Major management factors associated with the variation in reproductive performance of Irish dairy herds
End of project reportThe results highlight the importance of BCS in achieving good reproductive performance. The likelihood of reproductive success was best predicted by BCS around the time of breeding and, for cows calving in good BCS (3.0 or greater) the level of BCS loss between calving and first service. A low BCS pre-calving (3.5) results in excessive BCS loss (>0.5) post-calving. On the basis of these findings a pre-calving BCS of no greater than 3.25 is a sensible target for pasture-based spring calving systems in Ireland. It is necessary to maintain BCS at 2.75 or greater during the breeding season, and loss of body condition between calving and first service should be restricted to 0.5 BCS units.National Development Plan (NDP
Polemon, grosse Schatten of the Old Academy
"Two larger questions seem to me to arise as background to any inquiry into the nature of Polemonâs place in the Platonic tradition. The first is what it means to be a Platonist at all; and the second is the extent to which the

Stoicism of Zeno of Kition and his successors can reasonably be viewed â in the way that it was viewed by Antiochus of Ascalon, for example -- as a sort of âcorrectionâ, or âtidying-upâ, of the teachings of Polemon" from the speec
In contrast with the generality of Neoplatonist commentaries on Aristotle, that of Syrianus on Books M and N of the Metaphysics exhibits a distinctly polemical tone. This is perhaps a natural reaction to the strongly anti-Platonist subject matter of these books, but it was after all the choice of Syrianus to comment upon them. In doing so, he employs various devices of rhetorical polemic, in which he shows considerable proficiency. His first strategy is to attack Aristotle from higher ground, simply expounding to him, and to us, the correct Platonist doctrine. Elsewhere, though, he goes toe-to-toe with him, swapping sarcasm for sarcasm. There are, however, other occasions also when he seeks to confute Aristotle from his own mouth, quoting Aristotle against Aristotle. I select examples of all three procedures in turn, as they each possess their own interest. I conclude, however, that all this does not necessarily imply that Syrianus excludes himself from the Neoplatonic consensus that Plato and Aristotle are basically compatible
The effect of low volume sprint interval training in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
Objectives: Exercise is an important part of disease management in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), but adherence to current exercise recommendations is poor. Novel low-volume sprint interval training (SIT) protocols with total training time commitments of â€30 min per week have been shown to improve cardiometabolic risk and functional capacity in healthy sedentary participants, but the efficacy of such protocols in the management of NAFLD remains unknown. The aim of the present study was to examine whether a low-volume SIT protocol can be used to improve liver function, insulin resistance, body composition, physical fitness, cognitive function and general well-being in patients with NAFLD.Methods: In the present study, 7 men and 2 women with NAFLD (age: 45±8 y, BMI: 28.7±4.1 kg·mâ2) completed a 6-week control period followed by 6 weeks of twice-weekly SIT sessions (5-10Ă6-s âall-outâ cycle sprints). Body composition, blood pressure, liver function, metabolic function, functional capacity, cognitive function and quality of life were assessed at baseline, following the control period, and following the SIT intervention. Results: Walking speed during the walk test (+12%), estimated VÌO2max (+8%), verbal fluency (+44%), and blood platelet count (+12%; all p<0.05) significantly increased during the control period. These measures remained significantly raised compared to baseline following the SIT intervention, but did not significantly change any further compared to the post-control time-point. Diastolic blood pressure decreased from 87±10 to 77±8 mm Hg from the end of the control period to the end of the SIT intervention (p<0.05).Conclusion: This study does not support the use of 6 weeks of a low volume SIT protocol involving twice-weekly sessions with 5-10Ă6-s âall-outâ cycle sprints as an intervention for NAFLD disease management
Major League Baseball Team Bankruptcies: Who Wins? Who Loses?
Baseball is Americaâs sport. It evokes a sense of tradition and a love for the home team. Like all professional sports teams, however, baseball teams are part of a league, which restricts team ownership through contractual âconstitutionalâ provisions and agreements and limits the number of teams that exist. In this limited and restricted entertainment market, professional sports teams operate highly lucrative businesses that sometimes seek bankruptcy protection through Chapter 11 reorganization. Bankruptcy generally allows the debtor to alter existing contractual rights and restructure its operations to avert the financial crisis that precipitated the bankruptcy filing. However, professional sports leagues have pre-existing contractual rights and remedies in place for the benefit and protection of all of their member teams that may conflict with bankruptcy laws, and the leagues try to enforce those rights, even in the bankruptcy arena. The leagueâs existing contractual rights may conflict with bankruptcy laws that afford the debtor team to free itself from such obligations. This Comment discusses the extent to which professional sports teams can make material business decisions affecting their Chapter 11 re-organization without complying with the leagueâs constitution and associated agreements. These conflicts are at the forefront of all professional sports team bankruptcies. The Dodgers bankruptcy provides a classic example of the clash between a debtor teamâs rights in bankruptcy and MLBâs existing âconstitutionalâ rights
