Metallurgy of armour exhibited at the Palace Armoury, Valletta, Malta

The metallurgy of ten armour pieces from the Palace Armoury Collection in Malta was examined. Results showed that out of ten artefacts examined, six were produced in low carbon steel, one from a high carbon steel and three were made from wrought iron. One of the wrought iron armour pieces was fabricated from a phosphoric iron, an unusual material for these artefacts. All the steel artefacts exhibited a ferrite-pearlite microstructure. In their manufacture, no attempts had been made at producing martensite by full or slack quenching. All metal fragments contained slag inclusions. The elongated nature of the latter suggested that these artefacts were forged into shape.peer-reviewe

Truth in Folksong: Some Developments and Applications

Does an overdraft facility influence the customer costs of using a personal current account?

    Get PDF
This study examines whether personal current accounts offering an overdraft facility cost customers less to use than accounts not offering this service. This analysis uses a UK data set of 222 personal current accounts, recorded monthly between 1995 and 2011, in combination with interest rates from 1200 instant-access deposit accounts offered contemporaneously by the same firms. Our results indicate personal current accounts offering overdraft facilities have higher deposit and payment service costs than accounts not offering this service. The finding is robust to varying service attributes. This result is inconsistent with suggestions that overdraft users have been cross-subsidising other personal current account users as widely reported in theoretical and policy literatures. It is concluded that implicit and inertia costs of personal current account use may be more influential than previously reported in the pricing of these accounts

Analysis of a PWM Resonant Buck Chopper for Use as a Ship Service Converter Module

The Navy's interest in implementing a DC Zonal Electric Distribution System (DC ZEDS) in the next generation of surface combatant has motivated considerable research work into dc-dc converters. The switching frequency of a hard-switched dc-dc converter is limited by the maximum admissible switching losses allowed by the switch, heat sink, and cooling process. Also, hard- switched converters contribute significant Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) concerns for the system. This study provides a background analysis into resonant converters which utilize zero-voltage-switching and zero-current-switching techniques to mitigate the aforementioned concerns and facilitate high-bandwidth control loops. In particular, one candidate circuit is identified which can be readily realized using existing hardware and a straightforward control. The report documents the modes of operation of the circuit, sets forth the governing differential equation and mode-transition conditions, examines an ACSL simulation representation of the circuit, formulates design criteria for component selection, identifies key fabrication nuances, and documents a PSpice simulation of the circuit. Both simulation models are used to explain the operating modes of the circuit, provide insight into parameter selection, and ultimately to design the proper control of the circuit.Prepared for: Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Annapolis Det.N00167-98-WR-80279Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited
