    A Hybrid Micromachined High -Q Cavity Resonator at 5.8 GHz

    A novel hybrid micromachined resonator with high quality factor and small size at 5.8GHz is presented. The design of the resonator is based on a micromachined cavity filled with a high dielectric constant material. Energy is coupled into the cavity from input and output microstrip lines via slots. It is shown experimentally that the limiting factor in achieving a higher Q with the given dielectric materials is the dielectric loss. This resonator provides a low cost, minimum size and compact solution for the fabrication of planar, narrow-band filters and diplexers in modern wireless communication systems.

    A study of the physical properties of polymer monolayers spread at the air-water interface

    An account is given of the methods of anionic polymerisation and characterisation used to prepare polymer samples, and the experimental methods used to examine their interfacial properties, when spread as so-called Langmuir monolayers on water. Specifically, these, are surface pressure - concentration isotherm studies, neutron reflectometry, ellipsometry of polarised light, and surface quasi-elastic light scattering. Hydrogenous and deuterated analogues of three different groups of polymers have been synthesised. These are ;syndio, iso and atactic poly (methyl methaciylate) SYNDIO-, ISO-, and ATAPMMA; poly (ethylene oxide), PEO;0.85:0.15 diblock copolymers of poly(methyl methacrylate) with poly (4-vinyl pyridine), PMMA4VP.The latter materials have been quaternised with hydrogenous and deuterated ethyl bromide to create partially poly-electrolyte materials, PMMA4VPQ. Thermodynamic information obtained from surface pressure data regarding the interaction between polymer segments and the subphase in each case is related to structural and compositional changes in the film measured as a function of surface concentration by neutron reflectometry. The trends described are supported by ellipsometric data, and preliminary experiments into the investigation of PMMA surface monolayer visco-elastic properties are described

    The survival of witchcraft prosecutions and witch belief in South West Scotland

    During the era of the Scottish witch-hunts, Dumfries and Galloway was one of the last regions to initiate witch prosecutions, but it was also one of the most reluctant to completely surrender all belief in witches until a comparatively late date. In the late seventeeth and early eighteenth centuries south-west Scotland, better known for the persecution of covenanters, took the practice of witchcraft and charming very seriously indeed, and for perhaps longer than other parts of Scotland, though the area has received surprisingly little scholarly investigation. The trial evidence is not incompatible with that found elsewhere though there is less demonic content. Accusations of witchcraft in this region were mostly concerned with the troubles of everyday life, agricultural problems, family tensions and disagreements between neighbours. From 1670 to about 1740, the very decades that were giving birth to the Scottish Enlightenment, learned interest in the supernatural was actually on the increase and the topic received an unprecedented level of questioning, investigation, and scrutiny. Ironically, the ‘superstitions’ that both church and state had been attempting to eradicate for some two hundred years were now being used to defend religion against the growing threat of atheism. The zeal of the ministers does seem to have contributed to the endurance of witch beliefs in the South West, as elsewhere. Against this backdrop, the survival of witch belief and the continued prosecution of witches in southwest Scotland is examined, thus contributing to our understanding of the individualistic nature of witch persecution and the various dynamics at play within the Scottish witch-hunting experience

    Recoupling the singlet- and triplet-pairing channels in single-reference coupled cluster theory

    It is well known that single-reference coupled cluster theory truncated to low orders of excitations gives the right answer for the right reason when systems are dominated by dynamical or weak correlation. Static or strong correlation is more problematic, causing often catastrophic breakdown of restricted coupled cluster. This failure can be remedied, e.g., by allowing symmetry breaking in the reference or taking a multi-reference approach, but poses an interesting theoretical problem, especially since many groups have found that simplifying the T2 operator or the doubles amplitude equations gives better results. In singlet-paired coupled cluster, eliminating the triplet-pairing channel recovers reasonable qualitative behavior for strong correlation at the cost of a decreased description of dynamical correlation in weakly correlated situations. This behavior seems to hold for both closed- and open-shell systems. In this work, we explore the coupling of the singlet- and triplet-pairing channels of T2 and attempt to recouple them in order to recover dynamical correlation without reintroducing catastrophic failure due to strong correlation. In the weakly correlated regime, these pairing channels are only weakly coupled, and a simple recoupling gives good results. However, as strong correlation dominates, the coupling strength between the singlet- and triplet-pairing channels increases, making it difficult to perturbatively recouple the singlet- and triplet-pairing channels in this regime

    The purification of starting materials which were used in the growth of Zn(x)Cd(1-x)Se (x = 0.2) single crystals using the traveling solution method (TSM) is reported. Up to 13 cm long single crystals and as grown resistivities of 6 x 10(exp 12) ohm/cm could be achieved. Infrared and Raman spectra of Zn(0.2)Cd(0.8)Se are also presented and discussed

By integrating participation in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program with the teaching of concepts in the classroom at Utah Valley State College, faculty have been able to increase the retention of knowledge and the development of practical skills that benefit students, potential employers, and the community

    Providing Support for an Interdisciplinary Research Group with a Multidisciplinary Informationist Team: Is It Effective?

    Background Three subject librarians and a data librarian, representing three departments and two libraries at a university, were awarded an NLM Informationist Supplement to support an interdisciplinary Research Group with an NIH grant. The Informationist Team developed a model to utilize the skills of multiple librarians to support the increasing number of interdisciplinary and interprofessional research groups at the university. Librarians routinely attended lab meetings and shared notes with each other to monitor researcher needs. Methods The Informationist Team regularly provided support for literature searches, creating search alerts, bibliographic citation management and sharing, and data management to an interdisciplinary Research Group over a two year period. Two new library workshops were also developed after observing researcher needs. Surveys were administered to the Research Group prior to, during, and after a two-year period to assess the effectiveness of an Informationist Team model that employs the skills of multiple librarians. Results Surveys administered to the Research Group showed that the group increased their use of appropriate resources to find scientific and technical information over a two-year period. Additionally, by the final survey, all members of the Research Group had worked with a librarian and all felt it had saved them time. The data librarian also facilitated the creation of a form to collect data for a lab protocol that helped the group avoid significant errors. Conclusions The relationship between the multidisciplinary Informationist Team and the Research Group was mutually beneficial. The Research Group was able to improve its knowledge and efficiency with the Informationist Team’s assistance, and regular librarian attendance at lab meetings enabled librarians to enhance their understanding of basic science research. Having a multidisciplinary team of librarians allowed for sharing the workload and for deeper assistance to the Research Group in specialized areas such as data management

    The Framework Programmable Software Development Platform (FPP) is a project aimed at combining effective tool and data integration mechanisms with a model of the software development process in an intelligent integrated software environment. Guided by the model, this system development framework will take advantage of an integrated operating environment to automate effectively the management of the software development process so that costly mistakes during the development phase can be eliminated. The focus here is on the design of components that make up the FPP. These components serve as supporting systems for the Integration Mechanism and the Framework Processor and provide the 'glue' that ties the FPP together. Also discussed are the components that allow the platform to operate in a distributed, heterogeneous environment and to manage the development and evolution of software system artifacts
