA conducted two flight campaigns to quantify onboard weather radar measurements with in-situ measurements of high concentrations of ice crystals found in deep convective storms. The ultimate goal of this research was to improve the understanding and develop onboard weather radar processing to detect regions of high ice water content ahead of an aircraft and enable tactical avoidance of the potentially hazardous conditions. Both High Ice Water Content (HIWC) RADAR campaigns utilized the NASA DC-8 Airborne Science Laboratory which was equipped with a Honeywell RDR-4000 weather radar and icing instruments to characterize the ice crystal clouds. The purpose of this paper is to summarize how these campaigns were conducted and highlight key results

    Graphene under hydrostatic pressure

    In-situ high pressure Raman spectroscopy is used to study monolayer, bilayer and few-layer graphene samples supported on silicon in a diamond anvil cell to 3.5 GPa. The results show that monolayer graphene adheres to the silicon substrate under compressive stress. A clear trend in this behaviour as a function of graphene sample thickness is observed. We also study unsupported graphene samples in a diamond anvil cell to 8 GPa, and show that the properties of graphene under compression are intrinsically similar to graphite. Our results demonstrate the differing effects of uniaxial and biaxial strain on the electronic bandstructure.Comment: Accepted in Physical Review B with minor change

    G-actions with close orbit spaces

    The classification of G-spaces by Palais is refined for the case where the orbit space satisfies certain mild topological hypotheses. It is shown that when a sequence of such orbit spaces is "close" to a limit orbit space, in some suitable sense, within a larger ambient orbit space, the G-spaces in the tail of the sequence are strongly equivalent to the limit G-space.Comment: 12 pages, 1 figure.     GAMA: towards a physical understanding of galaxy formation

    The Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) project is the latest in a tradition of large galaxy redshift surveys, and is now underway on the 3.9m Anglo-Australian Telescope at Siding Spring Observatory. GAMA is designed to map extragalactic structures on scales of 1kpc - 1Mpc in complete detail to a redshift of z~0.2, and to trace the distribution of luminous galaxies out to z~0.5. The principal science aim is to test the standard hierarchical structure formation paradigm of Cold Dark Matter (CDM) on scales of galaxy groups, pairs, discs, bulges and bars. We will measure (1) the Dark Matter Halo Mass Function (as inferred from galaxy group velocity dispersions); (2) baryonic processes, such as star formation and galaxy formation efficiency (as derived from Galaxy Stellar Mass Functions); and (3) the evolution of galaxy merger rates (via galaxy close pairs and galaxy asymmetries). Additionally, GAMA will form the central part of a new galaxy database, which aims to contain 275,000 galaxies with multi-wavelength coverage from coordinated observations with the latest international ground- and space-based facilities: GALEX, VST, VISTA, WISE, HERSCHEL, GMRT and ASKAP. Together, these data will provide increased depth (over 2 magnitudes), doubled spatial resolution (0.7"), and significantly extended wavelength coverage (UV through Far-IR to radio) over the main SDSS spectroscopic survey for five regions, each of around 50 deg^2. If the sequence of actions is equicontinuous and converges in the equivariant Gromov--Hausdorff topology, then the limit space is equivariantly homeomorphic to spaces in the tail of the sequence. As a consequence, the class of Riemannian orbifolds of dimension nn defined by a lower bound on the sectional curvature and the volume and an upper bound on the diameter has only finitely many members up to orbifold homeomorphism.
